CHAPTER ONE

THE BEGINNING: HOW IT ALL BEGAN

"Still nothing?" Jackson Miller asked Cooper James, one of his team mates as they continued to dig through the excavation site.

They had travelled to South West Nigeria, Oyo state to be precise, after hearing about the treasures and riches buried in Orí awo, a particular region that even the residents tended to avoid, it was a place rumored to be cursed by a creature the locals called Egbere. The translator his supervisor had assigned him to communicate with the locals told him it meant 'bush baby' in English.

The translator had introduced himself as Adebayo Adewole during their first meeting, when he came to pick he and his teammates up at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. He in turn introduced himself and teammates. "I'm Jackson Miller, these are my friends and teammates, Evans Moore, Lionel May, Patrick Allen, Andrés Sebastian, Adewale George, Cooper James, Desmond Twain and Eli Johnson." Before making the four hour journey down to Oyo State.

Adebayo had told him it was a dwarf like creature in Yoruba mythology, it was said to move about in the night, holding a mat that was said to make any human who took it rich, and a lamp, and whoever was brave enough to wrestle with the so called Egbere, could take the mat but as long as he or she could endure the cries and wails of the Egbere at night for seven days, if not the person dies under mysterious circumstances and the Egbere takes its mat back.

Jackson chuckled wryly when Adebayo told him, "that's bullshit and nothing more than a fairytale to scare little children, please don't tell me you actually believe that?" He asked the dark skinned bald man.

"It's a part of my culture of course I believe it, whether we like it or not there are some truths to some of these things." He replied him.

"Still nothing?" Jackson asked for the umpteenth time that day.

"Nothing, not a single thing in sight, it's all just dirt, dirt and more dirt. Are you sure you got the area right?" Evans Moore asked annoyed. A member of the nine person team that traveled all the way from the US to Nigeria.

"Yes, it's the right area. You know what, how about we all go into town, get some drinks, see what this town as to offer and we'll come back tomorrow to continue?"

He asked his teammates, he knew they were tired, hell he was tired to, they were out in the sun all day and he was sure they needed rest if they were going to continue tomorrow. Because they had been up all morning.

"Come, I'll take you guys into town, introduce you to the local delicacies, and you might be lucky enough to get the ladies to." Adebayo smirked as he told them.

"Hell yeah, fuck are we waiting for?" Andrés, the playboy of the group asked, while loading all the equipments into the truck.

Tomorrow's a new day.
