The Lone Warrior's Rage
The moon was a memory, swallowed by the inky blackness of a moonless night. In the heart of a dense forest, a man named Jegan sat hunched under the gnarled branches of an ancient tree, a lone silhouette against the endless dark. He rose, a quiet stir in the stillness, and began to walk. The forest was a world of impenetrable shadows, but here and there, bright insects with glowing bodies flitted through the air—ethereal beacons guiding his way. He followed their silent, dancing light, and as the trees thinned, an ancient, sprawling city emerged.
It was a bustling hub of commerce, a vibrant tapestry of life woven with the energy of its people. The air was thick with the chatter of merchants hawking their wares, the smoky scent of street food mingling with the metallic clang of a blacksmith's hammer. Jegan made his way through the winding streets and into a tavern, its warm, golden light a stark contrast to the darkness he had just left. The tavern owner, a gruff man with a permanent scowl, slid a wooden mug across the counter. “The usual, Jegan?” he grunted.
“No, something different,” Jegan replied, his voice a low rumble. “A 'Snake’s Tail.'”
The owner’s scowl deepened. “That’s not for the faint of heart. Costs a fortune, too.”
Jegan tossed a few coins on the bar. “A long night calls for a long drink.”
He took a long swig of the bitter, fiery liquid. The taste of rare herbs and fermented fruit burned a path down his throat, and as the heat spread through him, his mind drifted back to a distant memory.
He was in a small, remote village, deep within a different forest. A monstrous roar echoed through the air as a pack of beasts attacked the villagers. These were not ordinary creatures. They were Tigons—a ferocious blend of dragon and tiger, each one a massive force of nature, born from a dark curse placed on a king long ago. Seven feet tall with a waist as wide as two men combined, they slammed into homes, crushed villagers with a single blow, and hunted relentlessly.
In the midst of the chaos, the village's brave warriors fought back. A man named Nold single-handedly took on a Tigon. When one charged, its maw gaping, he gripped its powerful jaws with his bare hands. He roared, his veins bulging, and with a surge of impossible strength, tore its mouth in two. Another Tigon lunged from behind, but a warrior named Morin, his body glowing with a soft, protective light, intercepted it just in time. The battle was a brutal, back-and-forth dance between man and beast. Hours passed, and the human warriors began to tire. The Tigons, however, were relentless, their stamina seemingly endless.
Just as the memory reached its climax, a sudden noise from the tavern jolted Jegan back to the present. The tavern owner's voice cut through the haze of Jegan's thoughts: “There's trouble in the city. The Silver Guard is here.”
Jegan stepped outside to see six warriors dressed in gleaming silver armor, harassing the townsfolk. They were emissaries from the Dark Realm, a plane of existence ruled by power-hungry nobles who enslaved and tortured others. Jegan watched as they cornered a woman, their hands reaching for her. A cold, familiar rage settled over him. His memories of the Tigons and the loss of his village fueled a fire in his veins. He began to walk toward them, his movements slow and deliberate.
“Who are you, old man?” one of the Silver Guard demanded, his voice dripping with condescending power.
Jegan didn't answer right away. He calmly took off his jacket, revealing a torso that was a map of old scars. On the back of his neck, a tattoo of a skull surrounded by golden coins was visible, its meaning known only to him. He strode forward, coming to a stop directly in front of the warriors.
One of them lunged, a blur of silver, but Jegan was faster. He landed a single, powerful punch to the warrior's stomach. The silver armor shattered like fragile glass, and the man's midsection burst open. He crumpled to the ground, dead before his body hit the pavement. The remaining warriors attacked, but Jegan was a whirlwind of controlled violence, fighting with his bare hands. He moved with a brutal, precise grace, grabbing one warrior's head and slamming it into the ground, crushing it like a ripe fruit. The bodies of the fallen lay in scattered, broken pieces. Only one warrior remained alive, trembling on his knees.
Jegan glared down at the sole survivor. “Tell your masters that I am coming,” he declared, his voice low and cold. “I am coming to the Dark Realm, and I will kill each and every one of you.” With his message delivered, he turned and walked away.
Leaving the ancient city behind, Jegan re-entered the forest. He walked for several hours, the first rays of the rising sun piercing through the canopy. He eventually arrived at a new village—a farming community where people possessed supernatural abilities, using their powers to tend to the land. They were a collective of nature mages, their powers flowing from the earth itself. It was a true paradise, a place of peace and quiet power.
He entered a small hut, where an old woman was sitting. Her eyes, ancient and knowing, met his. “You have killed those Silver Warriors,” she stated, her voice calm and steady.
“I couldn’t control my anger,” Jegan replied, the lie tasting bitter on his tongue.
The woman sighed, her expression softening. “You may not have sought this, but you have started a war. Those warriors are the Silver Guard of the Dark Realm, and the moment you touched one of them, the war began.”
“A war?” Jegan scoffed. “If it comes, I will face it alone.”
“There is no such thing as a lone warrior in this world, child,” she said softly. “Not when there is so much at stake.” And with that, he left.
As he departed, a group of children emerged from the hut. “Grandma, who was he?” they asked, their eyes wide with a mix of fear and curiosity.
The old woman smiled faintly. “He is a lone warrior,” she said, and as the children begged for more details, she began to tell his story.
