It was a quiet Sunday morning when Olivia Davis arrived at West River University. The sun was warm, and the road in front of the campus wasn’t busy. Olivia stepped out of the taxi with her luggage and looked up. The sign for West River University was big and bold. She couldn’t help but smile.
This was her dream. She knew many students from her old school had tried to get in but failed. Thanks to her excellent grades, Olivia had secured her place in the Journalism department. She felt a huge wave of relief and excitement wash over her.
She quickly found the main lobby, showed her admission card, and registered her name. A helpful person at the desk handed her a ID card for the dormitory.
The university grounds were huge. There were large green gardens and a small park filled with bright flowers. She saw special courts for all kinds of sports: basketball, tennis, volleyball, and a big soccer field. Then, she saw her favorite court: the Food Court. It looked wonderful, filled with appetizing smells, and she noticed the prices were low for students.
Olivia thought to herself, I need to drop my bags, get changed, and come back for a big lunch.
As she walked, she spotted a very tall building. A sign told her that this was where all the academic departments were. Her classes would start here tomorrow.
Next, she found a wide, red-painted building—the dormitory. She went inside, showed her ID card at the front desk, signed a list, and received her room key. It was for Room 324.
Olivia took the elevator up to the third floor. She walked past rooms 322, then 323, and finally, 324. The door was slightly open, meaning someone was already inside. She knocked softly.
A girl peeked out and smiled, inviting Olivia to come in.
“Hi, I’m Chloe,” the girl said warmly. “And you must be...”
“I’m Olivia,” she replied, smiling back. “And you must be my roommate.”
They shook hands. Chloe explained, we would have two more roommates, but they hadn’t arrived yet.
Olivia took a moment to look around the room. It was large and spacious. There were four beds, each with a small nightstand next to it. Four wardrobes stood neatly in the corner, and there was a round table with four chairs in the center. Best of all, there were two attached bathrooms. It looked very comfortable. Chloe seemed nice and welcoming, which was a bonus.
“Which department are you in?” Chloe asked.
“Journalism,” Olivia said.
Chloe’s eyes lit up. “Me too! We’ll be in the same classes! That’s great!”
Olivia felt even happier. Having a friend right away was a huge relief.
“Have you eaten lunch yet? I’m starving,” Olivia asked.
“Not yet, but it’s lunchtime now. Come on, let’s go,” Chloe suggested.
Olivia quickly put down her bags, washed her face, and followed Chloe.
“Wait, why are we walking this way?” Olivia asked as Chloe led them past the main Food Court.
“That Food Court is mostly for students who don’t live on campus, the day scholars,” Chloe explained. “We get free meals in our dining hall. But don’t worry, we can definitely go to the Food Court during breaks for snacks or dinner.”
As they walked, Olivia asked, “When did you get here?”
“Yesterday,” Chloe replied. “My parents dropped me off. They are visiting my older brother at Southern University today, so they left me here first.”
Chloe then asked Olivia about her journey. “Did your parents come with you?”
Olivia’s smile faded a little. “No. They live far away in the countryside. My dad really didn’t want me to come here. He wanted me to go to a local university near our village.”
“But this is my dream university,” Olivia continued, her voice determined. “So, I came anyway. My mom is very supportive, though. She promised to convince my dad and then come here to visit me soon.”
They reached the dining hall, and the lunch was delicious. After a short walk back, they started unpacking their things and organizing their area of the room. They talked about their high school memories and what they hoped to achieve at West River. It felt like they had been friends for years.
While they were busy, a knock came at the door. A new girl stepped in. They all greeted her warmly. Her name was Grace, and she was studying Psychology.
Later that night, the fourth roommate arrived. Her name was Phoebe, and she was in the Engineering department.
The four girls instantly clicked. They spent a long time sitting around the table, chatting and laughing about everything from their hometowns to their biggest fears about college. They finally fell asleep late, excited for the busy first day of classes ahead.
