The desert night was never silent.
Wind whispered against the stone walls, carrying with it the scent of spices and dust. Ranya pulled her shawl tighter around her shoulders as she stepped onto the rooftop. From here, the city glittered like scattered stars, but her heart felt heavier than the endless sand beyond.
She hadn’t meant to wander so far from her room, but sleep refused to come. Tomorrow marked three months since she had left home, and not a single day had passed without the ache of missing everything familiar.
A sound startled her — the scrape of boots on stone.
Her breath caught. She wasn’t alone.
From the shadows emerged a man. Tall, broad-shouldered, his eyes burning like embers even in the dark. He froze when he saw her, as if he hadn’t expected anyone to be here either.
“I didn’t mean to frighten you,” he said, voice deep and low, carrying an accent she couldn’t place.
Ranya swallowed, her pulse racing. Something about him radiated danger… and yet, something else — something she couldn’t name — pulled her closer instead of pushing her away.
“Who are you?” she whispered.
His lips curved into a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“Someone who doesn’t belong here… just like you.”
