Chapter 1 - A New Concern

NOTE: This is book 15 in the “My Mafia Madness” series. Please make sure you read books 1 - 14 before beginning this one. This will be the final book in the series!

Alexa was lying there, rubbing her eyes and groaning in obvious discomfort after having woken up from her weeklong coma.

“Holy shit…” Nicola muttered in disbelief.

He quickly pulled himself up onto his feet and crossed the room, shaking Dante awake again.

Dante frowned, glancing up at his second in question.

“Nicola, what are you doing?” the Don asked.

Capo…” Nicola muttered, pointing over at Alexa.

“She’s… she’s awake.”

Dante immediately turned around and looked up at Alexa and just as Nicola had said, Alexa’s eyes were open, and she was scanning the room around her in question.

Bella…” Dante spoke as he pulled himself up to stand and made his way over towards her, stopping by the side of her bed.

Bella, you’re awake. I was so worried.” he admitted with a smile.

“What’s going on?” Alexa asked, still appearing confused.

“Where am I?”

“It’s alright, you’re at the hospital.” Dante explained calmly, still smiling brightly after seeing her come out of her coma at long last.

“And your surgery went well, don’t worry. Everything’s alright.”

“Surgery? What are you talking about?” Alexa asked, frowning.

“You were shot.” Dante explained.

He was suddenly starting to realise that his wife didn’t seem to recall what had happened, which he thought was somewhat strange.

“Shot? What are you talking about?” she asked.

“How did I get shot? I’ve never seen a gun in my life. And who are you anyway?”

Dante’s heart immediately plummeted as soon as she asked him this question.

“Do you work here or something?” she asked.

His eyes were wide, and he stood there stunned, with a pained expression now upon his face.

Suddenly the doctor came rushing into the suite along with Nicola and several nurses.

With tears filling his eyes, Dante took several steps back from Alexa as she eyed him with concern, having no clue whatsoever as to who he was.

And that was the moment when it all sank in for him.

Alexa had lost her memory.

“But I don’t understand, are you saying she has no memory at all of what happened?” Nicola questioned the doctor as he, Dante, Becky and the doctor sat there in the lounging area of the suite while Alexa was being seen to by several nurses across the room.

“Unfortunately, no.” the doctor replied.

“It seems that the injury to her head must have caused a mild case of amnesia. From what I can gather from the questions we’ve asked her, Mrs. Romano doesn’t recall anything from at least the past few years, if not more. When we asked, she said the last thing she recalled was that she lived with a…”

He paused, checking his notes for a second.

“…a Ms. Willow Coulton and worked at Romano Enterprises as a personal assistant to a Mr. Gary Harworth.” the doctor finished.

Dante knew it; Alexa had forgotten everything about them, about what they had been through together for the past couple of years.

Somehow, in the universe’s cruel twist of fate, she had forgotten about everything that they had built together.

All the memories, the experiences, everything.

Including their children!

Was this the universe’s way of punishing him for all the wrongdoings in his life?

His eyes welled again, and he blinked the tears away sniffing.

As he did this, Alexa glanced over and noticed him getting emotional, but wondered why a complete stranger, albeit, a handsome stranger, would get so emotional about her.

It made no sense.

She didn’t even know this guy.

“Now, it’s ultimately your decision, as you are her husband. But may I suggest we keep her here for at least the next month-” the doctor began, but Dante lifted his hand and sat upright as he spoke.

“-Sorry, doctor, but I have my own medical team for these sorts of matters. They’re fully qualified to take care of her and I’m sure they can accommodate anything she might need.” Dante explained.

“I’d also like to organise her discharge and transport back home as soon as possible.”

Alexa sat there confused.

Did she just hear the doctor call the handsome stranger her husband?

What in the actual fuck?

Since when was she married to Mr. handsome?

The doctor sighed.

