The neon glow of her new katana faded into Tokyo’s night fog as Mai fastened the plastic leather strap across her shoulder. She exhaled. Her arm hummed gently, in harmony with the city’s beat. A red phoenix curled along her skin, up her arm, gently pulsating with implanted nanotech with her family emblem, reimagined in code.
After scanning the city with her contact lenses’ augmented reality, the target the data courier who betrayed the Shinjuku Syndicate.
“Five minutes,” she whispered into the comm, her voice static silk.
Above, the Tokyo Tower burned red—an unwritten timer. Soon, very soon, the scales would tip in her favor.
