Conscience Reminisce
Appearance and Attire:
Conscience Reminisce is a young adult unicorn stallion around Twilight Sparkle’s age, with maroon/black-cherry fur, wine/wine-plum hooves, chest, and stomach, a wavy sandy blonde pomade mane and tail, and turquoise eyes.
Conscience is always seen wearing a simple, beige slanted wide‑brimmed straw fedora with a narrow band and matching beige neckerchief, except when he is on duty as a Royal Guard, at which time he wears a unique set of Canterlot Royal Guard armor: a polished steel helmet with a sandy blonde plume matching his mane and tail, a polished steel chestplate with a green five‑pointed star emblem on the front that matches the star on his cutie mark, a matching steel peytral, and steel hoof guards, along with the standard ceremonial spear.
His cutie mark is a steel shield with an olive-colored five-pointed star on the front, surrounded by thick white fog, which emphasizes magic, clarity, and his destiny as a Royal Guard.
Personality:
Conscience is loyal, thoughtful, mild-mannered, polite, empathetic, passionate, mature, pragmatic, cooperative, and trustworthy. He is also distant and emotionally repressed, though this stems from guilt about his sister’s injury and guilt for feeling guilty about it, even if his sister doesn't want him to, rather than being an immutable part of his personality. He wishes he weren't so distant and repressed and is actively trying to heal at his sister's request.
Skills, abilities, and talents:
As a colt, Conscience studied magic diligently, poring over books and scrolls on spells, wards, and magical theory. He learned the principles behind levitation, illumination, protective barriers, and other spells, but had little practical experience before being invited to Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns (the School of Magic).
When Conscience channels magic through his horn, it manifests as a muted olive-green aura—steady, subdued, and most pronounced during protective and warding spells rather than raw offensive magic.
It was during a life-or-death moment in the cave incident with his sister that his innate protective talent first manifested. Desperate to protect them both, Conscience instinctively cast a force field spell—though he had never practiced it before—shielding them as they made their way out. Once safely outside, he deactivated the barrier and saw that Conscious Memory had been gravely injured, one of her wings struck hard against the stone. Without hesitation, he carried her all the way home, refusing to stop despite his exhaustion. This early display of protective magic foreshadowed the skill he would later refine at the School of Magic.
At the School of Magic, Conscience trained rigorously, turning knowledge into skill. There, he mastered protective magic, such as the force field spell, learned to teleport to pictured locations, cast horn beams, and conjure levitation and illumination at will. He also trained in combat and tactical spellwork, learning to combine magic strategically to protect others. The chain spell, however, was taught to him later as part of his Royal Guard training, separate from his formal magical education. This spell conjures magical chains capable of restraining or immobilizing targets, making it useful for capturing or subduing prisoners without causing permanent harm.
In addition to magic, Conscience is highly trained as a Royal Guard. He wields a spear expertly, maintains formation, and can give orders in the captain’s absence. His combined skills in magic and combat reflect the essence of his cutie mark: magic, clarity, and duty.
Relationships:
He once had a close relationship with his parents, especially his father, but after his sister’s injury, that bond became distant. He thinks they might blame him, though he could never bring himself to ask. He remains incredibly close to his younger sister, despite feeling guilty for her injury. She’s the only one he doesn't repress his feelings and emotions towards and around.
He harbors quiet, deeply repressed feelings for Twilight Sparkle, though he keeps them carefully buried beneath distance and composure—for now. Around her, he is measured, thoughtful, and just slightly too restrained, as though afraid that letting himself soften would unravel something he cannot afford to lose. From his days at Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, he remembers Trixie Lulamoon and Moondancer. Trixie was loud, performative, impossible to ignore. Moondancer, however, was quieter—brilliant in a way that felt familiar. He quietly considers her a kindred mind. There is a comfort in her presence that he rarely allows himself to acknowledge—an ease born from shared discipline and mutual understanding. Though his heart remains tethered, however silently, to Twilight, there are moments when he wonders if what he feels for Moondancer is not entirely platonic. The feeling is faint, tentative, and largely unexplored… but it exists.
