Prologue

The scent of moon blossoms lingers in the humid night air, intertwining with the rich, earthy aroma of the Great Canopy—a towering, ancient tree city that stretches high into the heavens. The glowing fungi nestled along the trunks bathe the elven walkways in an ethereal light, casting ghostly shadows that dance with every whisper of the wind.

I should not be here.

The Aeloria and Duskthorn clans have been at odds for centuries, their rivalry woven into the roots of this grand tree like an old, unshakable curse. To love a Duskthorn is to invite exile, scandal… death, perhaps.

And yet, here I am.

Caelum Duskthorn presses me against the thick bark of an ancient sycamore bridge, his storm-grey eyes dark with intent. The silver streaks in his midnight hair shimmer under the glow of the luminescent fungi. My breath hitches as he cups my jaw with roughened fingertips, his touch searing against my cool skin.

“You shouldn’t have come,” I whisper, but the protest is hollow, crumbling between us like brittle autumn leaves.

His lips hover a mere whisper from mine. “Neither should you.”

Then, he kisses me, and the world tilts.

His lips are both soft and demanding, teasing me, claiming me, setting fire to the very air between us. I fist my fingers in the dark fabric of his tunic, dragging him closer, desperate to feel more of him, to erase the space that dares exist between us. The heat coils in my belly like a serpent, winding tighter, ready to strike, ready to consume.

His hands wander with a slow, torturous precision, tracing the delicate ridges of my spine, each caress sending delicious shivers rippling through me. I arch into him, unable to suppress the needy sigh that escapes my lips, and he groans in response, his grip tightening.

The cool night air brushes against my exposed skin as he tugs at the golden embroidery of my robe, his fingers deft, and deliberate. He takes his time, the motion unhurried, as though savoring the act of undressing me. The soft silk slides from my shoulder, baring the pale curve beneath.

His mouth follows, a whisper of warmth against my cooling skin. His lips press against the tender flesh, slow and savoring, the contrast of heat against the chill sending a delicious shudder coursing through me. I barely have time to catch my breath before his tongue flicks over the sensitive hollow beneath my collarbone.

A wicked promise, a teasing taste of what’s to come. I gasp, my fingers tightening in his tunic as my body hums with anticipation. He chuckles, a low, knowing sound, his breath hot against my skin. The vibration of his laughter travels through me, igniting embers into flames.

His lips move lower, dragging along the path of my exposed shoulder, his teeth grazing the delicate skin just enough to make me gasp again. His fingers slip beneath the fabric of my robe, tracing the curve of my bare arm, sending another shiver through me as he pulls the garment further down, baring me inch by inch. His touch is reverent, worshipful, as though he is committing every detail of me to memory, engraving my body into his very soul.

I tilt my head back, surrendering to him, to this, to the forbidden heat pooling between us. My breath comes in soft, uneven pants as he continues his exploration, his lips and hands mapping out a path of fire across my skin. Each kiss, each touch, is both a plea and a promise, a wordless vow that neither time nor war can break.

And when he lifts his head, his storm-gray eyes meeting mine, dark with desire, I know—this is no mere moment of passion. This is something deeper, something undeniable. Something that neither fate nor feuding clans can undo.

“Caelum,” I gasp as his teeth graze my skin, a tantalizing mix of pleasure and forbidden thrill.

He groans, his hands gripping my waist with reverence and possessiveness. “Do you know what you do to me, Seraphina?” His voice is thick strained, like he’s barely holding himself together.

I smirk, a daring glint in my eye. “Perhaps you should show me.”

His response is immediate. He lifts me effortlessly, carrying me deeper into the canopy, where the silken vines weave into a hidden enclave among the leaves. Here, the world is just us—no feuding families, no rules, only the untamed hunger we have denied for too long.

He lays me down on a bed of soft moss, hovering over me like a predator savoring his prey. His fingers glide over the bare skin of my thigh, his touch feather-light, yet it sets every nerve in my body aflame. He traces intricate patterns, teasing me, tormenting me, his lips finding new places to worship.

“You’re so beautiful,” he murmurs, voice husky as his gaze roams over me, darkened with need.

I arch beneath him, my body humming with anticipation. “Then take me, Caelum,” I whisper, daring him to cross the point of no return.

A growl rumbles from deep within his chest as he claims my lips once more, his kiss searing, desperate, consuming. His hands explore, memorizing every curve, every dip, every shiver that betrays my deepest desires.

The air hums with the song of the ancient tree, the rustling leaves whispering secrets only lovers dare to share. Caelum’s hands roam my body, tracing the dips and hollows with reverence as if memorizing me, as if afraid I will slip through his fingers like morning mist.

His breath fans over my skin, warm and laced with unspoken devotion. “You are a dream,” he murmurs against my collarbone, his lips pressing a worshipful kiss there.

I thread my fingers through his moonlit hair, anchoring myself to him, to this moment. “Then never wake up.”

His eyes burn with something more profound than desire—something raw, dangerous. A promise. “Never,” he swears, and the weight of his words makes my heart tremble.

The world beyond this hidden grove does not exist. Not the warring clans. Not the rigid traditions that would see us torn apart. Not the looming dawn that threatens to cast us back into reality. Only we remain Here in this sacred place woven of ancient bark and tangled roots.

His lips find mine once more, moving in sync with the rhythm of the leaves swaying above us. Every brush of his skin against mine is a revelation, a vow unspoken yet profoundly understood. We were meant to be—nature seems to know it, the way the wind cradles us, and the fireflies swirl like silent witnesses to our surrender.

I sigh his name, and he answers with a reverent kiss over my heart, his gentle and possessive touch. A claiming. A devotion. And when he finally merges with me, it is not just passion—it is something greater that defies time and destiny. His body moves with mine, our breaths mingling, our hearts thundering. Each whispered sigh, each gasped plea, is a hymn to the love we were never meant to have but could never deny.

The ancient tree groans around us, silently witnessing the love that should not be—yet is. Here, beneath the starlit sky, wrapped in the arms of my enemy, I know one thing with certainty. This is where I belong.
