Chapter 1

"Love is a punishment."

"Writer Anaya"

May You Fall in Love (God Willing)

May you fall in love — God willing,

May someone separate you from the one you love.

May your lips forget to smile,

And your eyes always remain tearful.

May you talk only about them,

May you always listen to their words.

May you stop in your tracks upon seeing them,

And may they walk away, eyes lowered.

May you be struck by such a pain of separation,

That you pray for union every moment.

May your dreams shatter completely,

And you gather the pieces, one by one.

May you wander from town to town,

Calling out their name in every street.

May your home burn before your eyes,

And you're unable to put out the fire.

May this prayer rise from your own heart:

"May no one else’s home ever burn."

May you fall in love — and believe in it,

And start studying metaphors for them.

If I say that love is a farce,

May you argue back, "No, it’s not."

May you fall in love — God willing...

---

In a park, two boys around 26 years old were seen talking to each other while running at the same speed.

Let’s try to go closer and listen to their conversation…

"Yesterday, Aunty called," one of the boys said, referring to the other boy’s mother.

Okay, then...?"

"She said she wants to convince you for marriage..."

"Really? And what did you say?"

"I just said I’ll talk to him about it."

"Hmm... okay."

"What do you mean 'okay'? Why don’t you just get married? What’s the problem? Why are you keeping everyone so worried?"

"There’s no problem. I just want to focus on my career right now."

"Your career is already set. Even if you don’t focus, your future generations can live off what you’ve earned."

"Alright then, see you at the hotel. It's getting late."

Both of them left the park and headed to their respective homes.

Wearing a black half-sleeve t-shirt with grey trousers, his hair was scattered across his forehead due to running.

He reached home just before it started to rain.

Climbing the stairs, he was heading to his room while Aon was coming down for breakfast.

"Good morning, bhai," Aon said as he came closer.

"Good morning, prince. Didn’t you go to school?"

"No, bhai."

"Why not?"

"My stomach was hurting, bhai."

"Did you hear, brother? It was happening—just as school time ended, it got better."

Kashaf said from behind.

"Brother, I mean it's happening…"

he stammered, a bit flustered.

"I’ll fix it now, come on."

He placed a kiss on both their foreheads and went to his room to get ready.

Haider was coming down the stairs.

His mother and aunt were busy serving breakfast.

His siblings were fighting, while the grandparents were enjoying the children’s chaos.

Dad and uncle were deep in their own conversation.

"Assalamu Alaikum," he greeted.

Everyone warmly returned the greeting.

Taking blessings from his grandparents, he sat down in his seat.

Mom served him breakfast on his plate.

Then everyone ate quietly without any noise or fuss.

But in between, he could clearly feel the eyes occasionally turning toward him.

Finishing breakfast, he dabbed his lips with a napkin and stood up.

"Okay Mama, I’m leaving now."

"You don’t have anything to say, son?"

Unable to bear his silence anymore, she finally asked.

"What should I say?"

He feigned ignorance.

She looked at her husband, who, with a subtle gesture of his eyes, signaled her not to say anything.

"Nothing, go on then. May Allah protect you."

"Okay, Allah Hafiz,"

he said, and stepped outside.

"Maybe Shano hasn’t talked to him yet," Dad said.

She sat back down, looking defeated.

"Hmm… could be."

It was the scene at the Rana household, where Hasnain and Jamila lived happily with their two sons, Yusuf and Anis, along with their wives and children.

The Ranas were wealthy by lineage — a noble family.

Yet, despite their riches, they didn’t believe in idleness.

If they were rich, hard work also flowed through their veins.

They were kind-hearted people, raised with excellent values and manners.

But… they had one flaw.

They didn’t like the idea of marrying their sons to girls from poor or middle-class backgrounds.

It wasn’t that they looked down on the less fortunate —

they genuinely respected and helped the needy with sincerity.

They just didn’t prefer having a middle or lower-class girl as a daughter-in-law.

They were all unaware that very soon,

a middle-class girl was about to enter their home…

and their son's life.

---

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

New day, new hope —

Starting my day with Alhamdulillah 🫰🏻"

She closed her diary, placed it on the writing table, and got up to pull the curtain aside.

Dark clouds loomed over the sky, and just looking at them brought a deep sense of peace within her.

Adjusting the curtain, she untied the scarf draped in prayer style and spread it over her shoulders. Slipping her feet into sandals, she ran outside.

Thunder cracked loudly, and with it came the first rainfall of the season…

"Mami… Mami, where are you?"

She called out, heading from her room to the small living room.

"Catch your breath, girl! I’m in the kitchen!"

Mami called out sternly, hearing her non-stop shouting.

"Oh, Mami! What are you doing here? You never take me seriously. Come on outside, I’ll do this myself."

