Chapter 1

The city of Hollowville was built on a lie.

People said the streets were laid on ancient stone, that the foundations beneath the grand towers were carved by forgotten masons. But if you pressed your ear to the floor in the stillness before dawn, you could hear it: the slow, rhythmic groan of something impossibly large breathing in the deep.

Most citizens ignored it. Pretended it was wind. Pretended it was not the bones of a buried titan shifting in uneasy sleep.

Mala Snow was not like most citizens.

She knelt in the dust behind her family’s workshop, a thin sliver of bone held between her fingers. It was no longer than her palm, carved with grooves that spiraled inward like a whisper. She had found it wedged between floorboards the night before, glowing faintly as if holding its own breath.

Now, in the morning light, it did not glow. But it felt warm.

“Come on,” she muttered, rolling the object between her fingers. “What are you?”

The bone vibrated—softly, like the faint tremble of a plucked string.

Mala jerked her hand back. The bone sliver clattered onto the ground, and before she could snatch it, the dust around it swirled into a delicate pattern: an eye, wide and staring, drawn in a single stroke.

Mala froze.

The dust-eye blinked.

A gasp tore from her throat, and the pattern scattered as her boot instinctively stepped forward. She scooped up the bone, heart pounding. Her mother always told her she had “too much curiosity and not enough sense.” And yet… she could not stop staring at the sliver.

Something about it felt alive.

“Mala!” Her mother’s voice snapped her back. “If you’re done daydreaming, I need those brass hinges polished before noon!”

Mala slipped the bone into her pocket.

“Coming!”

Inside, the workshop smelled of oil and hot metal. Racks of half-finished clockwork items gleamed in the dim light—mechanical birds, gear-driven music boxes, and elaborate locks for wealthy clients.

Her mother, sleeves rolled up, worked at the largest project of all: a vault lock commissioned by the Chancellor himself. Every piece was precision-crafted to resist any ordinary key.

But Mala knew the truth: nothing man-made could resist the magic beneath the city forever.

She took her place at the workbench, dipping a cloth into polish, but her thoughts kept drifting to the bone. To the eye in the dust.

To the stories whispered in Hollowvill’s undercity—of Bone Keys carved from titans and holding the power to unlock memories sealed for centuries.

She didn’t believe in myths.

At least… she didn’t before.

A sudden tremor shook the workshop. Tools rattled. Shelves creaked. Her mother steadied herself, looking toward the floor.

The titan was restless again.

Before Mala could speak, the bone in her pocket burned hot against her leg—so hot she yelped. She grabbed it instinctively.

The world around her vanished.

She was standing in darkness, ankle-deep in shimmering sand. A colossal skeletal shape sprawled across the horizon—ribs like towers, a skull the size of a cathedral. Its eye socket glowed faintly.

The same eye she saw in the dust.

A voice rumbled through the void:

“Return what was taken… Keybearer.”

Mala stumbled back. “I don’t— I don’t understand!”

The titan’s skull lowered, shadows stretching toward her like grasping fingers.

“You will.”

The vision shattered.

She was back in the workshop, breath ragged, bone clutched in her trembling hand. Her mother hadn’t noticed anything—she was still tightening a bolt, humming to herself Mala stared at the bone.

Whatever it was—

whatever it wanted—

it had chosen her.

And nothing in Hollowville would ever be the same.
