Prologue

In the early hours of the morning, Eliza Blackthorne awoke to a loud pecking.

Drowsy, she stumbled to the window, rubbing her eyes and opened i to find the source of the noise. As she was still half asleep, the sight of the nightingale carrying two pendants containing a blue topaz each did not reach her brain.

She shooed the nightingale away. However, the b had other plans.

It flew into the room and dropped the two pendants it was carrying into the crib that carried two girls, both a year old.

The pendants, instead of falling into the crib directly, hovered above the girls, spinning slowly, before a pulse of amethyst-purple light filled the room, then, they each fell beside a girl.

The purple light the pendants emitted had fully awoken Eliza. She ran towards the crib and reached for one of the pendants.

Her hands trembled as she carefully scanned the pendant. She stared at it in horror, her breath quickening as old memories rushed back to her.

Her husband, Evan Blackthorne—awoken by the purple light—broke into her thoughts.

“You okay?” He asked, yawning.

“No…this…this cannot be true,” Eliza’s voice cracked, barely a whisper, as her eyes never left the pendant. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps, as if the weight of the moment was suffocating her.

Hearing that, Evan’s half awake expression morphed into an alarmed one.

He got up and hurried to her side, “What is it, Eliza?”

Eliza answered in a small voice, “This.”

She handed him the pendant, and he, too, stared at it in horror.

“No, no!” He muttered, still staring at the pendant. Eliza’s body shook as sobs racked her frame. “Why, why must it be our daughters.”

Evan paced around the room, his hands trembling, with a look of sorrow and fear.

Their daughters however, were completely oblivious to all of these.

They slept on peacefully, unaware of the dangers that lay ahead of them.
