Chapter 1

The night of the Binding had arrived, and the Jeon estate buzzed with quiet, restrained energy. Hidden behind the grandeur of its golden gates and high stone walls, centuries of tradition pressed down like an invisible weight. For outsiders, the ritual was myth, a hushed legend about two powerful families whose bloodlines intertwined through fate rather than choice. But for those born into the Jeons and Kims, there was no myth—only duty.

Jeon Jungkook stood before the tall mirrors in his chambers, adjusting the dark ceremonial robe that clung to his broad shoulders. At twenty-one, he had officially reached the age where tradition demanded his submission to the ancient pact. His reflection revealed a young man hardened by years of discipline—raven hair that framed his sharp jaw, eyes that carried both fire and reluctance. He knew tonight he would meet his bound mate. Whether he wanted it or not.

He exhaled slowly, trying to steady his heart. A Jeon never faltered. That was drilled into him since birth. Yet, despite all the lessons, despite the honor attached to this night, Jungkook could not ignore the truth clawing at him—his life was about to be tied to a stranger’s, perhaps forever.

Across the estate, in a smaller but equally grand chamber, Kim Lisa sat on the edge of her bed, hands clenched together so tightly her knuckles whitened. At eighteen, she had been raised on whispers of this very night. Unlike the Jeons, the Kims were known for their softness, their light, their energy that complemented the Jeons’ strength. Yet, for Lisa, the whispers had always sounded more like warnings.

“When you are bound,” her grandmother used to say, “your life will not be your own. Your strength will belong to him. But if he cherishes you, you will flourish. If not…”

The unspoken end hung in the air like a noose. Lisa shivered, remembering the tragic stories of young Kims who had withered into shadows of themselves when their Jeon mates neglected them.

Her gown, pale as moonlight, flowed around her ankles as the attendants entered. Without a word, they tied the silken blindfold over her eyes and gently pushed the earplugs in place. Darkness swallowed her world. Silence followed. Her heart raced.

On the other side of the hall, Jungkook experienced the same stripping away of senses. The blindfold covered his eyes, the earplugs muffled all sound. He was left in a void of blackness and dull thuds of his own heartbeat. Strangely, he found himself grateful for it. He wouldn’t have to see the faces of the others. Wouldn’t have to hear the whispering voices waiting to judge. All that would matter was fate’s pull.

The ritual grounds lay beneath the estate, in a vast stone chamber lit only by torches and the eerie glow of carved runes. The air was thick with incense, the scent sharp and sweet, clinging to the back of the throat. Attendants guided both Jeons and Kims through winding passages until finally, they were released into the ritual space—each blind, each deaf, each forced to rely on instinct.

The Binding was not a selection. It was destiny. Somehow, through the unseen force that tied their bloodlines, a Jeon and Kim would find one another. Hands would touch. Fate would decide.

Jungkook moved slowly, his steps echoing faintly against stone. His hands extended before him, searching. His breath came in shallow bursts, every nerve heightened. Somewhere in this darkness was his mate, the one who would carry his strength, the one who could either make him whole or chain him for life.

Lisa stumbled forward, her body trembling. Every step felt heavier, as though the ritual itself drained her even before it began. Her fingertips brushed against rough stone, then empty air, then—

A hand.

Warm. Solid. Alive.

Jungkook froze as soon as he felt it—the feather-light touch of small, trembling fingers against his palm. His chest tightened. Without hesitation, he closed his hand over hers, firm but careful, as though afraid she might vanish. Electricity shot through his veins, hot and demanding, while at the same time, something fragile pulled at him.

Lisa gasped under the blindfold. The moment his skin touched hers, it was as if her energy spilled outward, siphoned into him. Her knees buckled, and she leaned forward unconsciously, desperate for support. Jungkook’s other hand instinctively caught hers, locking them together completely.

The chanting began.

Low, guttural voices filled the chamber. Though muted by the earplugs, the vibration was enough to shake Lisa’s core. The ground pulsed beneath them, and the runes on the floor flared with light.

Jungkook felt his strength rising—an intoxicating, almost overwhelming surge. His chest swelled with power, muscles tightening as though forged anew. But with every ounce he gained, he felt the weight of her body grow heavier in his arms. Her energy poured into him, unrelenting, leaving her fragile, vulnerable.

“No,” he thought fiercely, tightening his hold on her hands. “Don’t break.”

Lisa struggled to stay upright. The darkness, the silence, the burning ache spreading through her body—it was too much. She swayed, nearly falling, but Jungkook pulled her against his chest before she could collapse. Even blindfolded, he knew she was small, fragile, trembling against him. His heart clenched.

When the chanting ceased, silence flooded the chamber. The Binding was complete.

The attendants approached, removing blindfolds and earplugs.

Light pierced Jungkook’s vision. He blinked rapidly until the blur sharpened into the sight of the girl in his arms. Pale-skinned, eyes wide and shimmering like unshed tears, lips parted as she tried to breathe through exhaustion—Kim Lisa.

His bound mate.

For a moment, he said nothing. He only looked at her, memorizing the way her hair framed her delicate face, the way she clung to him instinctively as though he were her only anchor. His chest burned with something unfamiliar, protective.

Lisa lifted her gaze weakly to meet his. Their eyes locked.

“You’re mine now,” Jungkook whispered, voice rough, the words more a vow than a statement.

Her lips trembled. She didn’t answer. But even as her knees threatened to give way again, she didn’t let go of his hands.

And in that silence, surrounded by ancient fire and shadows, the Jeon heir and the Kim daughter stood bound—not just by tradition, but by the dangerous, fragile thread of fate.
