The Dual Lives Of Christian and Chris

Christian Winter was a man of many layers, each one intricately woven with the threads of his life experiences. A gifted artist, his soul was as kind and gentle as the brushstrokes he laid upon the canvas. He'd stood over six feet tall with a muscular build, dark hair, with piercing blue eyes that mirrored the hardships he'd endured in his young twenty three years.

Having been left at a foster home at the tender age of three Christian grew up knowing he was different from the other kids, living with a secret that was most unusual, he found himself hiding from the others more regularly as he grew older. By the age of eight Christian struck out on his own, leaving the security of Ms. Gustafson's foster home behind for a life on the streets. Though not a preferable solution, it was necessary in order to protect his secret from being discovered.

The hidden secret that resided deep within his heart was his sister, Chris. Though she was seldom seen by others, Chris was ever-present in Christian’s thoughts. Her safety and happiness were his utmost priority, driving him to strive for a peaceful place for them both.

From as early as he could remember, the bond between Christian and Chris manifested in a most peculiar way. Through an enigmatic phenomenon they called “phasing”. At spontaneous and unpredictable moments Christian’s body would transform into female form. In these moments, he physically became Chris — a smaller, more petite version of himself. It was as if two souls resided within, each with its own desires and aspirations. Instinct and fleeting memories of his mother’s teachings compelled Christian to protect his secret at all costs.

Phasing was a burden and a mystery that Christian had never fully understood, yet it was an integral part of his life. When Christian became Chris, he embraced her presence, allowing her to express herself freely. They longed for a world where Chris could exist openly, without the fear of their secret being discovered. Yet, such freedom would come with a cost. They knew that if the knowledge of their phasing got out, it could be dangerous. So they kept their closely guarded secret to themselves.

The experience of being a homeless orphan on the streets had shaped them, instilling a resilience and perseverance that fueled their passion for life. By the age of thirteen young Christian found the public library and that experience changed the course of his and Chris' existence forever. The library became a sanctuary of learning and comfort. A haven which provided nourishment for his gifted brain, and with the guidance of his loyal mentor, Lauren --a librarian who worked there--young Christian had taught himself the craft of fine art with a focus uncanny for one who was so young . Christian excelled at every subject that Lauren threw at him, but his first love was always art. He dedicated countless hours to mastering the delicate nuances of fine portraiture, through sketching and chalk art and them finally oil painting.

Christian’s life had been greatly enriched by his friendship with Lauren, who was not only a positive and steadfast mentor but also a sincere and loving person who had looked out for Christian during his formative years. Her encouragement helped him reach beyond his imagination, fostering a deep familial bond between them. A daily influence in his life, Lauren's support was unwavering, and over time, she became like an older sister to him, a connection which provided Christian with a sense of belonging and inspiration to pursue his dreams.

Even though Lauren was like family and his only friend, the existence of Chris was something Christian felt he could not share with Lauren, which weighed heavily on his conscience. He felt he was being dishonest, as Lauren was unaware of this significant aspect of his life.

Talented as he was, Christian still struggled with insecurity, a remnant of his challenging childhood and adolescence. The secrecy surrounding his dual life fostered confusion and shyness, leading him to avoid close interactions with others.

During their monthly get togethers with Lauren Christian felt comfortable enough to share his dreams of finding a companion. But not knowing his unique situation, she encouraged him to explore dating. Alas, Christian knew that, because of his unique predicament, such adventures were unlikely.

Every few months Lauren would inquire about his love life. “Have you found anyone special?” Lauren would ask with a kind smile. His response was always the same: a shrug followed by “No not yet.”

Lauren recognized his unique qualities and was convinced that there was someone out there who would appreciate him for who he truly was. “Keep trying, Christian, it will happen,” she encouraged, hoping to instill a sense of hope and persistence in him.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to try, but past experiences with fleeting romantic encounters gone awry, coupled with his unpredictable phasing instilled a fear of forming deep relationships. The question of how to find his special someone eluded him. The journey seemed daunting, filled with uncertainties and the potential for heartbreak.

