The Map That Shouldn’t Exist

Elias Crowe had mapped the dead.

Not the dead as in cemeteries and ruins—no, Elias had charted forgotten towns, phantom roads, and silenced civilisations. He was known in whispered circles as the Cartographer of the Lost. A fool to some. A seer to others.

One winter, buried in a damp, dust-choked box at an estate sale in northern Wales, he found something he should never have touched:

A map drawn in rust-brown ink that smelled like rot.

A forest.

Unlabeled. No region, no name.

Only four words scratched in a shaky hand at the bottom:

“Do not enter. It sleeps.”

Elias laughed when he read it. Superstition. He’d seen worse.

But when he scanned the coordinates, the place shouldn’t exist. It was in the middle of a blank, uncharted land, deep in the Brecon Beacons, where no path had ever been.

He should have burned it.

Instead, he packed his compass, his boots, and a bottle of ink.

The journey took two days.

No signs. No birds. The forest wasn’t seen, it was felt. Trees taller than giants. The air was thick, greenish, and still.

It was as if the earth had taken a deep breath and never exhaled.

And then, he stepped past the first tree.

The world behind him sighed shut.

The sound, like heavy roots dragging through sand.

He turned.

The path was gone.

The sky was gone.

Only the forest. Infinite and pulsing. The trees leaned, not with wind, but with intention.

He touched the bark.

It was warm.

It whispered.

“Elllliiiassss…”

He laughed nervously. “Sleep deprivation,” he muttered.

He walked.

Minutes passed. Or was it hours?

His watch stopped.

His compass spun like it was laughing.

And then he saw it—nailed to a tree.

A second map.

Older. Wetter. Torn.

And on it, a red X.

Scrawled beneath, written in the same blood-brown ink:

“You are already here.”

His throat went dry.

A scream echoed. Not near. Not far. Inside.

Branches above twisted like fingers. A low chime rang—metal against bone.

He looked up.

Hanging from the trees were… watches. Dozens. Hundreds. Ticking. Stopped.

He reached out to touch one.

It ticked once.

And then the clock bled.

Dark red, thick, dripping from the gears onto his hand.

He didn’t move.

Behind him, the forest breathed again.

And somewhere deeper…

Time woke up.

The blood ran thick down his fingers, warm as if it had just left a body.

Elias stumbled back, heart hammering. He wiped his hand on his coat, but the stain didn’t vanish. The colour spread. The more he rubbed, the deeper it soaked in, until his palm looked like it had been flayed.

The forest began to tick.

Not with time.

With hunger.

He heard it now. In the soil. In the bark.

A pulse.

Like a clock made of meat and bone.

And then—

Whispers.

Soft at first. Then all around.

Some from behind. Some beneath.

Some… from within.

“Cartographer…”

“He sees…”

“He came too late…”

The voices didn’t echo. They slithered.

He pulled out the map again. But it had changed.

The ink had bled outward, lines curling into new paths—paths he hadn’t walked yet. His bootprints now traced a crimson trail through the page.

And worse—he wasn’t alone on it.

Tiny stick figures dotted the trees.

One had a small X on its chest.

It pulsed. Slowly.

He blinked.

The mark was on his chest now, too. Burned into his coat.

“No,” he muttered. “No, this is a hallucination. A gas leak. A fungal spore. I read about this—nature tricks the mind—”

“You wrote this,” a voice said, clear, cold, close.

He turned sharply.

A child was standing just beyond the next tree.

Small. Pale. Eyes black as hollow knots in bark.

She was barefoot. Her skin was the colour of paper left in the rain.

And in her hands, she held...

His journal.

“You’re not the first to come here, Elias,” she said softly.

“But you may be the last who gets to choose.”

He stepped back. “That’s mine—how did you—?”

She opened it. The pages flipped on their own.

Every page had writing.

In his handwriting.

Day 12: I forgot how many suns I’ve seen. I’m losing track. I’m becoming bark.

Day 19: They whispered that the soil remembers.

Day 21: I miss having skin.

He hadn’t written any of this.

Not yet.

“This forest doesn’t keep time,” the girl said, smiling now, though her teeth were too many.

“It feeds on it.”

She vanished.

No sound. No rustle.

Just gone.

The journal dropped at his feet, landing on a new page:

Welcome to the Forest Where Time Sleeps.

We’ll keep your hours safe.

You won’t need them anymore.

Above him, the branches reached just a little lower.

And somewhere in the roots,

A clock made of teeth began to smile.
