Lorem ipsum(/ˌlɔː.rəmˈɪp.səm/LOR-əmIP-səm) is a dummy orplaceholder textcommonly used in graphic design, publishing, and web development. Its purpose is to permit a page layout to be designed, independently of thecopythat will subsequently populate it, or to demonstrate variousfontsof atypefacewithout meaningful text that could be distracting.
Lorem ipsumis typically a corrupted version ofDe finibus bonorum et malorum, a 1st-century BC text by theRomanstatesman and philosopherCicero, with words altered, added, and removed to make it nonsensical and improperLatin. The first two words are thetruncationofdolorem ipsum(“pain itself”).
Versions of theLorem ipsumtext have been used intypesettingsince the 1960s, when advertisements forLetrasettransfer sheets popularized it.[1]Lorem ipsumwas introduced to the digital world in the mid-1980s, whenAldusemployed it in graphic and word-processing templates for its desktop publishing programPageMaker. Other popularword processors, includingPagesandMicrosoft Word, have since adoptedLorem ipsum,[2]as have manyLaTeXpackages,[3][4][5]web content managers such asJoomla!andWordPress, andCSSlibraries such as Semantic UI.
