Ch.1 / 3

Thanks to my dear friend who made my OC come to life; she produced the perfect image of Siri🥹

“I’m sorry... But who are you?”

Jungkook stops breathing. His heart hammers in his chest as he stands frozen at the edge of the hospital bed, staring at Siri. His Siri. His girlfriend—well actually, his fiancée of only eight days.

He had proposed to her eight days ago; the night of the tragic accident.

The accident which led to her being all bruised, battered, and in a coma—and it was all his fault. Jungkook was the one driving.

He came out with just a scratch on his face while she has her head all bandaged up, and her arm in a cast. And right now, she’s looking at him with a cautious and confused gaze.

Jungkook’s heart pounds so loud, it’s the only thing he can hear in his ears. She doesn’t remember me.

There was no recognition of Jungkook in Siri’s eyes. No soft smile, and no hint of that warmth he was used to seeing. She’s looking at him like he’s a stranger. Like he’s no one.

She truly doesn’t remember him.

“I-I’m Jungkook,” he stutters, trying to urge away the burning prickle behind his eyes. His throat tightens as he steps closer, careful to not startle her. “I’m your fiancé...”

Siri’s eyes go wide with disbelief. “I’m... engaged?...” Her gaze drops to her left hand in the cast where she sees a beautiful sparkly diamond on her ring finger. “How long have we been together?”

“Three years,” he says softly. “I proposed to you eight days ago... The day of the accident...”

Jungkook looks down, blinking fast as his tears are almost going to fall. “I’m—” He swallows the lump in his throat. “I’m the reason this happened to you,” he murmurs, doe eyes glistening with regret.

“It’s all my fault. There was a drunk driver that hit us but I was the one driving and—god, baby—” his voice cracks. He finally looks up, eyes red and watery, pleading with a woman who no longer knows who he is.

“I know you don’t remember me right now, but I’m so, so sorry.”

He walks around the bed, and reaches for Siri’s hand with shaky fingers, brushing his thumb over her knuckles. “I’d trade places with you if I could,” he croaks. “In a heartbeat.”

Siri doesn’t pull away from his touch. Her gaze just softens on this man in front of her, feeling bad for him as he cries for her. She can feel the ache in his voice, even though she doesn’t understand his pain.

“I’m sorry,” she says. “This must be so hard for you... But you do seem... Kind.”

The smallest glint of hope lights in Jungkook’s eyes and he nods, needing her to believe him. “I am. I promise I am.”

“I wish I could remember you,” she says apologetically. “But if we really were together that long, then... I’m sure I must’ve loved you.”

Jungkook sniffles and gives a tearful smile. “You did. And it’s okay. We’ll take our time with your memories, and I’ll be here to help you every step of the way.” He lifts her hand and presses a kiss to it.

Siri just watches him with a small, sad smile, trying to make sense of the man who calls her baby. The man who’s crying like he’s lost everything and who claims to be hers.

“Can I ask what happened to the drunk driver?” she asks softly.

Jungkook’s jaw clenches and fingers tighten slightly around Siri’s at the mention of the driver. His expression hardens at the thought of them because in reality, it was their fault any of this even happened.

“They didn’t make it,” he says quietly with bitterness. “Died at the scene.”

Siri looks down at her lap and her lower lip quivers. She blinks quickly a few times, and when she finally lifts her gaze again, her eyes are glassy with tears. “That’s really sad,” she murmurs. “Even if he was drunk, it’s sad that a life was lost...”

Jungkook squeezes her hand gently, his expression softening at the sight of his fiancée’s empathy and her sweet, forgiving heart.

“I know,” he says. “But you’re safe. That’s what matters now.”

She nods and sniffles, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

Jungkook brings her hand to his lips once more, “Don’t worry. Everything’s going to be okay.”

The next day, Jungkook walks into Siri’s hospital room with a smile while carrying a small paper bag in his hands.

“Morning,” he says almost bashfully, taking a seat next to her bed. “I brought you something.”

Siri tilts her head curiously. “What is it?”

He places the paper bag gently on her lap. “Some of our memories. I thought maybe these could help.”

She gives a smile, hands moving carefully to open the bag. She pulls out a stack of polaroids; one of them both wearing bucket hats, of Jungkook doing a handstand, one of Siri mid-cartwheel, and one of them smiling on a beach, eating ice-cream. Siri studies that one carefully.

It looks like it was taken a few years ago considering there were no tattoos on Jungkook’s right arm in the photo, but he has some now on his hand. She also notices she looks genuinely happy, and the way Jungkook holds her waist looks intimate.

Next is a strip of photobooth pictures from a carnival, one with four frames. The first is them doing a silly face. The second, both of them laughing. The third, Jungkook kissing her cheek while she rolls her eyes. And the last one, she’s looking at him with what could only be seen as love while he’s smiling like a bunny.

