Prologue: Where it all began.
The house was covered in blood. The scent of blood and death filled the air, thick enough to choke on. Lifeless bodies were scattered on the floor, the walls painted red after the aftermath of something horrible
Mason stood frozen in the middle of the chaos that was unfolding before his own eyes - stuck between running......or dying by his father's side.
"Wait, no. I can't leave you here!"
" Mason, go! I can't hold them back forever!"
" No, I'm not going anywhere! Not unless you come with me!"
" Son, listen to me. There's no time to discuss this. You have to run - and you're going to have to do it now."
" But I-I can't.....I can't just leave you here, you promised we'd stay alive together. Y-you promised m-me."
Said Mason, his voice shaky and desperate.
His dad looked up at him with a faint but genuine smile.
"I know, I know...mase. I'm sorry - but promise me when I let go of this door, you'll run and not look back."
" I-I can't... You can't let g-go, If you do you'll- "
Mason stood frozen in place. Then his dad said something - barely a whisper, but to Mason, it was loud and clear.
" Run..mase... run."
Before Mason could even say anything, his father let go of the door, and crawlers started rushing in faster than you could blink.
"N-no no! why?!" He shouted. " Why the fuck would You do that!?"
Mason stared at his father with frustration and confusion rising in his chest.
Asking why?
why would he do such a thing?
But His father only ruffled his hair and said:
" Run mase, make it further than I did, okay? Run for the both of us. I love you, mase."
his father pushed him towards the front door - urging him to run and not look back.
So Mason ran, he ran as fast as he could, not looking back.
He could hear his father's screams, and the only thing he could do was run and try to hold back tears that were already falling down his face.
He felt scared.
He felt guilty.
But most of all, pain.
The pain of hearing his father's screams shot down his spine in waves. He didn't even know where he was running to or how long he had been running for. Hours? Minutes? He didn't know.
He ran until the screams and cries faded away - but to him, they never really left.
When he finally collapsed on the cold white and red snow, it wasn't from exhaustion. It was from frustration and grief.
And for the first time since the world ended - Mason let himself cry.
