Summary

Navi was engineered to be perfect—and owned to be disposable. Born from human DNA and rare Tzelyrion genetics, she’s spent eighty-four years being bought, sold, and displayed in a galaxy where “clone” is just another word for property. Empathic, long-lived, and labeled dangerous by the corporations that created her, Navi survives by staying sharp, staying distant, and never believing in mercy. Kragthar never wanted to own anyone. A scarred Drakarth weapons specialist with no status and no future, he’s feared across the galaxy and unwanted by his own kind. After a lifetime of war, blood, and isolation, he walks into an auction house looking for one simple thing: a female who won’t break at the sight of him. What he finds is Navi. She’s defiant where others are afraid, calculating where others submit. He’s blunt, dangerous, and unexpectedly unwilling to treat her like a thing. Their first encounter ignites something volatile—fire meeting fire, survival clashing with desire. In a universe where clones aren’t people and ownership is law, choosing each other could cost them everything. Because Navi isn’t a tame creation. And Kragthar has never been afraid of a flame that might burn him back.

Clones

Clones are genetically engineered humans created by corporations for various purposes, using human DNA as a base. Despite being genetically human, they are widely referred to as “clones,” a term rooted in misunderstanding but now used to dehumanize them. The Cosmo Galactic Office has labeled the human species “invalid,” stripping humans of their rights and making their DNA freely available for scientific and commercial use.

Clones are engineered for tasks such as soldiers, workers, and companions, with up to 20% of their DNA enhanced using other species’ genetics. For example, construction clones may be modified with Melechi DNA to increase strength and durability. These beings are treated as property, registered to an owner, and tracked with traceable chips.

Why “Clone”?

The term “clone” gained traction during the early days of genetic engineering when GeneSys Industries released its first line of engineered humans. The word was chosen to stress the uniformity and reliability of the product, assuring buyers that these beings weren’t individuals but standardized tools for specific tasks.

One incident made the term stick: during a GeneSys demonstration, a clone malfunctioned and protested its conditions. A corporate representative dismissed it with the words, “It’s just a clone. Replace it.” This moment, broadcast across multiple systems, solidified the term’s association with disposability and non-human status.

Though they are biologically human, the term “clone” continues to enforce their role as property rather than people. Clones might share similarities but each clone is unique, just as a human being is. Different features, different builds and sizes.

Reproductive Abilities

Clones are made with functional reproductive organs, but their ability to reproduce is suppressed during the vat-growing process. Female clones don’t produce eggs, and male clones’ sperm is rendered inert. This ensures clones cannot naturally have children, keeping population control firmly in corporate hands.

However, a master can purchase a special fertility shot to make a registered clone fertile. The shot requires a visit to a clinic and involves several medpens injected into the abdomen, thigh, and buttocks. For females, the shot provides eggs, while for males, it restores viable sperm. Once treated, the clone is reclassified as fertile and registered under new regulations.

Children born from clones are legally owned by the master, who becomes their registered parent and heir. This system discourages irresponsible pregnancies and ensures offspring remain under control.

Masters and Clone Unions

If a master officially unions with a clone, the clone gains certain protections. They cannot be sold after the master’s death and will receive a pension for support. While rare, these unions offer a level of security for clones in a society that sees them as property. After a master takes a clone in a union his status changes, and he cannot marry any other person.

Clones and the Birthrate Problem

With declining birth rates across the galaxy, clones are increasingly seen as a solution. Many people buy clones specifically for family purposes, purchasing “family starter kits” or fertility treatments to expand their households. This has led to clones being more integrated into personal lives, though their status as property remains unchanged.

Clones remain trapped between their utility and their humanity, viewed as vital but disposable in a galaxy that continues to grapple with their ethical treatment.
