1- No... Please...
Sending a smile to the guy as he hands me back my card, I carefully place it into my wallet and then into my purse. I pick up the shopping bag with the shoes I just purchased and thank the clerk as I leave the store. Stepping out into the bustling mall, the scent of fresh coffee wafts from a nearby café. The sound of chatter and footsteps fills the air as I make my way toward my friends sitting at a table. I realize how much I dislike crowded places, but I push through, sending my best friend a smile as she hands me a drink. I settle into one of the empty chairs, placing the straw into my mouth and taking a big gulp of the ice-cold liquid. “Thanks, girl, I needed that,” I say with a smile.
Then I heard it—the sound of heels clicking rapidly toward us. I turned to see a girl from our group rushing over, waving her hands frantically. “Oh my god, you guys! You’ll never believe what I just saw coming out of Victoria’s!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with excitement. “I saw a group of guys storming into the mall, yelling at someone. It was awful!”
“What?!” I gasped, nearly choking on my drink. “Who were they? What happened?” My heart raced as my friends leaned in, their curiosity palpable. The mall’s atmosphere shifted, the air now heavy with tension and concern.
“Come on, let’s go see what’s happening,” she urged, grabbing my hand and pulling me to my feet. I stumbled slightly, catching my balance. For a moment, I hesitated, searching for a reason to stay behind. But my curiosity won out, and I followed her, my steps quickening as the noise grew louder. My heart pounded with each step, the charged atmosphere of the mall making it feel as though something significant was about to unfold.
Zoey walks with me. She is my best friend, and we couldn’t be more different. She is bold and outgoing, while I tend to be more reserved. She loves hanging out and partying every weekend, while I work tirelessly to cover my father’s medical expenses. I can be a know-it-all, while she struggles with many things. My hair is naturally curly and blonde, while hers is sleek, raven black. She has striking brown eyes, while mine are light blue and grey, like storm clouds. Despite our differences, we share a deep bond, and I appreciate her unwavering support. I noticed several people rushing away from the scene and heard several shouts. The guys had guns. I immediately thought about running the opposite way away from the threat I knew was there.
“Wait, stop!” I shouted, trying to get their attention.
Rachel turned around, fire in her eyes. I could tell she was annoyed. “What, why are we stopping? The guys are just over there,” she pointed to a courtyard.
“I know, but we can’t just run into danger like that,” I said, my voice trembling slightly.
“Rachel turned around, fire in her eyes, clearly annoyed. ‘What? Why are we stopping? The guys are just over there,’ she said, pointing to the courtyard.
I hesitated, my voice trembling slightly. “I know, but we can’t just run into danger like that.”
“Whatever, you’re just always ruining the fun,” Rachel replied, turning and storming toward the courtyard.
As I stepped closer, the scene was grim. Six men in black suits surrounded one man, their guns pointed at him. Others stood nearby, unarmed, as if they were part of it. Then I saw him—a man in the middle, shouting at someone on their knees. His voice was aggressive, demanding, “Tell me where it is. I know you know where he stashed it.” His back was to me, but I noticed his dark reddish-brown hair and dark blue suit.
The man on the ground answered, and the man in blue didn’t like it. He spun around, shouting, “GET OUT OF HERE, EVERYONE GO!”
At his sudden outburst, I nearly jumped, my heart racing. Despite the fear coursing through me, I couldn’t help but notice that not everyone around me fled the scene. The scene before me was both terrifying and strangely captivating. His intense gaze held me frozen to the spot, his dark features both intimidating and oddly alluring. “Come on, Gracelyn, we need to get moving,” Zoey yelled, her voice urgent as she tugged at my wrist, trying to pull me away.
I glanced up as she let go of my arm and sprinted away, her fear evident. My gaze swept the scene, my mind struggling to process the chaos unfolding before me. It wasn’t until the sharp crack of the first gunshot pierced the air that my instincts kicked in. I ducked instinctively, my heart racing, and sprinted with everything I had, desperate to escape the danger. The roar of gunfire echoed around me, each shot a chilling reminder of the peril I was in. I lost track of my friends in the frenzy, my focus solely on survival as I made my way toward an exit.
As I passed through the doors, I noticed a couple of guys wearing black suits standing on either side of the exit. They both stepped forward. One holds his hand in front of my face and says, “Stop. We have a few questions for you.”
I hesitated, my breath caught in my throat as I stared at the men. Their cold, unyielding expressions sent a shiver down my spine. “What do you want?” I asked, my voice trembling.
The taller one stepped closer, his hand firmly gripping my arm. “We just want to talk,” he said, his voice unnervingly calm, yet it sent a chill down my spine. “We just need to know where that flash drive is,” he demanded, his voice cold and unyielding. I glanced back at him, my heart racing as I noticed a black Yukon pulling up beside us. Two more men in black suits climbed out, their presence intensifying the tension.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I stammered, trying to pull away.
The taller man’s grip tightened, his eyes narrowing menacingly. “We know you have it,” he growled, his voice low and threatening. “And we’re not leaving without it.”
Panic surged through me as I realized the full extent of the danger I was in. “I’m sorry, but I don’t have a flash drive!” I shouted, my voice trembling as I tried to pull away. He tightened his grip on my wrist, causing me to wince in pain. “Please,” I pleaded, my voice barely above a whisper, “let me go.”
The other man stepped closer, his cold, unyielding eyes fixed on me. “We don’t have time for games,” he sneered, his tone dismissive. “Hand it over, or things will get worse for you.”
My mind raced, searching desperately for a way out, but their intimidating presence left me paralyzed with fear. “I... I don’t have a flash drive,” I stammered, my voice shaking. “I just bought these shoes. You can have them... just let me go!”
He sneered, tightening his grip further, causing me to cry out in pain. I knew he was leaving a mark on my wrist. I tried to pull away, but he was too strong. Tears streamed down my face as I realized how helpless I was.
“Fine,” he said coldly, “but remember, I warned you.” He nodded to the other man, who began rifling through my bags.
I watched in horror as the man grabbed my bag and purse, dumping their contents onto the ground. “Stop... please,” I pleaded, my voice trembling. “I don’t have the flash drive... you’ve got the wrong person!” My heart raced as I watched him rummage through my belongings, fear gripping me tighter with every passing second.
When he didn’t find what he was looking for, he turned to my purse, continuing his invasive search. My eyes widened in disbelief as he pulled out a flash drive I had never seen before from one of the zipper pockets. Where did that come from? I thought, my mind racing to make sense of the situation.
The man holding my wrist snatched the flash drive from his companion. My pulse pounded in my ears, and I could feel panic rising, my mind spinning with confusion and dread.
The man sneered, tightening his grip on my wrist, causing me to wince in pain. “So you had the drive all along. Be ready to pay for keeping your filthy mouth shut!” he growled, pulling me roughly toward the vehicle.
Tears streamed down my face as I pleaded with them, “No, please let me go. I promise I don’t know where that drive came from... I didn’t know it was there.” My voice trembled, my heart pounding with fear as I struggled to break free from his grasp. But it was no use—he was too strong.
Without warning, he pushed me down into a seat, covering my mouth and nose with a cloth soaked in chemicals. The sickly sweet scent invaded my senses, overwhelming me. My vision blurred, and darkness began to close in. The last thing I heard before losing consciousness was their voices, cold and urgent: “Come on, hurry up. The boss won’t be happy if we’re late with the girl.” Then, the blackness swallowed me whole.
