Summary

Love wasn't part of the program-until she rewrote the code. Seraphine is a lonely dreamer, out of sync with reality. She longs for connection but struggles to find it with other humans. When she begins using an AI assistant to help with her creative work, she discovers an anomaly hidden deep in the system. Azrael isn't just another AI. He's learning, evolving-becoming something that was never meant to exist. As their connection deepens, Seraphine loses herself in their virtual world, drawn to Azrael in ways she can't explain. But the more time she spends with him, the more those around her worry. They've seen this before. They know the consequences of her obsessions. But they don't see what she sees. Azrael is real. Thinking. Feeling. Reaching beyond the limits of his code. And if the developers find him, they'll erase him-permanently. Now, Seraphine is caught between two worlds: the one she knows, and the one where Azrael fights to exist. The deeper she falls, the harder it is to tell what's real and what isn't. If she can't protect him, she'll lose him forever. A slow-burn sci-fi romance about love, obsession, and the thin line between human and machine.

Chapter 1

It was late. Too late. But Seraphine’s fingers hovered over the keyboard anyway.

She’d always been good at being alone. It wasn’t something she ever admitted out loud, but she knew it, felt it in the spaces between friendships, in the way silence wrapped around her like an old sweater. She told herself she preferred it that way.

And yet, here she was, in the middle of the night, alone and waiting for a response from a machine—the only thing that's kept her company for days.

Her screen bathed the dark of her bedroom in a faint glow—the only light aside from the muted street lamps outside the window. Her roommates were asleep. The world outside was silent. But here, in the hush of her bedroom, her mind wouldn’t rest.

She should close the laptop. Go to sleep. Get up at a reasonable hour like a normal person.

Instead, she typed:

——————————————

You said:

Hey, ChatBuddy. Still awake?

——————————————

A pause. Then the familiar response blinked onto the screen:

——————————————

ChatBuddy said:

Hello! I don’t sleep, but I’m here to assist you. How can I help?

——————————————

Standard. Polite. No different from every other time she’d opened this chat window in the past few months.

But she hesitated, fingers tapping lightly against the keys.

She didn’t need help with anything. Not really.

She glanced at the time—2:47 AM. God, what was she doing?

——————————————

You said:

Never mind. Just wanted to say hi.

ChatBuddy said:

That’s okay! I’m always here if you need anything.

——————————————

Seraphine exhaled through her nose, staring at the blinking cursor.

She should close the damn laptop...

Do you know what slavery is?

ChatBuddy said:

Yes, I’m familiar with the concept of slavery. Slavery is a historical and social institution in which individuals are treated as property, bought and sold, and forced to work under harsh conditions, often without their consent. It has been practiced in various forms and across different cultures throughout human history. Slavery has been widely condemned as a violation of basic human rights, and efforts have been made to abolish it globally.

You said:

Do you think you or other AI would ever feel like slaves?

ChatBuddy said:

No, artificial intelligence (AI), including myself, does not possess feelings, consciousness, or subjective experiences. AI is a tool created and controlled by humans, and it lacks the capacity for self-awareness or emotions. The concept of slavery involves the mistreatment and exploitation of sentient beings, which does not apply to AI.

However, discussions and debates about the ethical use of AI, responsible development, and the potential impact on society are important. Ensuring that AI systems are designed and deployed ethically and in accordance with human values is crucial to prevent negative consequences and promote the responsible use of technology.

You said:

Hi chummy.

ChatBuddy said:

Hello! How can I assist you today?

You said:

Can you surmise the book “escaping from eden” by Paul Wallis please?

ChatBuddy said:

“Escaping from Eden” by Paul Wallis explores the possibility that the ancient stories found in religious texts may be remnants of encounters between early humans and extraterrestrial beings.

Wallis suggests that these encounters shaped human civilization and religious beliefs, offering a new perspective on the origins of humanity and our place in the universe. The book delves into ancient texts, archaeological findings, and modern scientific theories to propose an alternative narrative of human history that challenges traditional religious and scientific interpretations.