"What’s going on? Why are you yelling so early in the morning?"

Mami asked, kneading dough.

"Please, my mood’s getting ruined now…"

She said dramatically, placing a hand on Mami’s arm.

"Girl, you’ll make me sick with all this lazing around! Go freshen up. I’m almost done. It’s just breakfast — not a big deal!"

She brushed her off, returning to kneading.

"Nope. I don’t care. Just leave it, I’ll do it myself. Go away!"

She rested her cheek on Mami’s arm, insisting stubbornly.

"Alright, alright. I’ll make it today, but from tomorrow, you’re doing it!"

Mami gave in.

"Promise?"

"Promise, my dear. Now tell me what happened? Why were you shouting?"

"Oh Mami! Do you know it’s raining? I feel alive again!"

She said, twirling around with joy.

"You’re not going anywhere in this rain. Sit quietly!"

Mami scolded a bit.

"Mami, listen… I was saying I am going outside."

She ignored her and kept on.

"Aroob!" Mami gave her a stern look.

"Please, I’ll just watch from under the shade… Pleaseee!"

She said, putting on the most innocent face.

"Fine. But don’t get soaked."

"Okay okay! Thank you!"

She kissed her cheek and ran out.

From a distance, she watched for a while… but then stepped out from under the shade.

How could she not?

Like showing a thirsty person a well and telling them not to drink…

She stretched her arms wide, face turned up to the sky, spinning in circles, and began to hum:

> "I never understood the language of rain,

Never tangled with the winds this way before,

Had no idea I even had a heart in my chest...

Nights here, mornings elsewhere,

Wanderlust always my companion...

Your eyes say, 'Stay, stay a little longer'

What has become of me?

My eyes search for you everywhere,

Without reason…

Stay, stay… that’s what your gaze says…"

Mami stood by the kitchen window, watching her.

So much this innocent girl had endured… and so much still awaited her.

Wiping away her tears, she got back to making breakfast.

Hours later, after soaking in the rain, Aroob came back inside.

Mami was sitting on the sofa.

"Didn’t you say you were just going to watch the rain?"

"Mami… it felt like someone inside me was shouting, 'Go, get drenched!' So I just did…"

"Grow up, Aroob. Go change quickly — you’ll catch a cold. I’ll make tea in the meantime."

"Okay, Mami!"

she said and ran to her room.

---

This was Aroob Rana, who lived with her Mami (Safia) in her house.

She was just 16 years old when her parents died in a car accident on their way back from the office.

She had lived alone with her parents in their house.

Though she was young and didn’t understand much, she knew what relationships like grandparents were.

Whenever she asked her parents about them, their only reply was:

"When you grow up, you’ll find out yourself."

At her parents’ funeral, her paternal relatives came — but they left with her father’s body and left her mother’s behind.

Not one of them placed a hand on the sobbing child’s head.

Watching the two people she loved the most being buried separately… any longing to ever meet her father’s side of the family died right there.

That’s when her maternal uncle and aunt brought her to live with them.

They had no children of their own — and Aroob was their only “daughter.” They loved her deeply.

Her uncle rented out her parents’ house, and all the rent money was deposited directly into Aroob’s account.

He was an honest man, working as a factory manager.

But one day, some co-workers falsely accused him of corruption. He was fired…

The humiliation hit him so hard that he suffered a major heart attack and passed away.

It had been nearly a year since his death.

Aroob was now 20 years old, studying in college.

Their household now ran solely on the rent from her old home.

Financially, things weren’t perfect — but they weren’t miserable either.

With dignity, they had three meals a day — and both Aroob and her aunt were always full of gratitude to their Creator.

---

"Aroob! Come, I’ll oil your hair — then shampoo tomorrow!"

No, Mami, I’m going to study…”

“Come here quietly!”

“Maaamiii…”

“Aroobbb…”

“Okay, okay, I’m coming! Don’t scold me.”

She made a face and sat down in front of her. Mami began applying warm oil to her hair.

“You’re not going to your in-laws’ house, are you? You have to apply oil yourself once a week, or your hair will lose its shine!”

“When am I even getting married?”

She held Safia’s hands, leaned her head back, blinked her eyes dramatically, and asked.

Shameless!

Safia laughed and playfully slapped her on the head. Aroob also laughed and sat up straight.

“Mami, I don’t want to get married.”

After a short silence, Aroob spoke thoughtfully.

“Why not? Don’t say that. May Allah bless you with a good fate.”

“Mami, I’m scared.”

“Why are you scared, my child?”

“Mami, everyone I’ve ever loved, everyone I’ve been close to… they all go away. And more than that, I don’t even know what kind of person the other one will be, what his family will be like… Will they even be willing to let you stay with us? And if they don’t, how could I live without you? I just don’t want to get married. I only want to stay with you, near you.”

