Chapter 1- The Beginning
Today, the Author will not tell you a story.
No, today the Author will open a door — a door into the private life of a man who was both scientist and seeker, both builder and breaker of worlds.
This is not the diary of the scientist you think you know.
This is the diary of Dr. Martinez — colleague, friend, and at times reluctant witness to the very edges of human experience. His words were never meant for us, never meant for the world to read. And yet, here they are, preserved like pressed flowers between the pages of time, waiting for a reader brave enough to look.
In this chapter of his life, you will see how love — that most celebrated of forces — is a double-edged sword. How it can mend and shatter, redeem and ruin. You will see it drive men to hope and to madness, to mercy and to violence.
These are not just the notes of a scientist. They are confessions, pleadings, sometimes accusations hurled at the universe itself. They smell of ink and fear and longing.
So turn the page carefully.
Step inside his lab, feel the rain on the London windows, and listen.
For tonight, Martinez speaks.

Location: N.M. Research Lab, London
Amidst today’s strange events, I find myself writing from my desk at the laboratory — and perhaps I will remain here through the night. There is no telling whether I shall even return home before dawn, for what transpired this evening has left me in a state of disquiet I can neither escape nor fully comprehend.
Mark — my colleague, my brother in all but blood — burst through my door in the thick of London’s relentless rain. I have seen him elated, weary, and angry on occasion, but never before have I seen fear in his face. Not just fear — something deeper, something that verged on the primal helplessness of a man watching the earth open beneath his feet.
Mark, only twenty-five and newly married, had set out with his wife Anna on what was meant to be a modest honeymoon. They had kept their destination secret, promising to surprise us with photographs upon their return. But what he brought back today was anything but photographs.
He stood in my office, soaked and shivering, unable to form words until my assistant fetched him dry clothes and coffee. And then, in a voice not entirely his own, the first words he managed to speak were:
“M-Martinez… she’s gone. I–I couldn’t save her. I tried.”
I needed no clarification. He spoke, of course, of Anna. I know her well — a tireless worker for UNICEF, devoted to the welfare of children in the world’s most forgotten corners.
Mark’s voice steadied as he went on, though his hands still trembled. Anna, he said, had once told him of a place recorded in her work — a remote settlement at the far reaches of the Andes, where children are born without eyes. Not blind, not disfigured — simply eyeless, their faces marked only by black, depthless hollows. The phenomenon haunted her, and it was there she wished to go, to see for herself.
Mark stared into my eyes then, the last of his words barely more than a whisper.
“Will you help me find her, Martinez? Will you, please?”
And so I sit here, awaiting my fiancée, who is gathering my equipment and essentials. We leave at first light for the Andes, and I cannot shake the sense that we are not merely traveling into mountains, but into some dread that waits for us there.
