Into the darkness
Luca
The scent of blood saturated the air as I silently tracked the wounded stag through the dense forest. Each step I took was deliberate, my focus unwavering. The chase had begun, and there was no force in the world that could halt me. My pack, loyal and fierce, trailed behind me. Their movements were fluid, precise, each one a perfect extension of the other. I had trained them well, sharpening their instincts until they became a deadly force. Marco, always by my side, moved with the same intensity. His eyes were sharp, his anticipation palpable. We were a team, unstoppable, in perfect harmony.
This was what I was born for—to command, to lead, to hunt. The thrill of the chase surged through my veins like fire, setting my blood alight. But even with the adrenaline pulsing through me, something was missing. I couldn’t place it yet, that strange emptiness lurking just beyond my reach, but I knew it was coming. A sensation I couldn’t ignore.
The stag’s strangled cry sliced through the air, a haunting melody that resonated in my bones. We were closing in, the gap between us narrowing with every heartbeat. Just a little more. A wicked grin spread across my face, the anticipation of victory electrifying my every nerve. The howling of my pack grew louder, the sound reverberating in the air like a symphony of savage determination. Then, in a single, swift movement, we pounced. The creature’s neck was suddenly within my grasp, my teeth sinking into its flesh, my body pinning it down with the weight of finality.
I stood over the fallen stag, my pack closing in around me. The hunt was over, but the feeling inside me was far from finished.
Marco’s voice broke through the silence. “You were faster than usual. Maybe we’re getting better at this.”
I glanced at him, a smirk tugging at my lips. “Maybe. But there’s something about today… it doesn’t feel like the others.”
He narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean?”
I hesitated, uncertainty gnawing at me. “I can’t explain it yet, but it’s like… something’s waiting. Something’s coming.”
Marco raised an eyebrow but said nothing. He knew better than to push me when I was in this kind of mood. “Whatever it is, you’ll deal with it like you always do,” he said, though his voice held a trace of doubt.
I didn’t respond, instead staring out into the darkening woods, the air thick with the scent of pine and earth. Yet beneath it all, something else lingered—an unfamiliar presence, just beyond my reach, a weight pressing against my senses. That’s when it hit me.
The sweetest, most intoxicating scent filled my nostrils, like honey blended with wildflowers in full bloom. It was so overwhelming, so pure, that it nearly consumed me. My heart raced, and I felt my pupils dilate, the world around me sharpening into an intense clarity. My mouth watered, the hunger growing with every passing second. I scanned the shadows, my eyes darting in every direction, searching for the source of the scent that now clouded my mind, but I couldn’t place it. It wasn’t coming from one spot—it surrounded me, enveloping me like a blanket of warmth and desire. I could feel it everywhere, suffocating me, pulling me toward it.
Marco’s voice cut through the haze, his brow furrowed in confusion as he watched me. “Alpha? What is it…?”
I tried to speak, to explain the sudden rush of emotions, but the words caught in my throat. The thick, intoxicating scent choked me, clouding my thoughts further. My chest tightened, and I growled out the only word that seemed to make sense, though it felt foreign on my tongue.
“Mate.”