“We look... really cute together.”

“We were—sorry, we are,” Jungkook corrects gently, his gaze lingering on Siri with tender affection. “You and I both loved carnivals, fairs, theme parks... anything that got our adrenaline pumping. We always made a rule to go on the craziest rides first.”

“That sounds like me,” Siri nods. “I do like adrenaline rushing things. It’s funny. I can’t remember much, but that part feels right.”

Jungkook beams at her, his heart swelling with delight. “That’s good. Means your memories are still in there. Just needs time.”

She smiles again. “How did we meet?”

“At a theme park, actually,” Jungkook tells her eagerly, happy to relive those days. “You were there with your girlfriends, and I was with my mates. Somehow we both ended up being the odd ones out and we got paired up on a rollercoaster.

“You grabbed my hand halfway through the ride since you were scared, but then you started laughing so hard after the first drop. I looked at you and just... I don’t know. That was it for me.”

“Aw, that sounds really sweet.”

“It was. You made the first move, too. You told me I had ‘crazy rollercoaster hair’ and then asked for my number before we even got off the ride.”

Siri laughs, covering her mouth. “I did that?”

“Yeah, you were bold and so full of life. I’ve missed that.”

Siri’s smile falters lightly at Jungkook’s words. She reaches over and gently squeezes his hand. “Hey, I’m still in here somewhere. Just... waiting for the right memories to wake me up.”

Jungkook squeezes her hand back. “It’s okay if you don’t remember. I’m just glad you’re alive and still here. We can make new and better memories, anyway. Unforgettable ones.”

It’s been ten days since Siri woke up from her coma, and it was time to bring her home.

Jungkook brought her back to their shared apartment, and for Siri, it was all unfamiliar.

She could see Jungkook tried his best to make her comfortable. He said he wanted it to feel ‘just like before’ by stocking the fridge with her favourite strawberry milk, lighting vanilla scented candles around the place that she apparently used to love, and cooking her favourite meal; crispy pork belly on rice.

It was a lovely effort from her fiancé and Siri appreciated everything. However, during their first night together, Jungkook climbed into bed after her and stayed on his side, careful to not touch her. There was silence between them, but it was a calming type of feeling.

That was until Siri had something on her mind.

“Hey um, Jungkook, can I ask you something?”

“Of course. Ask me anything.”

She hesitated, but this question had been on her mind ever since she woke up.

“I’ve been wondering... why hasn’t my mother tried to contact me? Or my friends Jimin and Taehyung? I’ve been close to them since uni, and I mean, if you and I were together for three years, they must’ve known about you and about us, right? And my mum... she must’ve been worried when I was in the hospital, but she never visited me...”

Jungkook stayed quiet for a moment as he thought about how to answer. The topic of her mother and friends were hard because they didn’t bring nice memories.

“Well... You had a falling out with your mum a few months before the accident... It was about your dad. You found out she started seeing someone new pretty soon after he passed, and uh... you didn’t take it too well. You felt like she was trying to erase him. Like she moved on too fast.”

“Really?” Siri’s brows furrowed slightly as she tried to process his words.

“Yeah, you said you couldn’t look at her the same way,” Jungkook continued. “There was a big fight and you stopped speaking after that. I didn’t want to bring it up earlier, but that’s why she hasn’t reached out. I don’t think she knows how to... or if she’s even welcome to.”

“That’s a shame...” Siri murmurs, feeling a little confused but at the same, it was understandable. “But I get it. I get why I’d be mad at her. I don’t think I’d take that lightly either.”

Jungkook nods even though Siri can’t see him in the dark. “Yeah. You said it felt like a betrayal.”

“And what about my friends?”

She hears Jungkook exhale through his nose before answering. It was almost like he was annoyed with the question.

“They kind of drifted after you moved out here with me. They stopped reaching out as much, and so did you, and eventually... it got to a point where they weren’t really part of your world anymore.”

Siri swallows thickly and her voice comes out faint. “I see...”

“I’m sorry. All this is probably not what you wanted to hear.”

“It’s okay,” she replies with sadness laced in her tone. “That’s life, I guess. People come and go...”

Siri feels Jungkook move and suddenly his hand is searching for hers in the dark where he holds it gently. “Please don’t be too sad. You have me and I won’t leave you.”

“Thank you.” She squeezes his hand.

After a moment of silence, Jungkook decides to change the subject.

“Hey, can I um... Can I hold you? Please?”

Siri turns her head slightly, finding the outline of Jungkook in the dark where his eyes were already looking at her and waiting. She almost couldn’t hear him breathing as if he was holding his breath, likely worried of rejection.

“It’s just that I’ve missed you,” he explains. “But if it’s too soon, I understand.”

