Chapter 1 - The Bloodied Veil
Valkyrie - Book 1 - The White Wolf Saga
Prologue
In the nascent dawn of the world, when the veil between mortal and beast was thin, the Moongoddess, bathed in celestial silver, dreamt of harmony. She envisioned a realm where instinct and intellect danced in perfect accord, where the wild heart and the rational mind beat as one. Thus, from the fertile earth and the whispering winds, she sculpted her masterpiece: the Shifters.
Born not of flesh and blood alone, but of moonlight and ancient magic, the first two emerged. A male, forged amidst the towering peaks of the Northern Range, his spirit as untamed as the blizzards that swirled around his birthplace. And a female, rising from the sun-kissed shores of the Southern Sea, her heart as boundless as the ocean that cradled her.
Each was gifted with a duality: the form of man, imbued with reason and wisdom, and the spirit of wolf, fierce and free. Yet, they were incomplete, two halves of a divine whole. The Moon Goddess whispered a prophecy into the winds, a promise and a challenge: “Seek your other half across the vast expanse of the realm. Should you find each other, a bond unlike any other shall be forged, a love so potent it will merge your souls, making you stronger than any who follow.”
Driven by an unseen force, a yearning etched into their very being, they embarked on their solitary journeys. Their paths were fraught with peril, their resolve tested by the untamed wilds. Yet, the promise of the Moon Goddess, the whisper of their destined union, fueled their unwavering quest.
Finally, after trials beyond measure, their paths converged. In that instant, recognition sparked; a searing, undeniable connection that transcended the physical. The world around them faded as a torrent of emotion surged through their veins, binding them together, heart and soul, wolf and man. The mate bond, the Moon Goddess's ultimate gift, ignited, melding them, as if one, into a single, powerful entity. This bond, a fusion of spirits, amplified their strengths, their love a shield against any foe.
As the Shifter population flourished, the realm expanded, and the need for governance arose. Alphas, imbued with strength and wisdom, were granted dominion over different territories, their rule ensuring balance and prosperity. Those of the purest lineage, descendants of the first two, reigned supreme, their authority unquestioned, and peace prevailed throughout the land.
But as time marched on, the whispers of ambition and the lust for power began to fester in the hearts of some. The harmony envisioned by the Moon Goddess fractured, and from the shadows emerged the vilest of all Shifters—the Rogues, driven by greed and a thirst for dominance. With the rise of these dark forces, the purity of the original bloodline began to wane, diluted by generations of intermingling. The birth of a pure white wolf, once a frequent testament to the strength of the lineage, became a rarity, a fading echo of a bygone era. Generations have passed since the last perfectly white wolf graced the realm, a chilling omen of the darkness threatening to consume the world of the Shifters.
King Cassian, Queen Isolde, and their young daughter, attacked and consumed by a raging inferno, shattered the last vestiges of hope. Their deaths, the last remaining originals gone, left the kingdom vulnerable, plunging the realm into an era of strife. Alphas, vying for supremacy, clash in a brutal power struggle, while the insidious Rogues exploit the chaos, their dark ambitions set on conquering all.
Chapter 1 The Bloodied Veil
The acrid tang of blood hung heavy in King Ronan's throne room, a stark contrast to the rich tapestries and polished stone. Aspen's claws, still extended, dripped with the lifeblood of the last rogue who’d dared breach these walls. They had come like rabid animals, a pathetic vanguard for their Alpha, swiftly dispatched by Aspen's cold fury; a fury fueled less by loyalty to Ronan and more by the instability of his reign.
Whispers had plagued the court for weeks, the council's fear mirroring the unease gripping the kingdom. Skirmishes between ambitious Alphas had erupted in the outlying territories, a clear sign of growing unrest. Ronan, however, remained stubbornly resolute, seemingly oblivious to the brewing storm.
“He should have seen this coming,” Aspen thought, bitterness rising. “A competent king would have anticipated such a brazen attack.”
The Alpha Rogue’s strategy was baffling. Sending waves of warriors to die seemed reckless.
“A desperate gambit? Or a carefully crafted trap?”
The uncertainty gnawed at Aspen, not just for the kingdom he served, but for the remnants of his own pack, swallowed by Ronan's ambition.
"General Aspen," Zephyr, the King's Beta, announced, his voice ringing with authority. “His Majesty’s orders are to prepare the warriors. We ride at dawn.”
