Chapter 1 – The Stranger in the Shadows
Anaya never believed in the feeling of being watched. Yet tonight, as she walked down the dimly lit street after her late-night class, the silence carried a weight that pressed against her chest.
Her heels clicked against the pavement, echoing too loudly in the emptiness. Every step felt followed, every shadow seemed alive. She tightened her grip on her bag and whispered to herself, “It’s just my imagination.”
But then she heard it—
A slow, deliberate footstep behind her.
Her breath caught. She didn’t dare turn around, only quickened her pace. The night air was cold, but a strange heat crawled across her skin, the way prey must feel under a predator’s gaze.
At the corner, she finally stopped and spun around.
Nothing. Just the empty road, the flickering streetlight, and the silence of the city.
Relief began to wash over her—until a voice, deep and unsettling, curled through the night.
“You shouldn’t walk alone at night, Anaya.”
Her heart stopped.
How did he know her name?
From the darkness beyond the lamppost, a tall figure stepped forward. His face was half-hidden, his eyes gleaming with something she couldn’t name—danger, desire, or both.
She stumbled back, her voice trembling. “W-Who are you?”
The man smirked, his presence overwhelming even in the stillness.
“Someone who has been waiting for you… far longer than you realize.”
Before she could react, a gust of wind blew, and in that fleeting second, he was gone—
leaving only the echo of his words and the chilling certainty that her life was no longer her own.
