Prologue
Age 14
Fifteen yards.
That was all the space between them.
Ava Quinn didn’t feel the cold or the floodlights or the roar of the crowd.
She only felt the ball at her feet…
and the boy sprinting toward her with murder in his eyes.
Kai Madden.
Her shadow.
Her competition.
Her forever “you’re good, but he’s better.”
Not tonight.
She took off down the pitch, weaving through defenders like she was born to run. Every breath was fire, every heartbeat thunder as she closed in on the goal, the sound around her blurring into one long electric hum.
Behind her, she could hear him.
His cleats pounding.
His breath catching.
His voice yelling, “Block her! Someone block her!”
Because he knew.
He knew she was going to take the shot.
Ava planted her foot—
and the world slowed.
Fifteen yards.
The perfect angle.
She struck.
The ball sliced through the air, spinning past the keeper’s reach, kissing the top corner of the net with a sharp, beautiful snap.
GOAL.
The stadium erupted.
Parents cheered, coaches whooped, teammates screamed her name and swarmed her, arms wrapping, voices shaking with disbelief.
She didn’t hear any of it.
Because she was staring across the field…
straight at Kai.
He had stopped running.
Just stood there, chest heaving, hands on his knees, eyes locked on her like she’d personally ended his entire dream.
Maybe she had.
Ava let the smallest, sharpest smile tug at one corner of her mouth.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Triumphant.
Kai’s jaw clenched so hard she could see it from halfway across the pitch.
That was the moment everything changed.
The moment he hated her.
The moment she decided she’d never let him beat her again.
The moment they became each other’s obsession.
The moment a rivalry was born.
A rivalry now worth more than any trophy.
A rivalry they’d carry into high school…
into camp…
into every sprint, scream, bruise, and breath.
Fifteen yards apart.
Always too close.
Always too far.
And neither of them had any idea
what it would grow into.
