Summary

Nick felt caught between the urge to stay close to Coraline and the instinct to pull away, because deep down he couldn’t shake the feeling that he didn’t deserve someone as angelic as her. She was pure goodness, a bright light, while he saw himself as nothing more than the leftover fragments of his past and its lingering shadows. He questioned whether his love could ever be enough to outweigh the heaviness of his nightmares or his occasional need to be alone. The depression and PTSD he carried were a constant darkness, and no matter how warm or almost otherworldly Coraline’s energy felt, he couldn’t convince himself that he truly belonged at her side. He sat in his usual booth, working through his usual lunch with his usual drink. The only thing different today was the striking woman behind the counter, who kept sneaking glances at him between taking orders, each look sending a slow, warm unraveling through him. Every time her eyes met his, Nick’s mind became a jumble—he loved her but felt unworthy; he wanted her but knew he shouldn’t. His hands, once tools for carrying out dark jobs for money and commands, now found themselves touching something untouchable—her, in all her unspoiled grace, as if she’d been shaped by God’s own hands.

Introduction

I am redoing each chapter. Adding more content. I'm leaving the story up and just resubmitting each chapter as I get done with it. Hope you enjoy the new content, and hopefully I can deliver a better ending for these two. They definitely deserved better from me. ♥️♥️ J. L. Cooper

To stick with my normal writing, this will be about domestic violence. It's not young love but more contemporary.

Coraline Manson, a twenty-eight-year-old woman, escapes an abusive boyfriend while pregnant with her daughter.

This is a friends-to-lovers story built on rebuilding trust and getting through the worst parts of yourself.

Nich Lachlan, a thirty-year-old ex-Marine who simply wants to be left alone, to live in peace in his cabin in the woods. But after meeting Coraline, he realizes she might be the answer he's been needing and just didn't know.

All types of characters, you know, even as serious as domestic violence is, I must have a few characters to bring comic relief. So, I hope you enjoy this story as much as some of you have enjoyed my others. Please let me know how you feel about this, and any critique I would be extremely grateful for.

Let J. L. Cooper know what you thought about this chapter!

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