Siri thinks about it and the past ten days since she woke up from her coma. Jungkook’s been with her nearly every day; sitting by her bedside, telling her stories, brushing her hair gently behind her ear when he thought she was asleep. He brought her favourite foods to the hospital, remembered little details about what she supposedly liked, and he’s never once crossed a line. He’s been patient, careful, and almost too gentle sometimes.

Then there were the photos he brought in the day after she woke up. The polaroids and picture booth strips of their memories that showed they were obviously in love.

So, Siri nods and says to him, “Yeah, you can.”

Jungkook’s heart almost leapt out of his chest as he was so happy to hear that.

He shuffles close enough to feel her head under his chin and her hand near his chest. He places his arm around her waist where his hand rests lightly on her lower back. He feels her shift closer to him where she nuzzles into his chest, and it makes him smile. He holds her a little tighter, savouring her warmth. Savouring her in his arms again.

And then, he lets out a shaky little exhale as if he had been holding his breath all day. Being near her again, like this, was just so special to him, and it was progress in rebuilding what they had.

“Wow, it’s so beautiful here.”

“Thought you might like it. This was our favourite spot.”

Siri steps out of the car, staring at the lake in front of her while Jungkook is at the trunk, getting a basket of food and a picnic blanket out. Two weeks have passed since she’s been back home and Jungkook wanted to take Siri out on a date to try jog more of her memory.

So far, she remembers his favourite coffee is caramel macchiatos, banana milk is his favourite comfort drink, and she recalls calling him ‘Kookie’ which delighted him the most.

He takes her hand and leads her to a flat patch of grass right near a big tree where he begins setting everything up. The blanket goes down first, then the basket opens. Strawberries, cookies, chips, and a flask of iced chocolate appear—all things Siri loves.

She lowers herself onto the blanket, watching Jungkook place the food and drink neatly in the corner. He then sits next to her, resting his back against the tree as he says, “You always said this place felt like it didn’t belong to the real world.”

She smiles softly, eyes on the lake. “Maybe that’s why I liked it so much. The real world is... a lot to handle sometimes.”

He chuckles and nods. “Yeah. That’s why we’d come out here when life got too noisy.”

Siri takes a strawberry and bites into it, her lips quirking into a smile. “You remember a lot.”

“I remember everything,” he says, his eyes not leaving hers.

He starts sharing stories about their time together; road trips, more theme parks, and rainy mornings spent curled up on the couch together watching Marvel movies. Siri smiles along with Jungkook, letting her body lean into his, getting cozier and more comfortable with him. And when he pulls out a cookie and feeds it to her, she bites into it with a sweet smile.

She watches the way the lake is so quiet and still, and then, she feels the urge to do something. She moves to position herself in a way that she can gently lay her head in Jungkook’s lap.

He freezes for a moment as his breath hitches.

Slowly, he raises his hand to Siri’s hair, brushing through it with slightly shaky fingers. “Y-you used to do this all the time,” he says quietly. “Lay in my lap like this. Pretend to nap just so I’d play with your hair...”

She tilts her head to look up at him and softly smiles. “I guess it’s just muscle memory.”

Jungkook looks down at her, his eyes becoming a little teary. “You’re slowly coming back to me.”

He couldn’t help himself after that. He leans down and kisses her.

It’s gentle at first, hesitant and full of longing, but Siri doesn’t push him away. She lets him kiss her. She even kisses him back and he couldn’t help but deepen the kiss. He cups her cheek while her hand curls into the front of his shirt, pulling him closer.

Things between them get hotter, and when they finally feel like they need air, they stop, but they don’t part. Just rest their foreheads together.

“God, I’ve missed you,” Jungkook says as he rubs his nose against hers.

“I’m right here, Kookie. I might not be the same girl you fell in love with, but I’m here.”

“I still love you,” he affirms. “No matter what.”

“I can see why the girl I used to be loved you too.”

“Yeah?” Jungkook grins.

Siri nods with a smile as she cups his handsome face, “Yeah. I’m getting there.”

Jungkook leans into her touch as if it’s the only thing he’s ever wanted.

And Siri lets him believe it.

Life with Siri is better now for Jungkook. He didn’t expect to feel this way after the car crash. For eight days while she was in a coma, he sat in that hospital chair watching her chest move up and down with her breathing, praying she would wake up and not hate him for the accident.

When she finally did wake up, he made it his mission to take care of her. To show her that love was still here, even if her memories weren’t. To show her that he is all she needs, and he’ll do whatever it takes for her. Every day was basically a chance to win Siri back, and Jungkook was nothing but devoted to her.

But to some people, his version of love could be misconstrued.

There was one day at a cafe where Jungkook told a coffee barista off for flirting with his fiancée.

