Werewolf story. Lots of poetic imagery and metaphors.
"This is a story that I wanted to love. A wolf who met her mate when his pack invaded her home and killed her family - drawn to him and hating him in equal measure. A plot with great dramatic potential. But unfortunately (in my opinion) this potential was not played out. The pacing is intense. There is constant action. There are a lot of complex fantasy elements (eg heart stones and tuning forks) that are not commonly understood or simply explained. The storyline was a little difficult to follow in some places due to the number of metaphors and poetic descriptions incorporated. As examples of the writing style: “Every tree felt alive with listening” (chpt 13) “Sound is a liar if you raise it right” (chpt 16) “She taught the room to remember that it had a floor” (chpt 26) There were a couple of places I had to re-read the paragraph twice to ensure I understood. Some of the dialogue felt a little overly scripted - elegant and powerful but unnatural to the characters. As an example: A small child stands up unprompted in a court room and says “Grownups pretend paper isn’t teeth because it doesnt bleed” (chpt14) This story may find a home amongst readers who seek highbrow literary fiction. 🎥 Single perspective. Told from the perspective of the female lead. 🤬 No swearing or strong language. 🔪 Battle violence throughout - but the portrayal is not graphic. Limited references to blood and guts. 💋 No sex scenes. 🔚 No cliff hangers. But clearly invites a follow up story. "
Very confusing book
"This is not your usual plot for a werewolf story. There is so much going on that stresses the mind that it makes it hard to understand what is happening with the story. Frankly I’m not a fan of this story style. That is on me not on the author’s. I found it hard to follow what was happening at times. "
The Alpha’s Secret Mate
"An unbelievably weird book. The writing style is somewhere between riddle and poetry, very descriptive in a convoluted manner that means you have to read it rather than absorb it. It’s a very Marmite story and I’m still trying to figure out if I love it or not. I’ve a feeling that the author is cleverer and more high brow than me and my inability to understand it is my failure rather than hers. If you like your reading material to be dark, intense and complicated then this is definitely for you. It’s not your traditional werewolf story. "
Weird
"The way you describe the situations is really weird for me, it's confusing!! "
Misleading and badly written
"This is a ling winded story that never gets anywhere. Read the whole thing hoping it would get somewhere eventually. It didn’t. It deviated from all shifter story lines, which is fine if the story make sense, is good and resolves cleanly. None of that happened. Plus, exhausting with constant “action” and no respite. I wouldn’t waste time reading this. "
