The First Date
There’s a loud groan as I reapply my lipstick. I roll my eyes and spin around to find Jeremy crawling toward me on the floor.
“You’re still alive? I figured three stab wounds to the chest would do it…” I tap my finger to my chin, and shrug. “I’m sure you’ll be dead by the time anyone finds you.”
He looks up at me with near dead eyes and a fire flares in my chest. I love that look. The feeling of power it gives me. The adrenaline, knowing I am a god.
“Why? I thought we had something…” He groans while clutching his chest.
“You raped my sister. How could I love something as disgusting as you?” I kick him and he rolls onto his back.
I take my heel and dig it into one of the holes in his chest. He yowls in pain, so I dig it in deeper, and deeper.
“I wasn’t the only one! Why me?!” He screams and I lean down to his face.
“You’re right, Jeremy. You weren’t the only one that raped, tortured, and slaughtered my sister. The others will meet the same fate very, very soon.” I hiss, and take my heel out of his chest.
“You know?” He gasps as blood spills out of his mouth.
“Of course I know! I know who every single one of you are!” I scream. Calm down, Jess. “It didn’t take long to get your names, or to get you all to register on Cupid’s Corner.” I laugh, and turn around to the mirror.
“It was you? You made Cupid’s Corner?” He gasps for air, breathy… wet. His lungs are almost full of blood.
“Of course it was! You really don’t talk to the others anymore, do you? Every single one of you got an invitation to Cupid’s Corner. You five were the only ones invited! You all don’t suspect anything, do you? Their chatbots, Jeremy.” I laugh and look at him through the mirror. Pathetic. “I would never put a poor woman in the line of fire.”
“You’re… you’re insane, Jess.” He mutters.
“You know, Jeremy. If you had just sold the other four out, this wouldn’t be happening. It’s all your fault.” I finish touching up my blush.
I turn around to see a pool of blood surrounding him, finally, he’s dead. Now, I have nothing to worry about.
Headlights flash on the living room wall. His girlfriend must be home. “Oh, poo. Looks like your lovely girlfriend will have to find you dead. I can hear her car pulling up now. Well, it was a lovely first date, Jeremy.” I say sardonically, then I sneak out of the back door before Leslie walks in.
One date down, four more to go. Then my sister can finally rest. Travis, Jeremy’s best friend, should be next. He and I have been talking for a bit. Chronically single, helped organize my sisters attack… he’s not the leader, though. No, the leader is last. My pièce de résistance.
I get home and change in my car before I go inside. Aria thinks I’m coming home late from the law firm. I told her that we had a high risk client and I needed to make sure everything is in order for the court case tomorrow. I lied to her, I lied to my partner. I hate lying to her, but I can’t let her know what’s happening. As much as I’m sure she would understand, she would be disgusted with me.
I rest my head on the steering wheel. Just a little longer, Jess. Four more, and you can put all of this behind you and go back to living life with your wife. Build a family, adopt more dogs.
“I’m doing this for you, Karly. All of this is to avenge you. They took your life, I’ll take theirs.” I whisper and smack my head on the steering wheel.
I lean back and shake my head. Put Cupid away. It’s time to just be Jess.
Cupid can come back out tomorrow.
Tonight is for Aria.
