Scene

Rage.

It boiled up in me, and I charged at the man who had just murdered my friend.

He then pointed his gun at me and said, “I don’t really wanna kill you too, and so if you’d kindly just stop right there then I won’t have to shoot you.” but I continued running despite the warning and frankly didn’t even care if I got shot.

And so he shot the gun at me, but I ducked out of the way just before the shot went off, and then I managed to reach him before he had managed to get another shot off.

Reaching him meant tackling him straight to the ground, and a shot actually did go off as I tackled him, but the shot somehow hit him because my tackle had shifted where his hand was pointing the gun.

I had been hoping to be able to question him about the murder of my friend Emry, but the bullet from his own gun had been fatal and thus meant that questioning him wouldn’t be a thing that I could do now.

Then a police officer suddenly! showed up, and he said, “Hands in the air, lady! You’re under arrest for murder!” and I realized that this scene looked to him like I had been the murderer.

And I also didn’t think that any cameras had caught the whole thing, and so it might be hard to prove what had actually happened to anybody.

At this point, I wanted to flee, but fleeing seemed too risky; and so I just put my hands up in the air and said, “This guy just killed Emry, and then when I charged at this guy he accidentally shot himself.

And so I’m innocent.” and then the officer said, “That’s not how this works.

You don’t decide guilt, I do.

And so you’re going to jail.” and I said, “I understand why you think I did it, but I didn’t do it, okay?” and then the officer said, “I can’t just let you remain out here on the streets because you claim to be innocent.

People want the streets safe, and if you wanted to live somewhere where there’s a trial and jury and all that then you should’ve moved to a place where that exists, but around here the police officers get to make the calls; and I have been very firm in promising to put safety above supposed freedom, and so I can’t let you go free if I think that you might be a threat to public safety.”

“But isn’t everyone a potential threat to public safety by that standard?” I asked; and the police officer said, “Nice strawman, but locking everyone up would be obvious overkill, and so it’s only in situations where I have a reason other than the general potential of everyone that I’m going to be locking someone up.

Most people don’t have 2 dead bodies near them when I see them, and so I have reason other than the general potential of everyone to lock you up.”

“I suppose maybe I did make a mistake by not moving to a place where there are juries and whatnot…” I grumbled; and the police officer said, “Maybe; though I do think that a jury would probably convict you in a situation like this.

I mean, 2 dead bodies and 1 live body doesn’t usually indicate that the live body is particularly innocent, ya know?” and then the officer went over to me, handcuffed me, and took me over to a jail cell.

“There we go!” he said as he locked the door, “This is your new home, lady!…

And what’s your name, by the way?…” and I said, “Ember. My name is Ember.” and he said, “Very good, Ember!

Welcome to jail! Where you’ll be safe from others, and others will be safe from you!

I’ll seeya later!” and then he turned around and exited the building so that there was now nobody near me to talk to besides myself…

And so now I was left to process what had just happened.

Emry and I had just been walking along, and then the killer had murdered Emry.

And then I had managed to avenge Emry.

And then I had been put in jail because the police officer thought that it was too risky to have me out and about because from his perspective I had probably committed murder.

And so now I needed to break out of this jail cell, but that was probably going to be very difficult.

And it also wasn’t particularly easy for me to deal with the fact that my friend Emry had just been murdered.

And why in the hell had the murderer killed Emry?…

But I supposed that it would probably be impossible to figure out the why of the murderer, since the murderer was dead now.

I wondered if maybe the murderer had been an assassin…

I mean, that would explain why the murderer hadn’t really been too keen on killing me, right?…

And so that meant that if there was someone who had hired the person to murder Emry then maybe I could somehow expose that person and prove my innocence?…

But how would I do that from inside of this jail cell?…

Ummm…

That would probably be where having visitors could work to my advantage…

Or maybe I could even convince the tyrannical police officer to try n’ figure out if someone had paid the murderer to kill Emry?…

Hard to say…

But it was possible that someone had paid the murderer to kill Emry, and so it did seem like this was something that I should try to get others to help me investigate…
