1 into the wild
The snowflakes gently weighed down resting lightly on the blankets of the fresh winter sheets of snow. Cold as ice the lake in all it's frozen splendor.
"Mom!" A pup cried. "Look at this!" "Yes, Cane?" The mother wolf walked tentatively across the ice. "It's a fish.. unfrozen!" He yipped. "How does that work!"
" I don't know Cane. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Her voice, his mother’s voice always had a playful twang. You could always hear it in her call. The rest of his mother’s pups were with their father.
Mother and son sat and watched the glowing warm beating fish dart in the cold lake. Mother smiled. “Mother, why do I have to stay back?”
“Becuase you’re siblings are stronger and faster than you are.”
“Aren’t you stronger than me” Cane with his blue searched his mother’s with a mellow blue that shown through the shine of his eyes.
Mother titled her head her ears fixed on her son. It was a question for him to go on.
“For if you don’t speak mother, I may not have the confidence to myself...”
“Alright..” She scooted cane closer as they sat side by side.
“I may be weaker than your father.. But, I’m a whole lot stronger than you. Trust that.”
Cane licked his mother’s mouth affectionately. Cane’s stomach gurgled.
“Let’s get you something to eat by the den.” “Yes, mother.” Cane followed close by.
The snow covered forrest was full of squirrels and the like. But today was like any other winter day. And they would feast on a frozen carcass.
Scraping, punting, scratching through the thick trenches of snow. There they found there old kill.
“Bon appetit!” Cane dove in chewing the frozen treat. “I can’t wait to eat something warm!”
Mother dove in as well. The snow stopped an the clouds slightly parted.
The sun did not shine just yet. The scent a familar scent. Family.
Brother, Shin. Sister Weida. Sister, Soverign. And Father Lushi.
“Dad!” Cane called. Lushi, lowered his head to be a calming presence for his children. For this winter was long and a wolf knew the soul of another.
Cane, calmed himself. All at the same time he sat in front of his father.
His coat wasn’t that of the night Like his father nor dark like the earth like his mother But a silver, brackish color.
Weida came fourth to her mother greeting her. Mother Wena, gave the same disposition their father did with cane.
Sovereign dawned black and white markings. Shin their brother took after their mother, and Weida. Was a dusty cloud Grey.
“How was everything?” Wena let out.
Lushi lay beside Wena near the den, and so the kids followed huddleing in close.
The oldest pups and Cane went along in the den.
“Wena, there are few of us..” “Lushi, you know there is nothing we can do..”
Wena continued. “The two leggeds only get bolder and bolder.”
“We’re far from their territory” His black fur stood out against the snows climbing descent. He pressed his coat closer to his mates. They held there togother like that. Not moving or flinching. He whispered in his mate’s ear. “Will find something just for them.
There in the underground den the cubs rested.
Cane lay in top of his enormous siblings who seemed older than himself.
“What were you all doing? .. When you were gone with Father?”
Shin’s mouth and the rest of his features to his muzzle to his eyes twitched incessantly. Cane clicked his tongue. “He’s asleep.
“Weida, can you tell me?” Weida yawned in the close corners.. “Go bother mom..”
She stretched a grumble. Not rude. Just tired.
“Soverign...” Cane whispered.
Soverign smacked her lips. “Are you thrisy, cane?” She asked calmly almost sleepily. “Yeah...” the smile played mimicking the look on his face.
“No your not.” Soverigns shoved Cane into her chest and let out a sigh.
The warmth of family and the cold of the night.
It wasn’t a lonely night. It was a silent night. When the snow stopped, it almost felt unnatural. Like someone stripped the fir trees of their natural rough visage.
Mother Wena and Father Lushi, joined their pups beneath the ground in the den.
They had grown here for only a few months. Yet they were all a year old.
There life was travel. Away from the dreadful human fleshy aliens. That had decided at times that they were not welcome.
Never had they had ever seen such a presence. Nor did their parents bother torturing with them message. For the two legs stopped their misadventures or their treachery on the wolves.
Once they were far enough, they would not come again.
