Chapter 1

I was in the elevator, waiting to arrive at my office floor, with so much on my mind. I needed to come up with my new design quickly, and I also had to be a maid of honour at my sister’s wedding, which wasn't really my thing. I exhaled deeply and told myself, "God, let 2014 be a normal year without any drama; then I will be just fine." A little pep talk was helpful in situations like this.

The elevator doors opened, and I walked out, heading to my office. My assistant approached me and said, "Good morning, Emily. You have a meeting with Swatch. They would like you to be the spokesperson, and your sister sent you your dress for the wedding. It's in your office."

“Thanks, Amy. Please give Swatch a call and let them know I'll do it, and ask them to send me the time and date,” I replied.

"Do you want your usual Starbucks coffee and muffin?” she asked.

“Yes, please.”

“Got it.”

“Thanks,” I said, then walked into my office, shook off my jacket and bag, and took a moment to relax before looking at the dress.

I pulled out my special design, a wedding dress. It was my dream dress for when I eventually get married, if I ever do. It was a work of art that took me weeks to conceptualise and put to paper. The urge to design it felt foreign, but here it was, and I couldn’t help but wonder if I would actually use it.

Setting the design aside, I stood up to check out the dress my sister had sent. I hoped she had found a nice design; if not, I was not going to wear the dress. It hurt that she hadn’t asked me to design the dresses, but I understood that such decisions lead to unnecessary conflict.

I approached the dress, took off the covering, and gasped at the sight of it. It was a beautiful ivory colour adorned with a lovely floral pattern.

“Emily, your sister is here.”

“Bring her in.” My sister was my best friend, a beautiful and graceful woman with long brown hair, big eyes, a well-toned body, and an exquisite personality.

I was more on the sexy side with my thick, luscious platinum brunette hair, brown piercing eyes, full lips, a curvy body, and a spiky, fiery personality. We were quite different from one another.

“Hey, Emily.”

“Hi, Bridget.”

“So, do you love the dress?”

“Yes, I do. It’s cute.”

"Great! So tomorrow, please join Brian and me for lunch at La Bonita.”

“Why?”

“I want you to meet Brian’s brother, and his wife will be there too.”

“What’s in it for me?”

“Please, Emily. I need my sister with me for this; the brother is the best man, and you’re the maid of honour.”

“So, you want all the important people there?”

“Yes, exactly. So will you come?”

“Yeah, why not? I have nothing better to do, so I guess I will.”

“Perfect! It’s at 2:00 PM. Make sure to wear something hot.”

“Why?”

“Just listen to your sister, please.”

“Okay, whatever.”

“Thank you, thank you, thank you! You’re the best. I owe you big time.”

“Yes, you sure do.”

“Alright, I have to go. I left Megan with the nanny at home, and I don’t trust other people with my baby.”

“Okay, tell my little niece that I love her and can’t wait to spend the weekend with her.”

“Will do. Bye, love.”

“Bye, angel,” I replied as my sister left.

I started with the plans for my runway show. I reviewed my other commitments for the year and realised I was overloaded with work, but I didn’t mind because I was doing what I loved, and it enriched my life every day.

“Hey, sexy.”

“Hey, Kevin.”

“I brought us your usual. I decided today I’m going to grace you with my presence.” I smiled and sat down, and Kevin joined me. Gavin was my best friend from high school, and he was gay—someone I loved to pieces.

We had dated, but then he realised he felt out of sorts being with women and decided to embrace who he was. I was more than okay with it. He had an attractive boyfriend who adored him just as much as he did.
