Chapter 1: Sanctuary
The autumn air, crisp and golden, carried the scent of dry earth and dying leaves. Two children, a boy and a girl, lay hidden in a field of towering, dry corn stalks. Sunlight filtered through the stalks, creating a latticework of light and shadow on their faces. Julian’s heart thumped with excitement, both from the thrill of hiding and the simple joy of being with Lena, his closest friend.
“Lena,” Julian whispered, his voice a rustle against the corn. “Are they gone?”
He watched her small face, lit with mischief, and felt a rush of relief. Lena always seemed braver than him, and somehow he found courage just by being near her.
Lena giggled and put a finger to her lips. “Be quiet, or they’ll find us.”
Julian bit back a laugh, feeling the tension of hiding melt away. Their game—“Escape the House”—was their little rebellion against the loud voices and anger that came from their homes. In this secret field, they were free. Safe. Together.
“Do you think we can live out here?” Julian asked, his small voice full of hope.
Lena nodded, plucking a loose kernel from a cob and rolling it between her fingers. “Yeah. It’s better than being inside. We can build a house out of sticks, and…” She trailed off, looking at him. “We can stay here forever.”
Julian smiled. The idea made him feel light and happy—no rules, no shouting, just endless afternoons in the cornfield with his best friend.
She reached out and took his hand, her small fingers curling around his. “I would like that very much.”
Julian squeezed her hand back, thinking only that he liked being close to her, liked that they had this secret place, and liked that she trusted him. Nothing more—just friendship, comfort, and the quiet joy of being together.
As the sun dipped lower, casting longer shadows over the field, Julian felt a quiet happiness, simple and full. A place like this, with Lena by his side, made him feel safe from everything else. He didn’t think about the future, only that today, here, everything was perfect.
