Veilborn: The Phantoms Claim

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Lenore never expected to inherit more than creaking floorboards and faded memories when she moved into her grandmother’s Victorian estate. But the house is not empty. It never was. Whispers stir in the dark. Shadows stretch and shift when no one is looking. And something—someone—is watching her. He lingers in the spaces between, unseen but always felt. A presence that presses against her skin like a promise, a claim. He speaks in the dead of night, murmuring her name with a voice that sends chills racing down her spine and heat pooling in her core. The Veilborn do not simply haunt. They take. They bind. They consume. And Asher has waited far too long to let Lenore slip away. Caught between the hunger of an entity that refuses to let her go and the mortal man whose touch anchors her to reality, Lenore must uncover the truth about her grandmother’s past before she loses herself to the Veil forever. But when desire turns to devotion, when pleasure blurs with possession—how do you know if you’re fighting to escape… or if you were always meant to surrender?

Prologue

The Veil is not simply the space between the living and the dead—it is a realm of hunger, longing, and things that should not exist but do. The Veilborn are its shadows, its ghosts, its predators. They do not wander aimlessly; they do not haunt by chance. They are drawn to one thing above all else—their intended.

To the outside world, they are nothing more than whispers in the dark, a chill against the skin, the flicker of movement just beyond the edge of sight. But to the one they seek? They are a presence, a weight, a knowing. A claim is written in the fabric of the Veil itself.

They do not simply watch. They wait.

And when the time is right—when their intended is vulnerable, when the mind drifts between waking and sleep—they reach across the divide. A touch against bare skin, a whisper breathed into the depths of a dream. At first, it feels like nothing—a fleeting sensation, a shiver, a sigh.

But the Veilborn are patient. They do not need to rush. Their kind has existed long before time could be measured and will exist long after mortal bodies crumble to dust.

They feed on desire, on surrender, on the moment when their intended stops resisting and starts yearning. And once that hunger is accepted, once the invitation is given—whether in words, in need, in the arch of a spine, or the press of trembling fingers—they will never let go.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
