A Dance on Ice

The rink was silent, save for the sharp, rhythmic sound of skates slicing through the ice. Early morning light filtered through the high windows, casting a shimmering glow on the smooth surface. Taylor Lane stood at the edge, her breath billowing in soft clouds in the frigid air. The world outside was waking up, but inside this sanctuary of ice, time felt suspended.

She took a deep breath, tilting her head back, allowing the chill to wash over her. Today was the day she would finally conquer that jump. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, visualizing the perfect execution. It was the second-to-last hurdle before the regional championships, and she couldn’t let her nerves get the best of her.

With a determined glare, she stepped onto the rink, the cold biting at her ankles as she glided forward. Each stroke felt familiar and yet like a battle. Focus, Taylor. You’ve got this. A few practice runs and she knew she could nail it. With her favorite song echoing in her mind, she began her routine.

She weaved through her elements, each movement becoming more confident as she embraced the freedom that only the ice could provide. She spun and twirled, her dress swirling around her like the wind, the world fading away. But as she approached the jump—the Triple Salchow—her heart raced in a different way entirely.

Taylor felt the tension in her muscles, the way doubt crept in like cold water. Would she land it? The stakes felt especially high today. As a single mom, her coach had laid down a stern ultimatum. With her part-time job barely covering rent, a scholarship was her only chance to escape the confines of her daily grind.

Determined, she pushed off with her free leg, feeling the wind brush against her face. She inhaled sharply as she soared into the air—one, two, three rotations—before she extended her leg for the landing. For a blissful second, she felt weightless, untethered.

But then, her skate caught the edge of the ice, and everything came crashing down.

She landed hard, the impact sending shockwaves through her body. Pain shot up her leg as she crumpled onto the ice. The air rushed from her lungs, and for a moment, all she could do was stare up at the ceiling, blinking back tears of frustration.

“Taylor!” a voice interrupted her thoughts. Coach Reynolds was rushing towards her, concern etched across his face.

“You okay?”

She attempted a smile, but it faded quickly as pain spread through her ankle. “I think I just need a moment,” she replied, forcing herself to sit up.

He crouched beside her, his brow furrowed. “You’ve got to be careful. Competition is in less than two weeks. We need to tweak that jump—it’s too ambitious if you can’t pull it off clean.”

“I know, Coach. I’ll just…give it another shot,” she replied, wincing as she tried to stand.

“Rest. I’ll watch you next week.” He left her with a pat on the shoulder, leaving her alone with her thoughts.

“Great,” she muttered to herself, rubbing her sore ankle. The more she thought about it, the more overwhelmed she felt. “Just what I needed.”

As she sat on the bench, shaking off her frustration, she fished out her phone from her bag, scrolling through messages to distract herself. Maya, her best friend and biggest supporter, had sent several texts encouraging her to take a break and go to a charity hockey game that night. You need to live a little, Taylor! Hockey players are hot, and who knows? You might even meet one!

Rolling her eyes, she figured the last thing she needed was a distraction, especially with her focus pulled so tight. But something in her stirred at the thought. Maybe it would be nice to step outside her own head for a while.

With a reluctant sigh, she sent a quick reply: Fine, I’ll think about it. A small part of her knew that a night out couldn’t hurt; perhaps it was time to let loose a little, even if just to clear her mind.
