Chapter 1: A hundred years ago
"Seal the door now!" Angie screamed, her voice tight with fear. "NOW! Otherwise, it's over for all of us, Mark!"
He looked around, his voice desperate.
"Wh-where is the book, Angie? W-we need it to seal the door!" Mark frantically scanned the room for the enchanted book.
"Here, I found it!" Angie yelled, holding the book high above her head.
Just as she started to move toward him, a heavy section of the ceiling plaster broke off and crashed to the floor, forming a heap of debris between them. The portal pulsed and grew, expanding like an eye opening into a black void.
"Hurry up, Angie, before they all get out. Just throw the book!" Mark shouted over the wind rushing from the portal.
Angie hurled the book across the gap. Mark stretched out, catching the leather binding with his fingertips. He let out a shaky breath, ripping the book open instantly.
Suddenly, the house began to shake violently.
A gigantic, cracked porcelain hand lunged from the churning portal and slammed onto the old wooden floorboards.
The impact made both Mark and Angie lose their footing. Angie stumbled backward, hitting the wall, and Mark nearly dropped the book he was clutching.
"Hurry, Mark! If that thing gets out, we are all done for!"
Mark stared at the text, quickly locating the incantation. He took a deep breath and began chanting the magic words in a clear, sharp Latin.
As the ancient words filled the cellar, everything seemed to freeze for a split second. Then, the dark portal began to reverse. It pulled inward, creating a vortex that started violently sucking the monster's giant porcelain hand back inside the void, pulling it back towards the source of the evil.
The roaring stopped, leaving behind an unnatural silence. Mark dropped his hand, the spell complete, and the light from the dying portal faded, revealing the dark, gnarled wood of the heavy door.
He looked at the chains on the floor, then to Angie, who was slowly pushing herself off the wall. "It's done," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "But we have to make sure no one ever opens this again."
He gathered the chains and the heavy lock, his hands shaking as he secured the door, knowing the future of the world now depended on this one fragile, wooden barrier.
After a hundred years...