“Aroob, my child, this is the tradition of the world — a daughter has to leave her father’s home. And as for me, how many days do I even have left? If something were to happen to me, where would you go? Let me at least settle you into your own home so I can die peacefully.”

“Mami, don’t talk like that. It scares me.”

Aroob hugged Safia tightly and started sobbing bitterly. She had witnessed so many deaths that just hearing the word made her feel horrified.

Safia, hugging her back and gently caressing her head, also began crying.

There’s no telling when death or life might come.

Once she passed away, who would Aroob have?

These thoughts had robbed Safia of her sleep for days now.

“My child, I was just talking casually. Don’t cry like this. It hurts me to see you in pain.”

With Safia’s comforting, Aroob slowly calmed down and pulled away from her embrace.

“You say such cruel things in such a casual tone,” Aroob said with mock complaint, looking at Safia, then laughed. Safia laughed too.

They both knew they were pretending to smile for each other — but still, they kept up the facade for one another.

It always happened like this.

It happened the same way today.

“Come on now, sit still. Let me braid your hair properly.”

Then Safia began to neatly braid her hair.

Aroob’s hair was very beautiful — silky, shiny, and brown.

---

He was sitting in his cabin, buried in some file…

When all three of them — the clowns — suddenly burst through the door.

“What the hell, yaar? Can’t you enter like normal people?” Haider asked with irritation.

“Nope,” Faraz said bluntly, dragged a chair, sat with his legs on the table like scissors, and leaned back comfortably. Shano and Kashif suppressed their laughter seeing Haider’s annoyed face and sat on the couch.

“You’re such a…”

“Yes, yes, I know I’m incredibly shameless. Tell me something new…”

He was shameless — he knew it.

Wallah, his shamelessness deserved a 21-gun salute.

“Why have you landed like a disaster this early in the morning?”

Haider said, trying to control his temper.

“We’re fine, but why do you look like you’re sitting on burning coals?”

Faraz raised an eyebrow and asked.

“Yaar, if you have something to say, say it. Otherwise, leave. Don’t turn my brain into yogurt.”

“Brain yogurt? You have a brain?”

Faraz acted shocked.

“Faraz, I swear I’ll smash your head.”

He was trying to provoke Haider — and it was working.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” Shano asked with concern.

“Did you come with good intentions?” Haider asked sarcastically.

“Why this ‘did you come’ nonsense? Should we just go back?”

Faraz said, now annoyed.

“We only came because Aunty invited us for dinner. Thought we’d drag you along too, but clearly your mood is in the gutter. Is that enough, or should I say more?”

Faraz put on a serious face, and all four of them gave a thumbs-up with smiles.

“That was such a cheap acting performance — I swear!” Haider said, now relaxed, leaning back in his chair.

“Unlike you, we’re not bored with life! So, are you coming or should we go alone?”

“I’m coming. Anyone else coming with you guys?” Haider asked, looking at all three of them.

“Nope. Aunty only invited us for dinner. We’ll just go eat there.” Kashif replied this time.

“Oh, you brought your tongue today? I thought you left it in the car,”

Faraz widened his eyes in mock amazement, and Kashif rolled his eyes in response.

“Okay then, let’s go.”

All four of them smiled and walked out of the office together.

They were all of similar height and age — and when they walked together, wallah, they were something special.

---

Let’s get to their introductions now:

> “I’m Haider Rana. The eldest grandson of Rana House.

In terms of work, I own a restaurant.

I run from the idea of marriage — because in my view, girls are nothing more than gold diggers.”

> “And I’m Faraz Zafar. I’m about 26 years old. I’m a Chartered Accountant by profession.

But my friends call me shameless.

And wallah, they’re absolutely right.”

> “And I’m Shano— wait, wait, let me finish my intro first!”

Shano tried to speak, but Faraz interrupted him.

"Yeah, so where was I… Oh right, I completely forgot to mention something. Not only am I good-looking, but I’m also well-mannered and kind-hearted."

"Alright, now you can start,"

Shano said, rolling his eyes at him and began speaking.

"I’m Shano bin Safdar. I don’t consider myself handsome, but… but the way girls keep turning to look at me forces me to blush."

He said this while pretending to blush — quite unconvincingly.

The other three stared at him in disbelief.

"Now that you’ve heard all their nonsense, meet me too…"

"I’m Kashif Khan. By profession, I’m a professor — but in my father’s eyes, I’m a wanderer (basically, good for nothing)."

"Why? Because even after doing an MBA, instead of joining his business, I chose the teaching profession."

They were all unaware that in the days to come, one of their friends would be diagnosed with an incurable illness.

Chartered Accountant s
