Prologue - Red Lakes In Lauri

"What if life is nothing more than a series of unfair choices, a cruel game where the rules are written in blood? What if the monsters we fear are not lurking in the shadows, but are instead hidden within us? Greed, Lust, Pride, Wrath, Sloth, Envy, and even Gluttony. Always watch who your allies are."

Chizumieko pointed toward the lake, her eyes gleaming with a mixture of excitement and mischief. "Look! The Red Lake! It actually exists!" The vibrant colors of the water captivated her, drawing her closer as though it held secrets waiting to be unveiled. "And if it's true, we might even find a demon roaming around it! Just think of it! If we bring back a demon's head, we'll be promoted to the main guild, no more saving cats from trees. We can have adventures like this forever!"

Celine shot her a sideways glance, a teasing smile playing on her lips. "Sure, but it'll probably eat you first, Chio. You're the strongest among us."

Bernadette chuckled softly, her dark blue hair catching the light. "A strong target is a tempting one, though. Just make sure it doesn't catch you off guard!"

"Yeah, Chio! We wouldn't want to lose our fearless Co leader to a hungry demon," chimed in Marcus, a boy with tousled brown hair and a mischievous grin.

"Fearless? You all just want to see me get eaten! I know it!" Chizumieko laughed, her playful tone easing the tension in the air.

As they approached the edge of the lake, Celine knelt down, her fingers brushing against the surface of the water. "It feels warm," she remarked, her brow furrowing as she examined it. "And sticky... Ew, now that I think about it, it smells like blood."

Chizumieko's grin dropped as concern spread over her face. "The whole lake? Are you saying it's filled with blood?"

Chizumieko, standing behind everyone, wore a sly grin. "I have to go pee. Be right back!"

"Do you want me to go with you? Just in case a demon shows up?" Marcus offered his voice a blend of bravado and concern.

Chizumieko rolled her eyes. "If you're not going to sacrifice yourself to hold it off while I run, then just stay with the group until I get back." With that, she skipped off into the bushes, leaving the rest of them to chat.

The group continued to banter, waiting for her to come back before making any moves, one of them began to wander closer to the lake's edge. Suddenly, without warning, gnarled tree roots shot up from the ground, ensnaring her and dragging them into the lake with a terrifying swiftness.

"Celine! Someone! Help me!" shouted Ava with tears in her eyes, as she struggled to stay afloat as she fought against unseen forces pulling her under.

"Hold on!" Celine shouted, her heart racing. But as she moved closer, she saw Ava disappear beneath the surface, swallowed by the lake's depths. Panic tightened around Celine's chest, and she stumbled back, her mind racing with dread.

"Celine, we need to go now!" yelled Marcus, his voice laced with urgency. "This place is...well! We can't stay here!"

Celine shook her head, trying to focus.

"I can't just leave Ava! I have to do something so I can lift it! I'll try!" Celine shouted, her palm glowing a faint purple as she concentrated on the water.

"Just a bucket's worth at a time isn't enough!" Marcus urged, desperation lacing his voice. "You have to try harder and hey I'm not opposed to running!"

"I've never lifted anything this big before!" Celine replied, her breath coming in quick gasps as she strained against the weight of the lake. She could feel her strength waning, and in a fleeting moment, she glanced around. The yelling, the voices echoing around her, but when she turned back, silence enveloped her.

"Marcus, Bernadette?!" Celine called out, her heart sinking as dread washed over her. She looked again, frantically searching for her friend, but the horror of absence pressed in around her.

With a final surge of effort, she attempted to lift more of the bloodied water, but her energy slipped away like sand through her fingers. The world around her began to darken, and she fell back, gasping for breath, panic clawing at her throat.

Celine staggered to her feet, her heart pounding in her chest. "Something's controlling the tree roots!" She thought as she sprinted towards the mountain.

Using her gravity magic to float herself onto the mountain, in doing so she found a moment of solace to catch her breath. Chizumieko appeared from the bushes.

The air around her shimmered with an unsettling energy, and Celine could only watch as she approached the lake with a haunting smile on her face.

"I caught a good load of lives today so i guess i don't owe you anymore," Chizumieko said, her voice light, almost sing-song. "But you took one life too many Vash."

"Chio, what-" Celine whispered, her voice trembling with confusion as she watched.

Before she could get an answer, a figure emerged from the treeline, a tall man with two long horns protruding from his forehead, a demon.

"I don't understand why it matters how many die," Vash said, his voice calm but icy, radiating an aura of authority.

Chizumieko stepped forward, her expression unwavering.

"Not everyone deserves to die a few yes but Marcus and Ava planned to kill us for a bigger cut of money had they found a demon," she replied, dragging one of the bodies from the lake. With a gentle hand, she stroked Bernadette's hair, her voice soft yet firm. "The innocent are always condemned to suffer. Life is truly unfair."

Vash regarded her with a mixture of curiosity and disdain.

"You sound awfully human right now," he stated simply, his tone devoid of empathy.

Chizumieko paused, a smile bending her lips as she turned to leave.

"Human? You're mistaken I'm enjoying myself, The complexity of human emotions is so interesting they even called me "friend" their nothing but pawns to me," she called over her shoulder, her voice carrying through the clearing. Celine sat on the mountain, watching silently as she walked away
