Unknown Real

Unknown Real. A term created and used for a few years now. It is a feeling that you have, when you have something so new and real happen you have to think and study it to make sure it is part of your reality. It is unknown, new and it shocks you into reality.

This is the first time I have been in this situation.

My name is Spencer, actually it is Roderick Spencer but I am the only Spencer I know. I am 35 alone and trying to survive.

Some persons thought war was never an issue, that would never affect them, they of course were very wrong.

Late in 2015, the politicians of what was left of this country began hoarding wealth and destroying the poor and indigent support structures that were in place. Some folks in the military saw what was being done and created the fine world we have today. This Country was afraid of terrorism, trying to fight the outsider, trying to separate the country from the world in general.

I think it was in December right around Christmas. A missile was launched in the Midwest targeting Washington D.C., you can imagine the results. It started a retaliatory response and the world changed. it took two days for the bombs and missiles to stop, China was a pool of lava the next day The West became a desert and the weather was changed so much we had tornadoes lasting weeks moving from one end of the country to the other.

This what I have learned from reports on radio. I had a decent laptop and some converted equipment to receive and translate Morse Code. It was depressing, and very infuriating to listen and read the reports. Then after a few weeks it all went silent. There were no broadcasts. There were no people to send them anymore. Most survivors were in shelters that hey thought would protect them, most others were to ill to care.

Let me take this story back a few months. I was a radio dj i played music and had a mediocre life. A wife and two children, I wont go into detail with them they are not a part of what I am now. I started investigating survival and saw the prepper shows and read up on what to do in the real event of a nuclear war. Having a background in the Navy and as a Corpsman I knew that survivability was possible. However slight.

My studies showed a major flaw in that ability to survive, Shelters were built for comfort and did not look at the realities of going out after. The time frame of two weeks food and water was ludicrous. The depth of the shelters was a fallacy, and there is nothing, absolutely nothing, about the traumatic psychological effects of being a survivor.

Design flaws and preparation manuals missed by a mile. minimum safe depth should be at least twenty feet. you must have an airlock system for each entrance. You must have at least six months of food for each individual, six months of water. Waste facilities that can work. Air filtration and oxygen supplies, co2 scrubbers etc...

Radiation detection, decontamination areas, weapons, and entertainment.

You will need an understanding of plants and herbs, first aid, surgery, and have a well stocked medical kit for years of care.

I did it all found a place in the Black Mountains of North Carolina, Rented an excavator from a mine. I did everything even designed the habitat interior to be self sufficient, stationary bike and electrical generating floor tiles, battery bay and fire fighting equipment.

It was lavish in design but it worked.

It worked... for me.

When the weapon detonated over D.C., news traveled fast i was in the shelter already getting ready to record some spots for a car dealership. The emergency services radio went off, it was calm and prerecorded. D.C. was gone go get safe wait for instructions.

My wife was at our home a few miles away the kids at her mothers a few more miles away. There was no time for them to get here.

They were gone in ten minutes.

The computer started a furious news report from a location I did not know about.

The report was this.

"I did this. I am done with bad news. I am done with the poor being destroyed. I am done with politicians. We are all done. I did this. I destroyed it all. No one will know who I am. No one will remember why."

It repeated a few more times. The IP address was in Olathe Kansas. The message was clear. The end of the world was started by someone that gave up on mankind.

I survived, I am surviving, I am alone.

I will go outside tomorrow...

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
