Chapter 1

The moon bore down on Elaris, its crimson hue casting eerie shadows across the narrow alleyways. Selena slipped through the darkness, her movements fluid and silent, honed by years of survival in the city’s gritty underbelly. Her target was close—a relic hidden within the vaults of the enigmatic Order of the Red Moon. Legends whispered of its power, but tonight, it was the key to settling an old score.

Her heart thudded like a war drum as she approached the wrought iron gates of the mansion. Technology and magic fused in the security system, but she wasn’t deterred. Pulling a small device from her belt, she disabled the locks with a satisfying click. She slipped inside, her senses heightened. The floor plans she’d memorized came into play as she navigated the dimly lit hallways, every step a calculated risk.

The vault was nestled deep within the mansion’s heart, guarded by runes and spells older than the city itself. She leaned against the ancient wood, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns. There was a distinctive chill in the air, an almost palpable sense of foreboding. Taking a deep breath, she began to decipher the wards. As the final seal broke, a low hum emanated from the door, and it swung open almost imperceptibly.

Inside, the relic rested on a pedestal shrouded in velvet. It was smaller than she’d imagined, an ornate dagger with a gemstone that seemed to pulse rhythmically. She reached for it, but a voice broke the silence. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

Selena spun around, dagger in hand, facing the intruder. A tall figure emerged from the shadows, his features sharp and eyes glinting with dangerous curiosity. He seemed to belong to the darkness itself, his presence unsettling. “Who are you?” she demanded, tightening her grip on the relic.

“A friend,” he replied, though his smirk suggested otherwise. “Or perhaps an enemy. It depends on what you intend to do with that.” He nodded toward the dagger. Selena felt an electric tension in the air, knowing this was far from a mere coincidence. Profiles of the Order had warned of such encounters, yet seeing him here, in the flesh, felt daunting.

“Speak quickly then,” she hissed through clenched teeth. “If you’re here to stop me, you’re already too late.” The man’s eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion, and he stepped closer, forcing her to reassess her every move. The night was young, and the game they’d begun was only unfolding.
