Behind 4 Walls

Ashlyn’s pov~

I groan waking up tired from being up with my littler sister Stevie all night who’s a newborn she’s barely a month old .

I sit up in bed and get up after making sure my little sister is still sleep, after I get in the shower and the water doesn’t get hot reminding me I was supposed to pay the bill yesterday but fell asleep as soon as I got home from work.

I groan and rush to shower and then I call the water people paying the water bill and they tell me it should be back on within the hour leaving me stressed because I have to get the kids ready.

I get dressed checking on my little sister and she’s still sleeping thank goodness, after I look at the time to see it’s early still meaning my mom is still sleeping which is awesome because she would be yelling right now if she wasn’t hung over.

I go to my little brother Cyrus room who’s 6 years old and wake him, he decided to wake up grumpy today. He wines and says,” nooo I’m tired “.

I groan and say,” cmon cy we need to hurry”.

He stops whining as I pick him up and pick out his clothes then take him to my room to wash him up with a towel since the water is still cold. I see my little sister is still sleeping so that’s great, I get my little brother dressed and he is now feeling better.

Cy says,” I’m hungry Lyn”.

I nod and say,” okay “.

I fix his hair and we brush his teeth then he sits on my bed.

I say,” let me know if Stevie wakes up”.

He nods eyes on the tv I walk out and go make breakfast for him which I made him some eggs and sausage and Stevie a bottle for when she wakes up forgetting about myself.I walk back to the room checking the time and see we have about a good hour left before we have to be gone to drop him off then I have school which I do online now since my mom has had Stevie.

As my little brother is eating Stevie starts whining so I grab her and feed her then change her diaper. I then sit Stevie in her baby swing and go pack the baby bag and my little brother’s backpack.

Cy says,” done”.

I turn around and he’s holding his plate up I smile and go grab it.

I tell him,“ good job”. I look at the time and see we have 30 minutes to be gone.

I hand him a baby wipe and say,” wipe your face and hands off I’ll be back”.

I take the baby bottle and the plate to the kitchen and just then I hear things falling upstairs letting me know our mom is waking up.

I hurry back to my room and say,“ cmon cy mom’s up”.

He rushes to my side and I rush to put Stevie in her car seat grabbing the bags then grab my little brother’s hand and we walk out my room.

We get out the door and I get them in the car safe and buckled up I get in and remember I forgot to lock my room door.

I look at cy and say,” I’ll be right back okay”.

He nods and I get out locking the car doors and go back in the house.

Just as I finish locking my room door I hear,” where are you little girl “?

I hear her yell,”ASHLYNNN”!!

I tip toe out down the hall hoping she isn’t in the kitchen and when I get there I get to the door and she spots me.

My mom says,” there you are little ungrateful brat”.

I glare and she says,” I need $30 bucks”.

I sigh and say,” I have to go”. I hurry out the door before she can catch me because she will block the door and I’d have to get physical to get back to my siblings.

Once in my car I drive off and say,” are you okay cy”.

He nods and says,” yes you okay”.

I nod and we sing songs on the way to his school that I enrolled him in since my mom got so wasted she couldn’t even walk out the house.

We pull up to his school and he says,” love you Lyn”.

I smile and say,” love you too cy”.

I get out and his teacher walks up and says,” hey “.

I smile and say,” hello”.

I sign him in and they walk inside the school before getting in I check to make sure my little sister Stevie is okay and she’s looking around so I drive off to the grocery store since we need more food.

I get out and grab my little sister putting the car seat in the cart and lock my car going in the grocery store. I pick out my little sister some formula then grab cy some snacks and us some dinner stuff while also some quick frozen foods.

I groan when I get a headache and bump into someone.

I say,” I’m so sorry sir”.

He chuckles and says,” it’s okay”.

I smile politely and he says,” need any help”.

I nod my head and say,” actually yes I can’t seem to find your pasta noodles they’re usually on isle 6”.

He nods and says,” ah follow me we did a little moving things around all yesterday so it’s on isle 10 now by the way I’m Mitchell”.

I nod as we walk and I say,” I’m Ashlyn”.

He nods and says,” and this cute little girl”.

I smile and say,” this is Stevie”.

He smiles and says,” ah they are good when they’re that young”.

I scoff and say,” hah tell that to my 8 hours of sleep I missed”.

He chuckles and we find the noddles he says,” here you go”.

I smile thanking him and he says,” have a great day”.

Just like that he walks off and I go check out rushing because I need to sign on for school.

I leave and head home once there I see my mom who says,” ahh there are my beautiful girls”.

I glare she’s being extra loud and Stevie is sleep.