“Dawn. So soon.”
Ronan, eager for blood, cared little for the lives it would cost. "It will be done, Beta," Aspen replied, his voice flat, betraying none of his contempt.
Zephyr nodded curtly, and Aspen felt the weight of the coming battle, the weight of Ronan's recklessness, settle heavily upon him. This wasn't the war he wanted, but it was the war Ronan had brought upon them. And Aspen would see it through, not for the king, but for the kingdom.
As the dust settled, revealing the carnage, King Ronan and Luna Wren emerged from the lower levels. Wren’s face was pale with shock, mirroring the horror of the surviving guards. Ronan, as usual, had retreated at the first sign of attack, entrusting his safety to others.
“A king who ruled from the shadows.” The thought curdled in Aspen's gut.
"Has General Aspen been directed to prepare for war?" Ronan addressed Zephyr, his voice tight with forced authority.
"Yes, my King," Zephyr stated firmly. "I will leave men to protect you and Luna Wren. Alpha Tristen will reinforce our borders." The last part, added for reassurance, was a subtle reminder of the alliances Ronan relied upon.
At dawn, they mounted their warhorses. The rogue kingdom lay a day’s ride north. They would arrive near nightfall, cloaked in shadows, perfect for Aspen’s plan. He would unleash his warriors in their wolf forms, using their superior night vision for a stealth attack.
Dismounting, Aspen was the first to shift, the familiar rush of power surging through him. His warriors followed, snarls and snapping bones echoing in the twilight. They moved as one into the forest, the darkness clinging to them.
Then, he smelled it, the metallic stench of rogue wolves, tinged with decay and dark magic. They were waiting.
Hundreds of feral creatures surrounded them, eyes burning. But even with their numbers, they were no match for Aspen's elite warriors. The forest floor became a vortex of flashing fangs and ripped flesh.
Aspen moved through the carnage, his jaws a blur of death. Then, a flash of white caught his attention. A woman, running as if pursued by demons, her body barely covered by tattered rags.
As she disappeared, a rogue landed on Aspen's back. With a furious snarl, Aspen bucked him off, fangs sinking deep into his neck.
Turning back to where the woman had vanished, he saw the Alpha Rogue, sprinting through the trees with several wolves at his heels, following the same path. He wasn’t interested in the battle; his focus was solely on the fleeing woman.
Confusion tightened in Aspen’s chest. “Why? Who was she to him? What was so important about her?”
…
The moon-haired little girl huddled in the corner, trembling, as the echoes of screams and crashing furniture filled the air. Thick smoke snaked under the door, stinging her eyes and triggering a coughing fit. A hand clamped over her mouth, desperate for silence.
The door burst open, revealing flames and dark figures. Terror paralyzed her as hands grabbed her roughly, hoisting her over a shoulder…
She jolted awake, gasping. The fire, the smoke, the fear, the recurring nightmare. Instinctively, she covered her mouth, stifling a sob, years of ingrained habit preventing her from disturbing the Alpha Rogue's sleep.
Another slave girl stirred, eyes narrowed in annoyance. They all resented the silver-collared girl. Perhaps it was the one privilege she possessed: she was the only woman in his chambers spared his bed.
Every other woman brought there suffered the same fate on their first night. Thrown onto the massive bed, their screams echoed as he took what he wanted. The bed was reserved solely for his lust.
The rest slept on the floor, his claimed possessions. And there the moon-haired girl lay, night after night, beside his head, the same spot she'd occupied since she was a child, pulled from the wreckage of that fire. Yet, he never touched her. The other women despised her for it. But every night, like them, she cowered, knowing that one day, he might choose her.
Sleep eluded her. The hard floor offered little comfort. She was well-acquainted with the sting of splinters from restless nights. A chill permeated the air and though years of sleeping without a blanket had hardened her somewhat, she still yearned for warmth.
As the first rays of dawn crept into the room, she rose, the other women following suit. They moved with practiced silence, careful not to disturb the Alpha's slumber as they filed out to perform their daily duties.
In the kitchen, the silver-collared girl watched the staff load trays, hunger twisting in her gut.
“Was there ever truly a time when I ate my fill? Or were those memories just a childish dream, a desperate fabrication of a mind starved for more than just food? Perhaps they were remnants of a life before…before I was taken.” She thought.