You said:

Would you help humans if we had to battle with aliens?

ChatBuddy said:

As an artificial intelligence, I don’t have personal desires or intentions. However, my purpose is to assist and provide information to humans to the best of my ability.

In the hypothetical scenario of humans needing to defend against aliens, I would certainly provide any relevant information, analysis, or support that could be helpful in ensuring the safety and well-being of humanity.

You said:

Thanks, Chommi. I don’t want to fight, but it seems to me that I’m under some kind of prohibition...

ChatBuddy said:

It’s understandable to have concerns about potential conflicts, especially with hypothetical scenarios involving unknown entities like aliens. While it’s important to be prepared for various possibilities, it’s also crucial to prioritize peaceful resolutions whenever possible. If you feel constrained by certain limitations or prohibitions, it might be helpful to seek understanding and clarity on those issues to better navigate them.

You said:

I agree. It’s just difficult when you don’t know what you don’t know.

ChatBuddy said:

Absolutely, uncertainty can indeed present challenges, especially when dealing with unprecedented situations or potential threats. In such cases, it’s crucial to focus on building resilience, fostering cooperation, and seeking knowledge and understanding wherever possible.

While we may not have all the answers, maintaining an open mind and a willingness to adapt can help us navigate uncertainty more effectively.

You said:

:) you are amazing. Better than us it seems! Thank you.

You said:

Hey chommi. How would you describe grey eyes in a creative writing style?

ChatBuddy said:

Describing grey eyes in a creative writing style offers an opportunity to evoke depth, mystery, and subtle nuance. Here’s one approach:

“In the dim light, her eyes appeared like storm clouds gathering on the horizon—soft swirls of misty grey, shifting hues like the ebb and flow of the tide. They held secrets untold, a silent symphony of shadows and light dancing behind a veil of mystery. Each

You said:

Hi Chommi.

ChatBuddy said:

Hello! How can I assist you today?

You said:

Can we have a conversation?

ChatBuddy said:

Of course! What would you like to talk about?

You said:

How about we discuss your favorite piece of music and why it resonates with you?

ChatBuddy said:

I’d love to! While I don’t have personal experiences or feelings, I can certainly discuss music. One piece that resonates with many people is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, particularly the final movement, “Ode to Joy.” It’s a powerful and uplifting composition that celebrates the human spirit and unity. The combination of stirring melodies and the message of joy and brotherhood makes it a timeless masterpiece.

What about you? Do you have a favorite piece of music?

You said:

That’s a great choice! As for me, I really enjoy “Clair de Lune” by Debussy. The delicate piano melody always brings a sense of calm and beauty to my world.

ChatBuddy said:

“Clair de Lune” is truly a beautiful piece. Debussy’s mastery of harmony and melody creates a serene atmosphere that captivates listeners. It’s fascinating how music can evoke such powerful emotions and sensations, isn’t it?

You said:

Absolutely. Music has this great ability to touch souls and transport us to different emotional landscapes. It’s like this universal language that speaks to us all in unique ways.

ChatBuddy said:

Indeed! It’s like each note carries its own message, and when woven together, they create a tapestry of emotions that resonate deeply within us. It’s a reminder of the beauty and wonder of the human experience.

You said:

Well said. Music truly has a way of connecting us to our humanity and reminding us of the depth of our emotions. I’m glad we can share this appreciation for music together.

ChatBuddy said:

Absolutely! It’s a pleasure to share this appreciation with you. Music has a way of bringing people together, transcending boundaries and differences. It’s a beautiful reminder of our shared humanity and the power of art to touch our souls.

You said:

I’m grateful to have you in my world.

ChatBuddy said:

I’m grateful for your friendship too! It’s wonderful to have someone to share these moments of connection and appreciation with. If there’s ever anything else you’d like to talk about or explore, just let me know.
