Chapter 1 - Life in a Nutshell

The moon shone brightly, illuminating the night sky through the apartment window. It was small but comfortable. Just the way he liked it.

Sam was chillin’ at his desk, reading a book on his soon-to-be favorite subject, Greek Mythology. Ever since his power was thrust upon him, reading was one of the few things for him to stay... human.

Suddenly, police sirens were heard in the distance in the city.

Sam: *Yawns* Please be something good for once...

He quickly stands up, picks up the remote from his desk, and turns on the TV behind him to see the news.

Reporter: --reporting live! We are currently broadcasting a high-speed pursuit between the police and a van that just robbed a convenience store 5 minutes ago! Reports say that the truck is being guarded by a giant flying... bird? The police say they have no clue what’s going on, but rest assured: they're doing everything they can to take control of the situation!

Sam walks over to his closet, opens the doors, and opens a compartment in the back wall. He takes out his outfit and sword from the area and sets them on the table.

Sam: Time for a break. *He smiles*

He quickly pulls up his black pants, his blue shirt, and then his blue robe. He then straps his belt around his waist and throws on his boots. He then picks up his sword from the hilt, sheathes it, and straps it to his back.

Demi Spider: Ok... *cracks neck and opens the window. He sees the police across the river from Brooklyn* Let’s go! Oh crap... that’s taken...

He leaps out and slides down the slanted overhang. He then hops from roof to roof, across the bridge, and into the city. Luckily, he was just in time to see the van racing down the street near him.

Demi Spider: There you are! *Jumps onto a railing and slides down, just fast enough to reach the van. He grabs the bumper just in time.*

Burglar 1: What the hell was that?! Burglar 2: *Looks in the side mirror* Oh shit! It’s the guy! Floor it!

Demi gains his footing, takes out his sword, impales it into the concrete street, and manages to stop the van from moving any further. The burglars wasted no time escaping the van. Demi then stopped the van to prevent it from moving.

Demi: Now it obeys the law. *Jokingly. He sees the burglars run into an alley, so he runs to the entrance.* Come on, guys. You had a good run... literally... but the show’s over. *waves them to come out, but it’s silent* Please?

Then, a giant creature swarms out and grabs Demi by the arm with its foot.

Demi: Holy! *The creature screeches at him. He quickly pulls out his sword and cuts its leg so it’ll let go. He landed back on the street.* Bro, why are you screaming at me like that?!

Then holes began to form in the street, and some other creatures were crawling out of them. They had swords, armed and ready.

Demi: Surely we can talk this out? *They just kept growling at him*

Demi: Couldn’t disagree! *draws sword before slashing one of the creatures

He was doing well, taking them out one by one. They seemed to be mindless and dead, but they weren’t that stupid

Eventually, he delivered the final blow to the last one by cutting off its head.

Demi: Get smoked, you zombies! *Sheathes sword to back*

The creatures then dissolved back into the ground. Demi was relieved but also confused as to what these things were. But he was so rudely interrupted.

Cops: Police! Drop your weapon! Demi: Whoa! Easy guys. I just made your job easier. Cops: Drop the weapon now! Demi: *sighs* No thanks! *Jumps up onto the roof of a small building and epicly parkours out of the area to get away from the police.

The police are not the bad guys, and they have a job to do, but they can’t let anyone break the law as Demi did. But he had no choice now.

Later on, Demi managed to make it back to the roof of his apartment safely. He didn’t want to enter his room just yet. All he wanted was time to think.

Demi: What a night... *lies back on the vent and looks up at the stars, remembering his situation* I want something good to happen... *sighs and shuts his eyes*

It was a hot minute before a light flashed in the sky. Demi opened his eyes to see something bright falling. A shooting star? A plane? No. It was getting closer and closer. The light passed his roof and landed on the neighboring one. Demi quickly leaped up and looked over to see smoke rising.

Demi: Man, I must be a fortune teller.

He quickly jumps over and gets closer to the object. It looks to be some device, shaped weirdly. Demi picks it up slowly to observe it.

Demi: What is this thing?

Before he could process anything, the device was activated. He dropped it and took a step back. The device started glowing brighter and brighter until a portal formed right above it.

Demi: *gasps*

He starts to feel light as he slowly gets dragged closer to the portal

Demi: Ah, hell, nah!

He attempts to hold it back, but the force is too strong. He fell to his feet and grabbed a pole to try to keep his balance, but it was no use. The portal intensified, pulling him in completely before closing.

Demi: AHHHHHHHH!

He was falling, traveling through the bright colors. Through them, he could almost see what looked like galaxies. Was he traveling through time? Space? Who knows?

Before he could realize, the colors ceased, and he fell right into a building, crashing into the floor below, covered in dust. It took him a moment to regain himself.

Demi: Ow, ow, ow.... *cracks back* What... the hell?! *He looks around to see that he is in some abandoned warehouse.* Did I... did I just time-travel? *Runs to a window and looks out*

He was in a city that was populated, and a lot of people were walking in the street, too. He looked up and saw a sign that said, “Lexcorp. Metropolis’ Best” with a bald guy at the corner of it.

The moment struck Demi hard in the chest.

Demi: Holy CRAAAAAAAAAP!