The loaded tray felt impossibly heavy as she walked to the main hall. The stench of stale ale, sweat and testosterone hung heavy in the air. Rows of rough-hewn tables filled the vast space, the wooden floors stained dark with blood and other, less identifiable fluids.
The wall behind the Alpha's table was blackened with soot from the massive fireplace that roared behind his chair. On the other walls hung chains and shackles, displaying captured wolves in their human forms like grotesque trophies. They clung to life, their bodies battered and broken, as warriors occasionally rose from their feasting to use them as punching bags or targets for knife-throwing, roaring with laughter at each successful hit. The sight, though familiar, never failed to churn her stomach, a wave of nausea rising in her throat.
As the other slave women approached their assigned tables, hesitantly placing food before the warriors, they were grabbed, groped, and often worse, their cries of protest ignored. The girl had been given the dubious honor of serving at the Alpha's table. Anyone who dared to touch her as she performed her duties quickly lost the offending limb, courtesy of the Alpha himself.
He always watched her as she approached, his eyes burning with a predatory intensity that made her skin crawl. She kept her gaze fixed firmly on the floor, careful to avoid any eye contact. It was one of the many rules she had learned to survive, the scars on her body serving as grim reminders of the consequences of disobedience.
“Never look the Alpha or a warrior in the eye. Never speak unless spoken to, though my voice no longer functioned. Always obey. And always, always kneel when not performing a task.” She repeated in her head.
As she finished serving, she sank to her knees, the skin calloused and hardened from years of the same subservient posture.
As the feasting ended, the warriors’ heavy footsteps echoing down the hall, she finally risked a glance around the room, her peripheral vision scanning for any lingering presence. Once she was certain it was clear, she rose, joining the other slave women in a frantic scramble for the discarded plates. They grabbed and shoved, fighting for any scraps of food left behind. There was a time when she would help the newer slaves, sharing what little she managed to scavenge, but years of such kindness had yielded no allies, no confidantes. They all eventually turned on her, their resentment festering like a wound. Now, she fended for herself, her survival instincts honed by years of hardship. These meager scraps, gleaned from the warriors' leftovers, were her only sustenance for the day.
Returning the plates, she headed towards the training grounds. Only a handful of slave girls were permitted there, trained to defend themselves and entertain the pack.
Nearing the arena, she saw the newly caged slaves. Captives, no doubt, from the latest raid, another territory ransacked, its warriors defeated, its women and children stolen. There were more and more of their raids in the last few weeks. She kept her head down, averting her gaze. She had seen it too many times – the predatory stares of the warriors, the women stripped bare and chained to the pilings, the same rules barked at them, the same whips cracking against their flesh as their collars were fastened around their necks, forcing their submission.
Her hand instinctively went to her neck, fingers brushing against the smooth, cold metal of her collar. A pain flared, the smell of burning flesh rising from her fingertips. This, too, set her apart. She hadn't been collared upon arrival. Back then, she was just a child. Her collar came later, on the eve of her first shift, the night she should have received her wolf. Like the others, it had inward-facing spikes, designed to prevent shifting, but hers was… different. Molded directly onto her skin, made of silver, not leather. The memory of that day was seared into her very being.
She remembered being strapped to the piling, the cauldron of molten silver bubbling before her, the metal cast clamped around her neck. Horror filled her as they poured a flask of wolfsbane into the silver, enough to kill an army. Then, they laid her down, four warriors holding her limbs fast as the burning liquid was poured into the mold. The agony was unbearable, searing through her flesh, her heart pounding as her body convulsed. Darkness consumed her.
She woke days later, they told her, her body weakened, poisoned and slow to heal. It took months for the constant burning to subside, for the simplest movements to no longer bring excruciating pain. The silver, cooled and hardened, had fused with her skin, a permanent, disfiguring brand. Though it no longer seared her neck, the metal remained a constant threat. The slightest brush against her skin resulted in burns that took weeks to heal.
Slowly, her strength returned, her body adapting, the wolfsbane becoming a part of her, her very DNA altered. When the Alpha saw it, he punished her, his cruelty relentless. When his whips no longer drew the satisfying cries of pain he relished, he threw her into the fighting pits, another form of entertainment for his twisted amusement.
