She Shoots, He Scores

Melissa never thought she’d go out with her high school crush, the hockey captain.

Melissa watched Jake play hockey all year, from Triple-A to the OHL. She remained steadfast. He never abandoned her to spend time with his friends, or with other girls, or to party.

Both are crushing on each other. Melissa and Jake recognized their fortune; he aimed for the NHL, she for Naturopathic Medicine.

The parents soon grasped Melissa’s inevitable path. The constant player exchanges between teams had Jake traded to the Sioux Ste. Marie Hounds. Jake wanted Melissa billeted near his location.

“What makes you think you can advocate for Melissa to be billeted wherever you go, Jake? Do you think you’re better than other players on your team?”

“Not at all. But I cannot play without her around me. I don’t know what it is.” He smiled.

“You can try it and see for yourself. But you won’t like the outcome.”

Jake finished talking to the coaches and explaining his situation, they waved it off and said, “Fine.”

Melissa’s parents were supportive of what they were supporting and were happy about their decision. Before Melissa arrived, Jake met a few other kids they would see regularly while living in the Sioux.

None of the other kids knew about Melissa coming, and Jake didn’t mention it because he never thought about it. The mention of Melissa happened only after Mary Jane, Jake’s billeted sister, was the same age as Melissa.

The problems began with the two girls. Melissa didn’t like Mary Jane hanging around Jake, and Mary Jane lied about how much time she spent with Jake when he wasn’t at the rink.

Jake, oblivious as to why Melissa was upset, only figured it out after Melissa confided in him. Mary Jane heard what Melissa said to Jake and she smiled a smug little grin. She enjoyed getting under Melissa’s skin.

Melissa and Jake had a mature relationship and she knew that Jake would never turn his head for another. She told him they would work it out and get through it, no matter what came their way.

Mary Jane became gravely upset when she discovered tactics to break the two apart weren’t working. Closer together. Each step Mary Jane took forward to grab a piece of Jake, he pulled back from her and ran faster and harder toward Melissa.

The hockey championship being played in the Sioux marked the last season game. Melissa knew Jake was signed by the Detroit Red Wings and they would be moving home.

She went to the rink. She saw Mary Jane standing where the hockey players came from. Melissa headed over toward Mary Jane and grabbed her by her hair. The hockey players and the loud music masked the noise of her screams.

Melissa got her off the rail and said, “You bitch, you’ve tried to break us up since you knew about me.”

“That’s not true. You’re the only bitch around here. Jake’s the one who wanted a relationship with me.”

“Now I know you’re lying. My Jake would never do something like that,” Melissa shouted.

“You don’t know him as well as you thought you did.” Mary Jane smiled at her, knowing she filled her head with doubt.

Go ahead and tell us what’s on your mind. “I think he’s leaving sooner than that. He packed his bags and put them into the trunk of our car already. We’re going to leave here right after the game.”

“Good riddance to bad rubbish,” Mary Jane said.

“We’ll see about that. Tomorrow is another day,” Melissa said.

Mary Jane laughed in her face and mocked her. “How dare you mock me.” Melissa said, forming a fist and punching her in the eye.

Later, after the game, Jake was named MVP, and it was announced he would play for the Detroit Red Wings. Jake carried his bag to the car and put it into the trunk. He got into the back seat with Melissa.

“I socked her in the eye.” Melissa said.

“You didn’t. Babe, what for? I scored a hat,” Jake said.

Melissa’s dad said, “She shoots and he scores!” You two are crazy kids. writing here…
