The streets were eerily quiet as Esha Roy made her way through the dimly lit alleyway. The city had a different vibe this late at night-hushed, almost sinister. It was 12:30 AM, and she had just wrapped up another long day of investigation. The cold air bit at her skin, and she pulled her coat tighter around her, eager to get home and rest.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, the sudden vibration startling her in the silence. She fished it out, glancing at the screen-Rajโ€™s name flashed across it. Frowning, she answered the call.

โ€œRaj, itโ€™s late,โ€ she said, her voice tinged with fatigue. โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

โ€œEsha, where are you?โ€ Rajโ€™s voice was frantic, laced with urgency.

โ€œIโ€™m on my way home. Why?โ€ Eshaโ€™s heart rate picked up, sensing the tension in his tone.

โ€œEsha, listen to me very carefully,โ€ Raj said, his voice dropping to a whisper, making it all the more unsettling. โ€œYouโ€™re the next target.โ€

Esha froze in her tracks, her blood running cold. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œThe serial killer weโ€™ve been tracking... heโ€™s after you. We just received intel, and itโ€™s confirmed. Where exactly are you?โ€

But before Esha could answer, she felt a sharp, searing pain at the back of her head. The world tilted, her vision blurring as she stumbled forward, dropping her phone. The cold, hard pavement rushed up to meet her as she collapsed to the ground, the sound of Rajโ€™s voice fading into the background.

โ€œEsha? Esha, are you there?!โ€ Rajโ€™s voice echoed from the phone lying a few feet away, but she couldnโ€™t move, couldnโ€™t respond.

As her consciousness began to slip away, she heard the sound of footsteps approaching, slow and deliberate. A shadow loomed over her, and then a voice-smooth, familiar, and dripping with malice-cut through the haze.

โ€œNice to meet you again, darling.โ€

Eshaโ€™s heart pounded in her chest, but her body wouldnโ€™t respond. Her vision darkened completely, and the last thing she felt was a pair of hands gripping her shoulders before everything went black.

The phone screen dimmed as Rajโ€™s voice echoed faintly into the night, โ€œEsha...?โ€

And then, there was nothing but silence.

W_Skye: The secret-identity premise has real hooks, and the pacing kept me turning chapters (too quickly). What I'd have loved most is more depth in the prose itself, more scenes, more sensory grounding, a bit less telling me what's at stake and a bit more letting me feel it.