I say,” mom hey Stevie is sleep”.

She scoffs and says,” sorry let me see my baby”.

I say,” are you even sober”.

I will not risk her dropping Stevie my mom says,” don’t ever ask me that I drank with you and I didn’t drop you”.

I scoff and say,” well come to me when you’re sober I have to go”.

My mom says,” cmon”.

I sigh and say,” fine but you need to sit on the couch”.

My mom does so and I take Stevie out the car seat and hand her to my mom who smiles and I smile seeing the look she has on her face.

My mom says,” she’s so small and adorable”.

I say,” and a handful but she’s little Stevie”.

My mom laughs and says,” I can take her tonight if you want”.

I raise a brow she’s only had Stevie about 5 times since she’s been born and the first 3 were in the hospital.

I say,”are you sure”.

She nods looking at Stevie amazed and I say,” okay sure but let me know if you need me”.

My mom nods and says,” how many ounces is she taking now”. I say,” 6 ounces and she gets gassy sometimes so you’ll have to stretch her legs”.

I say,” I have to put up the groceries and then to class so I need to go to my room”.

She nods and says,” thank you”.

I smile and nod putting up the groceries watching my mom a little then head to my room getting my laptop from out my clothes basket at the bottom because if my mom was to ever find it she will sell it.

I get on the computer login and begin to do my work once I finish I shut it down and put it back.

I yawn and realize how tired I am so I take a nap until my alarm goes off and I get up.

I walk out my room to find my mom but I hear Stevie crying and run to find her.

I arrive to see my mom drinking a bottle of liquor smoking a cigarette in her room and talking to Stevie crazy.

My mom says,” you ruined my life you’re lucky I love you”.

I listen a little more and my mom says,” now little girl your ungrateful just like your older sister”.

I glare because I was never ungrateful ugh I walk in and grab Stevie from where she was laying which isn’t her bed or swing.

My mom slurs her speech and says,” Wheree you think yoou going”.

I say,” mom she’s hungry and wet what did you do”.

My mom laughs and says,” please I let you cry for hours and you’re okay”.

I scoff and walk out her room closing her door leaving her to the love of her life that is alcohol and cigarettes and whatever else .

I make Stevie a bottle and change her then I feed her as I look in her teary eyes I tear up because why is our mother like this and not only that but I’m sure Stevie has been hungry for a while and I feel bad and it’s my fault I trusted her but I won’t anymore.

I put Stevie in her car seat and now she’s sleeping fed and clean, I make sure I grab everything and lock my room door this time.

Then I hear music come on and know that she’s going to be drunk for a while how did she even get drink since she had Stevie and asked me for money this morning.

I get Stevie in the car and then I drive off headed to pick up cy who’s standing there smiling talking to his teacher.

I get out and say,” cy”.

He runs to me and hugs me little arms wrapping around my legs making me feel real love.

Cy says,” Lyn I missed you”.

I smile and say,” I missed you too cy”.

His teacher smiles and says,” he’s a great kid very smart”.

I smile and say,” thank you”.

We leave the school and cy is telling me about his day.

Cy says,” we go to park”.

I shake my head because it’s our usual thing but I have something new for him to try.

I see him pout and I say,” let’s try something new”.

His eyes get big as he nods his head and says,” yea”.

I drive to our destination and it’s a trampoline park they have a few hours free for kids ages 6-8 I seen a ad across my laptop today.

I get the stroller out and then put Stevie in it after I get cy and the bags out locking my car.

We walk inside and cy immediately says,” wow”.

I giggle and walk to the front and say,” here for the 6-8 time”.

The girl nods eyeing me with shame and I don’t even care I get that a lot where people think these are my kids which they practically are.

She says,” please sign this form and put this on him will you be jumping too”.

I shake my head and she says,” will you be needing socks”.

I raise a brow and say,” he has some”.

She says,” he needs jumping socks they cost $5”.

I smile and say,” okay yes get him a small pair please”.

She grabs it as I grab the little change I keep in the baby bag but it’s not there I scoff.

I say,” she’s got to be kidding me”.

The girl says,” well if you don’t have it can’t jump and please step aside we have other customers”.

Well she’s rude I guess that’s where my mom got money from I always keep change or a few dollars in Stevie’s baby bag in case anything happens so sad she would go through the baby bag but not change or feed Stevie just a shame.

I step aside and say,” I have it no need to be rude”.

,“Ashlyn right”?

I turn around and see the same guy from the grocery store.

I smile and pull out the money from my purse handing it to the lady.

I say,” yes Mitchell right”.

He nods and the lady brings back the socks and I grab them.

The lady says,” okay next”.