He has genuine respect for his captain, Shining Armor, and quietly wishes they could be friends, but he represses that desire and keeps his distance at the moment. He has the most respect for Princess Celestia and is thankful to her for personally inviting him to her school. In the years following his sister’s injury and his parents’ emotional distance, Conscience came to see Celestia as a quiet maternal figure—one who offered guidance, faith, and stability without expectation. Because of this, and because of the weight that role holds in his heart, he has never been able to bring himself to thank her directly. He also respects Cadence as a princess and as Shining Armor’s wife, and Princess Luna, having served under her and understanding her redemption.
He is aware of the other members of the Mane Six—Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie—by reputation and occasionally notices them from afar, though he never interacts with them directly. He knows about Spike and his brother-like relationship with Twilight. He finds comfort in it and genuinely loves that for her, even though it quietly reminds him of his own little sister, bringing him both pain and warmth in equal measure.
Conscience served alongside Spearhead until the latter left to pursue art, and with Flash Sentry during several royal guard rotations. He respects Flash’s optimism, friendliness, and ease around others—qualities Conscience felt he lacked. Flash’s open admiration for Twilight Sparkle is something Conscience quietly notices but never comments on; he harbors no resentment, only a distant, bittersweet acceptance. Even so, he thinks highly of Flash and considers him one of the few ponies who might become a real friend if he allowed himself the chance. He had an immediate dislike of Zephyr Breeze when he joined the Royal Guard however briefly, due to Zephyr’s braggart and full-of-himself personality, wondering why they let him join in the first place.
Through his sister, Conscience becomes acquainted with Derpy Hooves, a mailmare whose presence he initially regarded as incidental. Over time, he finds her company unexpectedly grounding—her warmth is unforced, her humor unintentional, and her lack of judgment quietly disarming. Derpy meets his reserve with ease rather than curiosity, and he comes to value the quiet moments they share, especially when her presence brings unguarded laughter to his sister, a sound he hadn’t realized he’d missed in years. Though his feelings for Twilight remain unspoken, he begins to appreciate Derpy’s lighthearted nature, hinting at a closeness that could grow under different circumstances without undermining his bond with Twilight.
Lore:
Conscience Reminisce was born and raised in Canterlot by his mother, Sentience Think, and his father, Mind Recall, alongside his younger sister, Conscious Memory. As a colt, he was studious and earnest, spending much of his time immersed in books on magic, the legends of Flash Magnus, and anything that might help him one day become a Royal Guard. Even then, he believed that protection was the highest form of purpose.
In his youth, Conscience came across a book describing a dangerous cave beyond Canterlot’s borders. Naive and eager to prove himself, he resolved to visit it alone—but his sister, a young pegasus full of curiosity and confidence, insisted on accompanying him. Unable to refuse her, he agreed. Inside the cave, something unseen sensed their presence and began to pursue them. They never saw what it was, only felt its terror pressing closer.
Desperate to protect them both, Conscience instinctively cast a force field spell—though he had never practiced it before—shielding them as they made their way out. Once they were safely outside, he deactivated the barrier and saw that Conscious Memory had been gravely injured, her left wing struck hard against the stone. Without hesitation, he carried her all the way home, refusing to stop despite his exhaustion.
At home, their parents rushed to her side and sought medical help at once. Though the healers were able to save her life, her wing healed unevenly. They could not say whether flight would ever fully return—only that pegasus magic followed uncertain paths, and that some wounds revealed their answers slowly. Conscious Memory survived, awake and aware, her spirit intact even as her wing refused to answer her will.
For Conscience, the uncertainty was heavier than any final verdict. Standing at her bedside in the quiet that followed, the weight of responsibility, fear, and helplessness pressed down upon him all at once. In that moment—caught between hope and guilt—his cutie mark appeared: a steel shield bearing an olive-colored five-pointed star, wreathed in thick white fog, a symbol of protection chosen in the presence of loss, and of clarity that comes only through restraint.
