1. Heartbreak and Mistake

MARIE

“Marie Collins, Get your ass down here right now! It’s time to party!”

I giggled to myself as I read Bella’s message out loud. She was already at the club she had booked for the occasion and had even ordered some drinks.

I rolled my eyes jokingly at the tons of messages that kept popping up on my phone as I stretched out my hand to hail a taxi. It was the best night of my life and I wanted nothing more than to have Malcolm, my boyfriend by my side through it all.

He had supported me and stood by my side even when I had to travel for six weeks for the training session for the job and now that I was back in the country, with a contract from the number one company in the entire world, I wanted to see him.

I didn’t just bag a perfect and well sought after job, I also had the best boyfriend in the entire world.

“Come on… pick up, pick up.” I whispered to myself at the back of the taxi but Malcolm simply wasn’t answering his phone.

I was already late for the party and Bella would be pissed if I missed any single thing she had taken her time to prepare and since I desperately wanted to spend the night with Malcom too because we’ve not seen each other since the last time he paid me a visit, I decided to head over to his place.

“Give me a minute, I’ll be right back.” I said to the taxi driver as soon as he pulled up in front of Malcolm’s house. I rushed out and headed to the door but just as I was about to press the doorbell, I noticed the door was slightly open.

My brows furrowed as I pushed it open slowly.

“Malcolm?” I called out his name but there was no response. It was dead silent and my heart began to race when I noticed how scattered the living room was.

Did someone break into his house?

“Malcolm?!” I cried out as I pulled out my phone and was about to dial 911 when I heard voices. It sounded like someone was giggling so with a slightly trembling body, I headed up the stairs with this dreadful feeling gradually taking a hold of me.

“Stop it Malcolm, that tickles.” A female voice filled my ears and my entire body stiffened as I came to a halt at the top of the stairs, my eyes glued on his bedroom door that was slightly open and provided a good view of his bed.

My Malcolm was naked beside a blonde woman with nothing but her panties on and he was fondling her breast.

“Just admiring how perfect your body is Chloe, I want to feel every inch of your body over and over again and never get tired of it.” He whispered softly to her and a gasp slipped from me as I stumbled a step down the stairs.

My hand flew up to cover my mouth immediately to prevent myself from making a single sound. My eyes widened in shock and my chest heaved heavily.

I was simply rooted to my spot and had no clue how I was supposed to react or what I was supposed to do.

Four good years with him, holding his hand during the rough few years he experienced after college and being grateful for how understanding he was throughout the period of my training, and this was the welcome back I got?

No! This can’t happen today! This just can’t happen today.

I turned around and rushed back out the door, fighting back the tears that stung so bad and threatened to start pouring down my face. My phone kept blowing up with notifications from Bella but I ignored everything.

This was supposed to be a perfect night.

One I was supposed to share with the man I loved! Why would Malcom do that to me?

I held on tightly to my dress at the back of the taxi as he sped down the road, every breath was painful and I was barely in control of the thoughts in my head but we soon pulled up in front of the club.

Unaware of my surroundings, I got down from the car in a trance like manner and I bumped into someone almost immediately,

“Bella! Where have you been? I’ve been sending so many messages and when you didn’t reply I got worried. The party already started and the…”

Her words trialed off when she noticed the tears that had pooled at the bottom of my eyes.

“Marie? Marie, are you okay?.”

Was I okay? No I wasn’t, but telling Bella that would ruin the entire night. She had been planning this night ever since I travelled for the company’s training and she was genuinely happy when I got the email that I had been chosen for the job; everyone was.

Did I really want to ruin everything for everyone?

They didn’t have to know, I could just suck it up and survive the night. By the time I start working tomorrow, the job would help me forget everything, it would be easier to move on and no one would have to know, I thought to myself as I stared up at Bella.

“Marie, answer me! Are you alright?”

“Of course I’m fine, I am just so happy that I got the job Bella, I am so happy that those six weeks were not a waste.” I lied straight to her face and even though she didn’t exactly buy it, she smiled at me.

We headed inside together. I could no longer fight back the tears and the pain in my chest made it so uncomfortable for me to breathe. It was spreading so fast as if someone had buried a knife in my chest and wouldn’t stop twisting it.

I didn’t want to break down in front of everyone, I just couldn’t

“You’re going to have so much fun tonight before you start your job tomorrow and of course, I know you won’t be able to take too much alcohol because of the…” Bella said as she wrapped her arms around me but I interrupted her.

“No Bella, I want the alcohol.”

“What? But you resume work tomorrow and you need to start clear headed and not hung over.”

“I know but after six weeks in that place, there is no way I am not going to get a drink as soon as I step out.”

That was partly the reason why I wanted to get drunk but the real reason was that I hoped the alcohol would help numb my pain and help me hold back the tears that were threatening to come pouring down.

“Just one shot and that’s it.” She said sternly to me as she handed over a shot of vodka to me.

“Come on Bella, loosen up! It’s been so long and I just got a job! A job with Richardson corps! If that is not worth celebrating then what is?” I shrieked excitedly, desperate to mask the pain eating at me from the inside.

Malcolm really didn’t deserve to ruin my night like this.

Bella agreed to let me drink a little and I was so eager to drown the pain that I even took to dancing and wouldn’t stop even when my legs began to hurt. I just wanted to drown the image of him with that woman from my head but I couldn’t.

No matter how hard I tried it just wouldn’t go away.

“You must be really excited Marie, you’ve drunk so much already and you’re still dancing.” Bella giggled as she emptied the bottle.

“I’ll get us another bottle, something stronger.” I said to her as I began to walk towards the bar.

“No marie you don’t have to…” Bella protested but I ignored her.

As soon as I turned my back to her, I wiped the tears at the corners of my eyes away with the back of my hand, even though I only made it worse by spreading the mascara, I was determined to not shed a single tear.

I was going to have fun, the kind I had not had in months.

I was just about to talk to the bartender when I heard a masculine voice speak up beside me.

“Can I get something stronger?”

I turned to my side and my lips parted softly when my eyes rested on him.