Mitchell says,” 2 tickets for 6-8 time”.

The girl smiles and says,” okay is there anything else you need”.

He shakes his head and I see she didn’t even ask him if he needed socks.

We walk over to the trampolines and I put Cys socks on.

Cy says,” me goooo”.

I nod and he runs off falling when on the trampoline since it’s his first time. ,“ little guy seems to be enjoying it”.

I look to see Mitchell has sat by me and is giving 2 little girls some socks as they put them on.

I smile and say,” yea he’s enjoying it so you come here often”.

He nods and says,” yea all the time”.

I look for cy and find him jumping with the girls that are with Mitchell. I say,” are those 2 little girls yours”.

He chuckles and says,” oh no they are my little sisters”.

I nod and say,” same here”.

He gasps and says,”wow you’re awesome taking care of a little baby and a toddler”.

I wave him off and say,” you’re the one with 2 toddlers”.

He chuckles and I notice he has a nice smile.

Mitchell says,” looks like they get along”.

I look and laugh when I see them jumping holding hands.

Stevie starts to whine so I get her out and hold her.

I say,” hey girl”.

She eyes Mitchell who is baby talking to her.

I giggle and Mitchell says,” am I that funny I have your sister laughing too”.

I scoff and say,” hey no fair”.

He chuckles and I say,” so how old are you”.

Mitchell says,” I’m 24 and Megan is 6 while Erica is 8”.

I nod and say,” well I’m 17 and cy is 6 while Stevie is 1 month”.

He gasps and says,” wow you’re young but mature”.

I shrug and say,” yea this life chose me trust me”.

He chuckles and Stevie poops making me groan.

I say,” cy”. He hears me and runs over I say,” cmon I have to go change Stevie”.

He pouts and says,” play”.

I sigh and Mitchell says,” go on I’ll watch him”.

I smile and say,” thanks I’ll be right back 5 mins tops”.

He raises his brow smirking and says,” nah you can’t change a diaper that fast”.

I say,” tell that to my hands that have been changing diapers for 6 years”.

I walk off after grabbing Stevie’s baby bag and once I change her I walk out and back to where I find Mitchell watching the kids jump.

I say,” so what time is it”.

He gasps and says,” that’s was 3 minutes I must admit your fast”.

I nod and when the time is up for them to be jumping I’ve gotten to know Mitchell.

We walk outside and Mitchell says,” well it was nice seeing you”.

I nod and say,” same”.

Mitchell’s little sister says,” you’re very pretty”.

I blush and say,” thanks you too”.

The other one says,” cy come play with us”.

I look at Mitchell and he says,” she’s asking if you all can come play with them”.

I smile and say,” sure but not today tomorrow if you’re free”.

Mitchell nods and says,” yea give me your number”.

We exchange numbers and I load the kids up with the help of Mitchell.

I hug him and say,” thank you a lot”. Mitchell’s pov~

As she drives away I load up my sisters and we drive off to my house. I can’t stop thinking about Ashlyn she’s different but young so I should stay away.

I can’t believe she’s taking care of those kids just like me I never thought I’d fine someone like that. I’ve been taking care of the girls since Ashlyn’s age and still struggling to do so our parents are junkies so I have custody of the girls.

I text her just to make sure she’s made it home safely but get no reply so I go make the girls take a shower after I make some dinner while they do their homework.

I get a text back from Ashlyn who says -made it home safe thanks for asking did you make it home.

I text back and tell her -we made it home and glad you did too.

I finish making dinner and say,”girls”.

Next thing I know they come running to in the kitchen.

Erica says,” Mitch I hope dinner is done”.

I chuckle and say,” yes Erica it’s done now wash your hands and come eat please”.

They do as told and then we all sit down and eat lucky for me since I work at the supermarket I get a discount or else I don’t know how I’d be able to afford their favorites.

After dinner they say,” movie pleaseee”.

I smile nodding and Megan says,” I pick I pick”.

I look at Erica who shrugs and says,”go ahead”.

I smile and say,” that’s so nice of you Erica to let her pick”.

Megan says,” thank you”.

I say,” okay Megan go pick and Erica put the movie in please while I get snacksss”.

They squeal running out of the kitchen into the living room.

I get some snacks and a juice for them and soda for me when I join them in the living room the movie is about to start and the girls have their covers and cuddled up on the couch.

I say,” I’m here”.

They say,” shhhh”.

I chuckle and sit down in between them and sit snacks on each side of them then hold mines.

We watch the movie and they end up falling asleep on the couch so I shut the movie off and carry the girls to their room tucking them in and going back downstairs to clean up.

Once done I go take a shower and go to sleep.