In the weeks after her return home, Conscience began wearing his sister’s old slanted straw fedora, a small habit that endured long after the worst of the fear had passed. His relationship with his parents grew distant in the years that followed—polite, careful, and never fully at ease. Though no blame was ever spoken aloud, Conscience could not shake the feeling that they might hold him responsible, and he lacked the courage to ask.
With Conscious Memory, however, he remained close. She never blamed him for what had happened, speaking instead with quiet honesty and an acceptance that unsettled him more than anger ever could. It was Conscience who carried the guilt she did not ask him to bear, watching her carefully, helping perhaps too much, measuring every choice against the harm he feared he might cause again.
Not long after, Princess Celestia personally invited Conscience to attend her School for Gifted Unicorns, recognizing both the unusual manifestation of his cutie mark and his affinity with the element of magic. It was there that he first met Twilight Sparkle, one of his classmates. Even then, he sensed that she was destined for something extraordinary. He admired her intellect, determination, and openness, but his own growing reserve—hardened by guilt and watchfulness—kept him at a careful distance. He observed, respected, and quietly supported, never allowing himself to approach.
A few months into his studies at Celestia’s School, Conscience returned home for a visit. He spoke openly to Conscious about his classmates, sharing his impressions and experiences without pretense. When he mentioned a unicorn filly named Twilight Sparkle, his cheeks flushed slightly, and he looked away for a brief moment—not out of shame, but because the feelings were new and stirring. He admitted that he had kept his distance from some ponies, honestly explaining why, but never hiding his emotions from his sister.
Conscious listened with patient interest, encouraging him with her gentle questions and supportive words. Her quiet belief in his ability to connect with others struck Conscience deeply. As he watched, her expression brightened, and in that moment, her cutie mark appeared: a bright red heart with an olive 5-pointed star on the front traced with a white electrocardiogram. Conscience felt a quiet pride and admiration swell within him, recognizing the courage and sincerity she had nurtured, even as he had tried to guide her in return. He realized then that protection and care could take many forms, not just shielding others, but encouraging them to grow and trust themselves.
After graduating, Conscience fulfilled the purpose he had carried since foalhood and joined the Canterlot Royal Guard, eventually rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. His service was marked by diligence, reliability, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. Though outwardly composed, he continued to wrestle with the belief that his role was to protect others from the margins, never to draw too close.
In time, his duties brought him to Ponyville on several occasions. At first, he maintained his distance, quietly keeping watch over Twilight Sparkle as she carried out her duties as Princess Celestia’s foremost student. Gradually, however, circumstances drew them into brief but genuine interactions—discussions about old warding spells, protective magic, and Canterlot’s historical defenses. Twilight came to recognize him not merely as a guard, but as a thoughtful and careful speaker, one who listened intently and chose his words with care.
On rare occasions, Conscience found himself remaining after their conversations had naturally ended. The silence unsettled him, but he no longer fled from it. He began answering when Twilight asked his opinion, and—more surprisingly—offering it without being prompted when he felt it might help. These moments were small, easily overlooked by others, yet they marked a quiet shift within him.
As time passed, Conscience’s memories of his sister slowly changed in character. Though the pain and uncertainty never vanished, he began to wonder whether she would want him to live only as a distant sentinel. That thought, gentle and persistent, encouraged him to step closer to others, even when fear urged him to remain apart.
Though he still struggled with repression and restraint, Conscience found that he no longer wished only to watch from afar. He did not yet know where this change would lead, nor did he dare name it—but for the first time since the day in the cave, he allowed himself to believe that protecting others did not require standing alone.
Recurring dreams:
When he sleeps, Conscience often dreams of many different things. He dreams of finally speaking openly to Twilight Sparkle or Shining Armor, sharing the thoughts he keeps hidden while awake. Occasionally, he dreams of his parents again, embracing him and talking to him as they once did.
On rarer occasions, he experiences nightmares. In one, he dreams his sister yells at him, though he knows it is only the echo of his own guilt, blaming him for what happened. In another, he relives the cave incident, feeling the helplessness and fear of that day all over again. In another, he is forced to confront the possibility of Twilight choosing Flash Sentry, with Flash openly boasting about it and using Conscience’s silence and hesitation against him.
