Prologue
The Allistair family has always been a regal, classy, and sophisticated family. A household where people respected us because of our history and prominent magic.
But, like every family we were never perfect. We also have our own set of flaws and weaknesses. In this family, I was the flaw – the only no magic child. I was born with no magic, powerless, and a weakling. But, my family thinks otherwise.
My favorite part of Allistair House is that we have a large landscape to ourselves, away from the outsiders and when the sun rises, the Allistair house shines brightly, casting a fiery glow that looks like our house is on fire.
“Verena!” I felt my body shaking harshly, and suddenly I heard a loud banging and glass shattered outside the room. My sister dragged me out of the bed and went inside the closet. Facing my sister, she put her index finger in her mouth signalling me to be quiet.
The closet room is cloaked in darkness, the only light seeping through are the tiny gaps around the door as the moon shines brightly. Our heartbeats echoed loudly in the suffocating silence, and the air felt heavy with tension, making it hard for me to draw a breath. My sister and I huddled close together, our bodies trembling with fear.
“Verena, calm down,” my sister whispered, shaking me lightly to keep me grounded. We pressed our backs against the closet walls, trying to silence our breaths as we shut our eyes tight, hoping against hope that this nightmare would pass us by.
But then, the doorknob rattled violently, my heart raced with fear and I hugged my sister tight. In an instant, the door burst open with force, revealing the shadowy outline of a man standing in the doorway.
“Oh, where are you guys? Are you here? let’s go and play, huh?” His eerie voice sliced through the air, sending shivers down to my spine. We pressed closer together, desperately trying to shut our whimpers as the stranger’s presence loomed ominously near the closet door.
Without warning, the closet door swung open fully, revealing the stranger’s figure. “There you guys are,” he said with a twisted grin, his hand reaching out to yank both of us harshly from our hiding spot. As we were pulled into the open, the darkness of the closet faded, replaced by reality.
We reacted, scrambling and grappling with all our power against the intruder who had barged into our home, each movement fueled by fear and an urge to survive. In a desperate surge of adrenaline, we managed to break free from the stranger’s grasp, but just as hope flickered, he seized my sister.
“Serena!” I shouted in horror, my heart racing as I kicked the intruder hard in the shin.
Yet despite our frantic efforts, our combined strength was no match for him. After all, we were just kids facing a grown man, and with every passing second, it became painfully clear that we have low chances of winning.
“Verena! Run! I can do this, get help!” She said and fought the intruder, that was her last words before I sprinted and jumped outside the grounds and fell on my knees. Adrenaline surged through me as I fell and my heart raced fast.
Serena is an incredible fighter, she was trained since we were young. I sprinted with all my strength, the pebbled road rough beneath my feet. My only goal was to reach the nearby town and get help. But, I tripped on a vine making me fall and tumbled hard, crashing into the ground.
A blazing bright orange and red flames danced wildly around a familiar house, casting an eerie glow against the night sky. Smoke blew up, swirling like dark shadows as the heat radiated.
For a moment, the wind was knocked out of me. Panic surged through me as I scrambled to get myself up. A glimpse. A glimpse of the future flashed before my eyes. My magic!
I looked back, my heart racing, and sprinted toward the house, desperate to change what was unfolding. Suddenly, a loud explosion erupted, shattering the night, and I turned just in time to see flames engulfing the familiar structure. The Allistair house went into flames.
