Chapter 1- THE INTERVIEW
Maya Daniels adjusted the collar of her blouse for the third time as she stood outside the towering glass building of Cole Enterprises. The skyscraper gleamed against the morning sun, daring her to step inside. For weeks, she had been chasing job after job, and every rejection chipped at her confidence. But this, this felt different. Cole Enterprises wasn’t just any company. It was the company, the one people whispered about with a mix of envy and admiration. Landing a position here could change everything.
She smoothed her skirt and whispered to herself, You’ve got this. Just breathe.
The receptionist greeted her with a polished smile as she entered the lobby. “Good morning. Name, please?”
“Maya Daniels. I’m here for the assistant interview.”
The receptionist nodded, typing quickly before giving her a visitor’s pass. “Take the elevator to the 32nd floor. Mr. Cole will see you shortly.”
Maya’s heart skipped. Mr. Cole? She had assumed the HR manager or some mid-level executive would handle the interview. But the CEO himself? She swallowed hard, her palms suddenly clammy.
The elevator ride felt endless. Each ding of a passing floor made her pulse race. By the time the doors opened to a sleek, modern office with floor-to-ceiling windows, her nerves were ready to snap.
“Miss Daniels?” A deep, commanding voice pulled her attention.
And there he was. Adrian Cole.
He was taller than she expected, with a presence that filled the room. His suit was tailored to perfection, dark against his broad frame, and his eyes, sharp, piercing gray, locked onto her as if he could see through every nervous thought running in her head.
“Yes… sir,” Maya managed, her voice unsteady.
“Have a seat.” His tone was calm, controlled, yet there was something about it that made her pulse race faster.
She sat across from him, clutching her portfolio like a lifeline. Adrian leaned back in his chair, studying her in silence for a long moment. It wasn’t the casual glance of an interviewer. No, this felt heavier, as though he were weighing something far beyond her résumé.
“Tell me, Miss Daniels,” he said finally, “why do you want to work here?”
Maya blinked, pulling herself back into focus. “Because I admire the company’s reputation, sir. Cole Enterprises represents excellence, and I believe I can contribute meaningfully here. I may not have the most experience, but I learn fast, and I don’t back down from challenges.”
Adrian’s lips curved slightly, not quite a smile, more like amusement flickering at the edges. “Confident. That’s good. But confidence without substance is useless. What makes you think you can keep up in an environment where failure isn’t tolerated?”
His eyes bore into her, daring her to falter. Instead, Maya straightened her shoulders. “Because I’ve failed before. And I learned from it. I know how to get back up. I don’t scare easily, Mr. Cole.”
For the first time, Adrian’s expression softened, just a fraction. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. The air between them seemed to thicken, pulling at her in ways she couldn’t explain.
“Interesting answer,” he murmured. “Most people just recite rehearsed lines. You… don’t.”
Maya’s breath caught, but she refused to look away. His gaze was too intense, too consuming, yet some part of her wanted to hold it, to prove she wasn’t intimidated.
After what felt like an eternity, he leaned back again. “The position is demanding. You’ll be expected to work late, handle pressure, and keep your composure under scrutiny. Still want it?”
“Yes,” she said without hesitation.
Another flicker of amusement in his eyes. He stood, walking around the desk until he was beside her. Maya’s pulse thundered as he extended his hand.
“Welcome to Cole Enterprises, Miss Daniels.”
Her fingers trembled slightly as she shook his hand. His grip was firm, warm, almost lingering. When he finally released her, Maya had to remind herself how to breathe.
As she left the office, one thought replayed in her mind: What just happened in there?
It wasn’t just an interview. It was something else. A pull. A spark. Something she wasn’t sure she was ready for.
But deep down, she knew one thing, Adrian Cole was going to change her life in ways she couldn’t yet imagine.
