Chapter 1
Deep beneath the surface of the churning ocean, the submarine Versaillesius embarked upon its unnerving journey; within its metal belly, brave men dared to challenge the abyss. Captain Gallagher, a distinguished British submariner with various accolades adorning his sternum, stood firm in the command center, his eyes fixed on the pulsating depth display. He was a man who had spent more of his life underwater than above, a seasoned mariner habituated to the audible hum of the ocean against the ship’s hull.
His second-in-command, Exec Tom Arnold, moved about the floor, checking and rechecking the submarine’s systems. Arnold was a tough as nails officer, familiar with every inch of the Versaillesius. Despite the pressures of the underwater depths, he maintained a calm demeanor, his faith was in the ship and its crew.
In the bowels of the submarine, Sergeant Clive Cleveland, a battle-hardened marine with a stare as hard as the steel that surrounded him, was running his men through drills. Moving through the tight quarters, they maneuvered with precision, proving that even in this foreign environment, they were a disciplined force, ready to handle the unexpected.
At the heart of the vessel, Technician Bob monitored the vessel’s complex control systems while beside him; Engineer Ted Ware wrestled with the ship’s nuclear fusion reactor. Ware was an individual whose furrowed brows and deep-set eyes spoke volumes about the sleepless nights he spent battling mathematical conundrums and uncooperative machines.
Apart from them, a unique presence onto itself was ‘Subby’, the ship’s sentient AI. Subby was both observer and participant in the life of the Versaillesius, its unseen eyes monitoring everything from the mechanical heartbeat of the vessel to the individual heartbeats of the crew.
As the submarine plunged deeper into the planet’s hidden underbelly, a palpable sense of unease gripped the crew. It was a feeling of suspense, of treading into the unknown–an adventure promising the kind of discovery that doesn’t just change a life, but the course of mankind.
