Chapter 1 - Stillborn

The lights flickered.

Not all at once—just enough to be noticed.

A nurse paused mid-step, fingers tightening around the metal rail of the bassinet. Somewhere down the corridor, a monitor stuttered, then steadied. The room smelled of antiseptic and iron, sharp and overwhelming, as if the air itself had been scrubbed too clean.

“Push,” the doctor said gently.

Amery’s mother obeyed, her body trembling with exhaustion. Tears streamed down her face, not from pain alone, but from the quiet fear creeping in—the kind no one wanted to name.

The baby emerged without a cry.

Silence followed.

The doctor’s expression shifted first. Subtle. Controlled. But unmistakable. He checked again. And then again.

“I don’t hear a heartbeat,” he said.

The words fell heavy in the room.

Amery’s father collapsed into the chair beside the bed, hands pressed to his face. Her mother reached out instinctively, desperate, as the doctor lifted the infant—small, impossibly still—and placed her in her arms.

“She’s not breathing,” the nurse whispered.

Amery’s mother cradled the child, rocking gently, whispering prayers through broken sobs. The baby’s skin was pale, lips faintly blue, eyes closed as though asleep.

The lights flickered again.

This time, longer.

A shadow stretched across the far wall—wrong somehow. Too tall. Too still. Its edges blurred and sharp at the same time, like something struggling to exist in the space it occupied.

No one noticed.

The machines hummed louder, then softer, as if holding their breath.

For a single moment—barely a heartbeat—the shadow shifted.

And the baby inhaled.

A sharp, sudden breath tore through the silence.

The nurse gasped. The doctor froze. Amery’s mother cried out as the infant’s chest rose again, tiny fingers curling weakly against her skin.

“She’s—” the nurse stammered. “She’s breathing.”

The monitors began to beep, hesitant at first, then steadier. A heartbeat appeared on the screen. Slow. Fragile. But there.

Amery’s parents stared at each other in stunned disbelief, hope and fear tangling painfully in their expressions.

“That’s not possible,” the doctor murmured.

The lights steadied.

The shadow was gone.

They took the baby away for observation, doctors murmuring quietly, voices strained with confusion. Amery’s mother watched until the door closed, her arms still curved as though holding something that was no longer there.

“What just happened?” she whispered.

No one answered.

Somewhere unseen, something listened.

And far beyond the sterile walls of the hospital, a presence turned away—not in defeat, but in patience.

Because some things, once placed, do not need to be watched.

user-tYYAB62Jw9: I loved your/this story, thank you 😊 . Look forward to more writings. I was so invested in the kids. Curious who or which one is Annie's mate. Maybe Dylan since Collin is a werewolf. Although she'd also make a good Luna. Smiles 🙂

Roxx@n: It was longer, it was a really good read. I enjoyed it a lot. Wanted to see if Carlos became a great dad and he Grayson his friend out loud. He's rather closed off so a lil broader back story would be nice. And yes the wedding and twins announcement. A girl can hope right?

Neenygirl: A really good story. There is great banter, a plot twist that you won’t see coming, an MMC who is arrogant, dominant and sometimes mean, which will shock you and a witty, strong, smart mouth FMC. It gets a tiny bit loose after the plot twist however comes back so stick with it and is a bit cliche ...
