single chapter – The One Who Speaks to Shadows
Time was in an era when beginnings were still unknown. There was the God of Shadows—his name no longer spoken, though once he was the mightiest of all deities. He said nothing; darkness was his language. While other gods spoke, ruled, and fed on worship, he merely observed. But this silence unsettled the other gods and goddesses. For the silent one is unseen; you cannot predict what they will do.
One of the gods believed he must be destroyed. And it was he who first initiated the betrayal.
The God of Shadows did not die. Instead, he imprisoned the treacherous god within the shadows. He condemned him to wander as a consciousness, an echo, in eternal darkness. This act instilled fear in the other gods. They banded together and, during a celebration, deceived him. Behind a veil of revelry and light, they placed a seal upon him. The god was trapped in a dark void.
Hundreds of thousands of years passed. Perhaps millions... Humanity forgot him. In the early days of his sealing, shadows were deemed unsafe, and humans cursed the darkness. But he was still there. His consciousness remained awake. In the silence, he persisted, trying to hear a faint prayer or story with each passing day.Until one day...
He heard a voice in the darkness.
A girl.
She was just a child then. When left alone at night, she spoke to the darkness. As if someone were listening.
"Today, I was alone again."
"No one loves me."
"My family argued today. What does it mean to separate?"
"Do you know what it’s like to be invisible?"
The god... listened.
These words were the first human voice he had heard in ages, spoken solely to his existence. An unseen warmth filled him.
The girl spoke every night.
For years.
She cried. She laughed. She told stories. She whispered secrets. And the god, in the silence, became her sole confidant.
But one day... the girl didn’t come.
At first, the god waited patiently.
One hour.
Five hours.
A day.
Even he, who had endured years of silence in the seal, the master of time, could wait no longer.
With a single blow, he shattered the power that bound him. He searched for the girl’s planet. Silently, he descended to the world.
Walking through the shadows, he sought her.
The world he saw was far different from the one she had described. The world had changed.
There were monsters.
Destruction.
Blood.
And as humans tore each other apart, he searched for the silence. And he found it.
But what he found... was not as he had expected.
The girl was dancing amidst the war, as if in a trance. She was laughing. She destroyed monsters and humans alike, oblivious to their presence.
The god watched from afar.
The girl who once befriended the darkness... now seemed to embody it. But suddenly, she collapsed. She coughed up blood. The god immediately entered her shadow. He listened to her heartbeat. She was alive. And then... she began to speak again. This time in a whisper... apologizing.
"I should have talked, shouldn’t I?" she said. "I should have told you about this..."
The god said nothing. But a feeling stirred within him.
If she could still speak... she was still that girl.
Days passed. The girl grew more ruthless, but every night, she continued to recount her deeds to the darkness. Though she didn’t know it, the god looked at her as no one else did, listened to her as no one else could.
Then one day, the girl suffered a grievous wound. She couldn’t speak. For a week, there was silence. The god felt fear for the first time. This silence was different. A maddening, burning silence.
And so, the god entered her mind. He read her heart’s thoughts:
"It’s so quiet... I’m cold... But I’m burning too... I’m balanced... My head aches from the silence... Am I going mad?... I want to destroy everything..."
In that moment, he made a decision. He would give her a gift. Not a power... a friend. A notification appeared before the girl:
"New Ability Gained: The Language of Shadows."
The girl flinched and looked.
"Do the shadows speak to me?" she murmured.
And in that moment...The shadows answered.
At first, the voices were incomprehensible. Like an unknown language. Muffled, cracked. The voices came from everywhere and nowhere at once. But over time, the god’s voice became clearer. The girl began to understand. In every dark corner, there was a voice speaking to her. Sometimes it carried wisdom. Sometimes stories. Sometimes jokes.
When the girl, looking out the window, giggled as if she heard something... no one knew why. But she knew.
Because there was someone in the shadows. A shield against her loneliness... Breaking the silence on her behalf... Always there... A god.
But despite all this, the god was unaware of one truth. He didn’t know why he wanted to protect her every moment, why, though he could hear her voice even in the daylight, he waited patiently for her voice every night, why her pain caused his heart to ache.
He hadn’t yet understood why he was so bound to her existence.
And the girl... She still didn’t know who she was speaking to. To her, the darkness was merely a friend. The shadows sometimes whispered, sometimes listened, sometimes made her laugh. She didn’t know that the voice coming at night was the echo of a sealed god.
One protected unconsciously, the other trusted unconsciously. Neither had yet uncovered the truth. But the words spoken in the darkness held power. One day... those words would awaken the truth. And when that time came, neither the girl... Nor the god would remain the same.
The god, unknowingly, had fallen in love with a human.