Now as an adult, Christian preferred living in quiet solitude in his one room apartment overlooking Central Park in Manhattan. He'd done well for himself by selling his art in nearby galleries. Although he didn't live in luxury he was comfortable here, having the privacy he needed to paint and most importantly to give Chris a safe haven and the freedom to explore their new surroundings.

To thwart his loneliness Christian found solace through his art. It was a medium to communicate his and Chris' innermost feelings. Every painting was a dialogue between the two of them, capturing the essence of their dual existence. Chris’s influence could be seen in the vibrant colors and delicate details that adorned the canvases, a reflection of her unique perspective. Through Christian's determination and skilled hand and Chris’ keen eye, they created masterpieces as a testament to their resilience and unity.

Despite the challenges they faced with phasing, Christian and Chris relied on each other to navigate the complexities of their intertwined lives. In the loneliest moments of solitude, Chris’ silent reassurance echoed in his mind, consoling him that better days were ahead and that he was not alone in his longing. But it was not enough to stave off the deep feeling of loneliness.

Keeping busy during the day helped, but a lifetime of lonely nights made Christian's heart ache for a deeper connection to someone.

When not immersed in his artwork, Christian found comfort in expressing his feelings through music. His musical style, deeply rooted in contemporary folk and pop. Armed with his trusty guitar found in a pawn shop, along with his treasured harmonica, a gift from many years ago, Christian weaved twin melodies that danced between harmony and counterpoint, creating a captivating musical narrative. He would serenade from street corners or in parks, inviting passersby to pause and immerse themselves in the serene ambiance he created. Performing music offered a temporary distraction from his woes.

Despite the heaviness in his heart, Christian clung to a glimmer of hope. Maybe someday he would find the connection that would finally stave off the loneliness that lingered within.

Instead of dwelling on the negative, Christian channeled his energy into encouraging Chris to explore her passions. She discovered a love for cooking, diving into the world of culinary arts through YouTube tutorials and library books. Her exploration of diverse cuisines and the stories behind them fueled her enthusiasm for this newfound skill.

Music became a shared passion. While Christian was no help in the kitchen, he was an invaluable mentor in music. He guided Chris in mastering guitar chords and picking techniques, eventually enabling her to confidently perform in public spaces and captivate audiences with her unique style.

By twenty-two, Christian and Chris had grown into distinct individuals, both physically and in their interests. Christian’s commitment to a fitness routine of running and biking along with rigorous muscle building training had sculpted him into a strong, muscular figure towering at six feet, four inches. Chris was a foot shorter and was lean and curvy with a graceful physique that reflected her feminine side.

Despite their differences in size, Christian and Chris crafted a disguise which allowed them to pass unnoticed—long hair, a hat and shabby paint spattered clothes—which allowed them to blend into the background seamlessly, making them anonymous in busy surroundings. This guise enabled them to transition between identities unnoticed, providing a semblance of normalcy in their reclusive life.

But the longing for a more fulfilling life lingered, both yearning for companionship. They grappled with growing frustration over their isolation. Harboring a deep-seated sadness, knowing that a conventional family life was seemingly out of reach.

The lifelong question of whether others shared this mysterious ability to transform remained unanswered. Despite extensive research, they found no clues in print beyond the natural world’s examples of sex-changing animals. This lack of understanding left them feeling isolated, haunted by the thought that they were unique and alone in the universe.

Their path to self-acceptance and finding meaningful connections would require courage and vulnerability. Embracing their past and the aspects of their dual nature had long led them in a path that ensured a lonely existence. Finding someone to share their life with would involve taking a leap of faith and trusting that there were people in the world who would love and accept them for who they truly were.

Christian hoped that by opening up, even just a little, they could begin to strip away the insecurity and build a foundation for a deep and meaningful relationship.

Christian and Chris’ journey is a poignant exploration of identity, creativity, and the human desire for connection, set against the backdrop of a life lived in the shadows. It’s a quest of self-discovery, identity and of the two learning to co-exist in their shared dual existence.
