Summary

In a mechanical city, driven by steam engines and its dystopian society, the only protection from the ‘deadly’ outside conditions is a barrier, which the ‘maidens’ project with their powers. For the people living in the outer circle, if you were pretty enough, you worked in the brothel. If not, you became a tinker, made to brave the wasteland, in order to sift ‘the trash’ – detritus left in the destruction caused by the flying monsters. Estelle is a tinker, and a ‘maiden’. The only maiden ever to have been born in the outermost circle. She loves her fellow tinkers and every day strives to help them, by excelling in her role as a maiden. Until, one fateful day when Estelle and her uncle dig out a stranger from the trash…