The sun rose in the morning as the sky slowly took shape of the sunrise of the bright colors illuminating the sky. The stark Yellow, oranges, reds. Across blankets the lower half of the sky. Before the wolves wakeing.
Cane, woke first. Yawning he stretched out his paws.
Lushi lay beside Wena. The whole pack had formed in a pile beside on another in a heaping pile.
The warmth and the presence of the pack was unbeatable to any other movement they would have.
The snow did not yet fall. Instead the changing of the weather could be heard.
The whirring of the clouds in the sky. And the way the snow melted in a slight warmed day.
The crows cawed outside their den.
However, there was a scent that carried on the wind. A stranger.. nearby.
Lushi gave the signal for the pups to stay back other than Wena and Shin.
This scent was male. Was it trust worthy. That was unkown.
Wena came out of the den. Scent marking their small territory. Soverign Weida and Cane did the same.
Cane let out a growl. Weida snatched a rabbit in her mouth.
Out in the distant. A howl could be heard.
Soverign howled back. It was anything but a friendly one.
Soverign kept her post. Lushi and Shin were bound to drive him back.
Lushi pov
It’s a he. Lushi told Shin to hang back just far enough, down wind.
I walked along the snow covered earth. I kept my steps light discerning the stranger.
His fur was white. His pelt ragged his bones lunching out.
He would be no threat. Soon enough they were face to face.
Lushi spoke silently. Questioning his letter of origin.
The white wolf determined friendly yet shy stance.
“You can come with me.” Lushi spoke gruffly. “If the pack is in any danger because of you, you will be kicked out.”
They there toe pads feeling through the snow their paws thick with fur.
The way the shifted through the snow uncovered without a care.
Shin shown a wag of his tail and a smile at once.
Though he wanted this new entity to know he wasn’t going to pull punches. At the same time he saw no reason to disregard him.
Back at the den.
Weida spoke aloud at once. “He’s skinny”
“He’s short like me!” Cane yipped in delight.
Cane about leapt toward the stranger. Soverign held him back with a nip.
“You can’t just go trusting every face you see, Your Lushi’s son.”
“Your his daughter...” Soveirgn gave a frustrated sigh. “Fair point, cane”
Wena didn’t greet she observed him as she lay watching attentively.
Ears perked and no easy way for this fella.
Sovering had walked back in the den.
Weida, instead wanted to rough and tumble with the stranger.
Shyly he grinned bowing. It was like saying. I’m very keen on hopeing you will accept me.
“Weida grinned let’s eat..”
Wena spotted something, an faint scent an unnatural one.
Weida and the pale wolf ate. “Where did you come from?”
" I came from, from..” “I don’t know.. I was always taken care of my parents always cared for me.”
Wena gave a sympathetic nodd. “Well, you’ll have to work out here, not matter where you came from.” A softness hinged in her voice.
The rest of the family had not much left of the carcass.
The hunting started.
The deer we’re the targets and this time Cane would come into the hunt.
Scents, following, cascading. The winter air hung low as they moved through snows passage their feet gudeing them to the next destination.
There they were a herd of 20 head. Far beyond the den walls.
United they came to the signals of their mother with their father in toe.
Creeping, stalking a fair distance away. They were covered it seemed.
The pale wolf unmistakably gave a sudden movement.
Shin peckish. Wanted to glower at him.
The pack quickly jumped at the hunt after those splint secounds.
Instead of young doe. They found themselves with a meal of 5 point buck.
It stood it’s ground just long enough. The wolves dodged, hindering gliding through their terrain careful to not be landed a blow.
The pale wolf, eager to prove himself. Snarled at the prey. Biting at it’s hind.
Lushi held at it’s neck. The whole pack gave hold as the deer gave it’s last hurrah.
The pale wolf gave out a sound. That could be supposed as pain.
Each wolf dove in with one another. The pale wolf licked at the sharp new wound at his jowels.
Cane quickly became close to the pale wolf. Locking his wounds with him.
The pack watched and warmed. Soon they gathered affectionately in a frenzy.
That day. Each youngster carried back a piece of the kill.