“Hey, man,” he stepped in front of Siri, his glare firm on the barista, “she’s taken. Can’t you see that damn ring on her finger?”

The barista blinked, a little stunned. “Whoa, hold on, I wasn’t even trying anything.”

“Then stop acting like you were.”

Siri was a little startled with Jungkook’s behaviour. She wasn’t upset nor frightened, just surprised. At the time, she didn’t say anything since it was so random, but Jungkook didn’t need validation to know he was doing the right thing anyway.

Some would call his reaction jealousy or possessiveness, but Jungkook believed he did it for love. Siri was his and he didn’t want to lose her to anybody. That’s what love is, right? Loyalty and protection.

When Siri mentioned one night that she wanted to call her mother, Jungkook reminded her of the pain her mother caused. He told Siri he just wanted to protect her from reopening wounds she didn’t remember having.

"You’ve been through enough, baby. Let’s not go backwards,” he told her.

It wasn’t manipulation that made Jungkook stop Siri from calling her mother, it was love.

When Siri brought up wanting to go back to work as a physiotherapist (because she remembered she studied that), Jungkook turned down the idea of her going back. He even told her that she didn’t need to work and that he would cover everything. He also said he would work from home since he was in IT.

That wasn’t him controlling her or isolating her from anybody that wasn’t him. That was him wanting to keep her safe and close to him because he didn’t trust others to take care of her the way he could.

They ended up compromising that Siri could go back to work part-time for three days a week. That way she wasn’t too bored at home all the time. Except, Jungkook would be there to drop her off and pick her up each day.

But then Jungkook caught Siri texting someone.

He worked from home at that point so he could always be around. It wasn’t out of convenience, but to be helpful to his one and only love. To make her tea when her head hurt, to warm her heating pad when her arm ached, and to remind her to rest when she got too curious about the world she didn’t remember. He wanted to be her constant.

But one night, while Siri was curled up on the couch with her phone in hand, Jungkook was walking past to head to the kitchen when he saw her texting someone.

He froze behind her for a second, just long enough to catch a glimpse of the name on the screen and the last two messages in the thread.

Siri: Thanks for helping me

Jimin: Always here for you. Be careful with the job

“Why are you messaging Park Jimin?” Jungkook suddenly asked, keeping his tone calm but firm, with a hint of disapproval and some anger, like when a parent catches a child doing something wrong.

The thing is, Jungkook never liked Jimin. The guy was always too smiley with Siri, always standing too close to her, and laughing a little too much at her jokes. And Taehyung was just as bad. When Siri moved here, Jungkook was relieved—grateful, even—that those two naturally faded from her life.

But after seeing Jimin’s name on her screen, it felt like a step backwards. It was as if Siri was slipping back into something that didn’t belong in this new chapter—in their new chapter.

Siri flinched as she didn’t realise Jungkook was behind her. “I just thought he might help me remember more,” she said innocently, eyes searching Jungkook’s as she didn’t understand the problem.

Her heart raced though. She found herself feeling worried, and maybe even a little bit scared considering the slight darkness in his eyes.

Jungkook forced a small smile. “What job?” he tried to ask casually.

“Huh?” Siri furrowed her eyebrows.

“Jimin’s message,” he clarified, trying to seem casual. “I saw him mention a job.”

“Oh... I told Jimin I’ve started working again. He was just being supportive.”

Jungkook nodded slowly, processing the situation. “You didn’t mention you were talking to him.”

“I didn’t plan to...” Siri admitted with a pout as she looked down at her lap. She suddenly felt bad for messaging Jimin, even though it didn’t make sense for her to feel bad. What was the harm in trying to ask for help?

“I was flicking through my contact list and I figured why not message him? I just want help remembering things...”

Jungkook studied her face for guilt, defiance, or anything that might show she’s lying, but all he finds is innocence and confusion which makes him soften.

He reached out and brushed a thumb against Siri’s cheek. “You know you don’t need to rush into anything,” he said gently while looking into her eyes with unwavering devotion. However, there was also a tinge of firmness in his tone, as if there was no room for argument. “You don’t need anyone else to help you remember. You’ve got me.”

Siri felt her heart jump and a strange chill went down her spine. She gave a smile and nodded at her fiancé, accepting his words because she didn’t want to upset him. Doing so felt like it would be the wrong move.

Later that night, when Siri was asleep, Jungkook stayed up late, scrolling through her messages. The cloud syncs everything now; it was a little precaution he took. Just in case.

He just wanted to make sure his fiancée isn’t straying or getting any new ideas. He’s fully committed to her and he just wants to make sure she’s fully committed to him too.

Jungkook loves Siri more than anything and he wasn’t going to lose her again. Ever.

And he was going to give her the best he could. And what’s best for her...

Is him.