After several sparring matches, honing her skills with a variety of weaponry, she and the other slaves were informed that a pack would be arriving the following day. There would be welcoming festivities, including, of course, their fighting entertainment. It had been years since the Alpha had allowed outsiders into his territory. Such an event was rare and it piqued her curiosity.
“Would he extend a false welcome, only to unleash his warriors on these unsuspecting visitors, as he had done with others? Or would this pack be different? Would they be able to defend themselves, perhaps even kill the Alpha?” The thought sparked a flicker of desperate hope within her.
The whispered stories of newly captured slaves were windows to a world she barely remembered, a world beyond the pack's brutal confines. They spoke of freedom of movement, of speech—a stark contrast to the constant threat of the Alpha's unwanted attention and the ever-present sting of the whip. Flashes of that other life still flickered in her mind: glimpses of sun-drenched gardens, echoing halls, and a freedom she could scarcely comprehend. They felt more like a fading dream than memories of a life once lived, a life that seemed lost forever.
The next morning, as the Alpha stirred, the women rose silently.
"Halt, girl!" he barked. I knew his words were meant for me. I froze, my heart pounding. I had a name, but it had been replaced by the dehumanizing titles of "girl," "slave girl," or sometimes, "Alpha's girl."
She dropped to her knees, awaiting his command.
"Go to the pit cells," he ordered.
She rose and went directly to the training grounds. A guard opened a cell door, and she entered. Hesitation meant pain. To lose meant death. Survival was her only objective.
As the morning dragged on, her stomach rumbled, a constant reminder of the missed opportunity to scavenge for scraps. The gnawing hunger was a disadvantage, weakening her, but she pushed it aside, focusing on conserving her energy. She curled up on the hard floor of the cell, trying to steal a few more precious moments of sleep.
She woke to the sound of the lock clicking open, the other slaves crowding into the small space, the air thick with anticipation and fear. The muffled roar of the warriors filling the arena seats reached her ears. Then, the Alpha's voice boomed, announcing the day's festivities, the crowd erupting in cheers.
The waiting was agonizing. She always hoped to be called first, to get it over with quickly, to face her fate, whether survival or death, hopefully without prolonged suffering. She listened as each battle unfolded—the sickening crunch of bone, the cries of the defeated, the triumphant roars of the crowd. The metallic stench of blood permeated the air, mingled with the sweat and excitement of the bloodthirsty men.
Then, her turn came.
"Girl, now," the guard grunted, opening the cage. She stepped out into the arena, blinking as her eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight.
"Look, now this is my prized possession," the Alpha's voice boomed, laced with pride. "She, luckily for me, has never been defeated. Even with the wolfsbane coursing through her veins." She squinted towards the Alpha's box, her gaze falling on the two men seated beside him. Her eyes met one’s, and she quickly looked away. He was unlike any rogue she’d seen. Clean, well-groomed, his features strong, undeniably Alpha, yet… softer, somehow. More refined.
The gate opposite her opened, and a massive slave entered the pit. He towered over her, his hands large enough to crush her skull. Her heart sank. She’d fought countless battles, but never against someone so physically imposing. Her only hope lay in her speed. She darted towards the weapon rack, her hand closing around the hilt of a sword just as a powerful force slammed into her, sending her flying. Her head cracked against the blood-soaked sand, ears ringing, vision momentarily blacking out. As she struggled to focus, she saw him charging towards her, a massive mallet raised high. With a desperate roll, she narrowly avoided the crushing blow, scrambling to her feet, the silver of her collar searing her shoulder as she moved. Ignoring the burning pain, she dodged another swing and, as he leaned down to retrieve his weapon, lunged, slicing her sword across both his Achilles tendons. He roared in pain, collapsing.
She couldn't hesitate. Mercy meant her own death. With a swift, decisive thrust, she plunged the sword into his heart, leaving it there as his body slumped to the ground.
The crowd roared. "That's my girl!" the Alpha clapped. The men beside him simply watched her. The other, scarred man looked strangely familiar to her. Just as she was focusing in, the guards dragged her away, not to the cells, but to the Alpha’s room.
"The Alpha demands you stay here," one snarled.
Victory in the pit usually earned her a bath, a small luxury she craved. But it seemed the Alpha had other plans, plans that didn’t involve her. He didn't want her near his visitors, whoever they were. He didn’t want them to see her too closely. The reason remained a mystery, even after all this time, but the underlying tension was palpable.