“Very well. It is ultimately your decision. But I will warn you, be mindful of the fact that she has no memories when you do reintroduce her to her old lifestyle. You wouldn’t want to further traumatise her.” he explained.

“Just how long are we expecting this amnesia to last, doctor?” Becky enquired from where he sat.

The doctor shrugged as he spoke, shaking his head.

“Honestly, I couldn’t tell you. It could be anything between days, weeks or months. Worst case scenario, years.” he replied.

Dante didn’t like the sound of that as he listened in silence.

He then turned and glanced over at Alexa and their eyes met for a brief moment before Alexa then pulled her gaze away in embarrassment.

He found himself smirking at her stolen glance.

It was so like her.

Alexa wasn’t happy about going home with the handsome stranger at all and she argued the point with the doctors when they informed her that it would be happening.

“But this makes no sense. I don’t even know this guy, or him, or her!” Alexa argued, pointing from Dante across to Nicola and Becky as both men stood about a metre away from the bed.

“I understand, Mrs. Romano but- ” the doctor tried to explain, but she cut in over him angrily.

“-Stop calling me that! My name is Alexa Myers, not Romano.” Alexa insisted, shaking her head.

“I don’t understand what’s going on. And what about the surgery? Don’t I have to stay here for a bit after having surgery? Isn’t that how things usually work?”

The doctor sighed, clearly having trouble in convincing her to see reason.

Dante chose to step in and spoke in a calm tone to her as he approached the bed.

“Alexa, I get that you’re confused. But I can assure you that I have the very best medical teams that money can buy on call ready for you at home. You’ll be well looked after.” he explained.

She frowned.

“How do I know you’re not some kind of weird serial killer or something? I mean, no offense, but I don’t know you at all.” Alexa argued.

“I understand. And it must be really terrifying for you to have to experience so much, and all at once. And I promise I’ll explain everything as soon as I can, to help you better understand. To make sense of everything.” Dante spoke, keeping his tone calm and in control.

“But you need to know that I care about you, deeply. I only want what’s best for you, bella.”

She frowned again.

“There’s that name again… Bella… who’s bella?” she enquired.

Dante sighed, closing his eyes and lowering his head.

As he lifted his head back up and spoke, he reopened his eyes again.

“Sorry, old habits. Bella is a nickname I have for you.” he explained, swallowing nervously.

“That makes no sense. Why would your nickname for me be bella?” she asked.

“My name’s Alexa, not Bella.”

Bella means beautiful in Italian.” Dante spoke shyly, rubbing the back of his neck.

“I’m Italian…”

Alexa’s expression changed immediately; he called her beautiful… that was his nickname for her.

Alexa suddenly felt a flicker in her heart; a tiny spark of warmth after hearing this from him, though she brushed it aside in the moment.

Dante then looked to the doctor for more assistance in convincing her, from a professional standpoint.

“Ms. Myers, your husband has everything in place and prepared for your arrival. He has already assured me that all your medical needs will be seen to, and I personally know the doctor in charge of your team. I can vouch for him and know he’ll do a good job in helping with your recovery.” the doctor explained, then looking to Dante.

“I’ve already drawn up the discharge papers, so you’re all set to leave, whenever you’re ready to.”

“But I’m not ready to leave.” she protested fearfully, still unsure of Dante’s intentions.

Suddenly Nicola came up with an idea and he used his crutch to stand as he spoke.

“Willow’s waiting for you.” he declared.

“She’s really keen to see you again. She’s been waiting back at our place.”

Alexa immediately turned to look at him in question.

“Willow? What are you talking about?” she asked.

“How do you know Willow?”

“She’s your best friend, has been for years. Crazy redhead, loves having a good time?” Nicola explained.

Alexa suddenly felt somewhat more confident in believing them as she swallowed nervously and then looked to the doctor.

“Trust us, Ms. Myers. You’re perfectly safe. You’re going home.” the doctor admitted.

Alexa then looked back at Dante and wearily, she made her decision.
