Artbound is a story that began with the character Crayon when I created him over ten years ago. Now, I’m finally reimagining it and organizing it into a full book. I can admit back then my stories would jump all over the place.

This project is deeply personal. As an artist, it’s rooted in my love for creativity, self-expression, and storytelling. But also, it’s inspired by things I’ve seen and felt.

When I was growing up I was taught about the realities of orphaned and foster children and the struggles they have to face often alone. My parents made it a point to let me know to always treat them with compassion and dignity. Those lessons left a permanent mark on me and that truth runs deep in the heart of this story. I hope to one day have children of my own as well as adopt some children to call my own.

Crayon, the main character, reflects people I’ve known and loved. He also is made up of some of my sister’s high school stories she would tell me about art class and some of her friends there. Crayon, Color, and Paint were the first three characters and were created from her experience in high school art class.

His past, his quiet strength, and his pain are shaped by real struggles; mostly those of others I care about. He represents the weight of unseen battles that take place in even the youngest of us and how those battles should be taken seriously.

The world around us is built up of perceptions, we see things from our perspective and through our own pain. But we should never let our own perception and pain blind us from the pain of others.

Artbound is a story about healing, growing, and finding color again when life feels gray. It’s about art, the people behind it, the broken pieces they carry, and the ways they try to piece themselves back together.
